Those of you just joining us, please read this guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

thanks to the anon last thread who gave his opinions on beginner airbrushs. I think I will probably go with the badger listed in the guide, but will ask again if that is the general opinion of it is the 'best' you can get for a low starting price to get started with, with no real decent alternatives?

Second I want to ask if there is anything else I would need if I buy the three items listed in the op, asides from things like the respirators and fume hoods. Like would I need a filter regulator like mentioned last thread if I go with the guide's compressor, or is that something meant for older general use compressors? Just want to make sure I got all my bases covered before I seal any deals.
>>
>>5568043
For your compressor you need a regulator and moisture trap (a lot of compressors for airbrushing come with those nowadays though but you need to check first). Regulator controls your airflow and is used to adjust PSI. Moisture trap prevents wster moisture in the air from getting mixed into your spray. Both are important.
>>
>>5568043
There is a cheaper alternstiva which are chink airbrushes I own one because bagder and the like are expensive as fuck where I live and would have to pay fees to import them. My chink airbrush works really good and I had had it for like a year now, with some rough treatment (I bent the needle by accident but managed to get it fixed with some coins). I recently got another one with a shit ton of accesories for 25 USD. It comes down to your budget and if you rather brand stuff.

Can't remember what I have or haven't posted lately, it's been a while as I've been working on stormtrooper armor, a pg zaku and like 4 other non geeky projects. Arms and core internals are painted for the PG zaku however.

That was kind of the point. Tekkadan captured a couple of damaged graze and made one working unit out of them while using whatever scraps and armor material they had lying around to fill in the gaps in the armor. And they did this within a couple of days. It was a rushed repair job that they originally intended to sell on the black market.

It's not even the nano paint. Its regular white paint. The pink graze manual mentions they used it to stretch out the red nano-laminate paint they found among the brewers stuff to get the pink color.

I really like the Build Gundam Mk. II's booster, but the Gundam itself is bad. Is the build booster that you buy by itself compatible with the Mk. II revives?

Also, should I bother panel lining if I intend to paint later?
>>
>>5568653
the backpack and arm parts fit but the new v-fin and chest parts dont.
>>
>>5568470
Nah, it's cheap white paint that they mixed with red Brewers paint to make something cohesive.
>>
>>5568662
I was talking solely about the booster, not the build gundam mk. II itself. Does the booster fit onto the Revive's back and arms?
>>

>>
>>5568164
Don't think it will include the space/Mars booster for regular Graze conversion. This is unlike the HG Graze Ritter which retained all regular Graze parts.

But at the same price point of 3000 yen, This Graze Kai and Kimaris have tons of play value.

Sad that there is no Graze shield, but they got the bazooka since the Graze Kai used one.

I will army build a few Ground Type Grazes as I love that horizontally mounted broad sword. All medieval duels should be ground based.

I actually anticipated them to release the 1/100 Graze Kai long ago, possbiley straight after Gusion and including the Barbatos mace, but it is a good thing that they waited and managed to include a minor Ground Type Graze variant in 1/100.

A 1/100 exclusive design in a TV series is unusual. Last time we had 1/100 Astraea and Avalanche before the HG.
>>
>>5568164
The Graze shield and the ground use hip flight boosters are still exclusive to the HG option sets.

1/100 Kimaris Trooper better be next. They could easily reuse the frame.

So far all 1/100 have been Gundam and Graze frames, with one rimerde. To release a 1/100 Graze Ein, the 1/144 will have to sell super well and then the 1/100 will be a last minute surprise before S2 airs. Maybe it will even get a cyborg soldier mass produced variant in S2.

Ive never built a MG, but I've done HGs. On this for example I built it into the seperate limb pieces, torso, head etc. However I'm wondering whether painting before any construction would be more prudent on a MG.
>>
>>5569005
>more prudent on a MG.

i have been lurking /m/ and /toy/ gunpla threads for about 2 years now and this is still literally the most incomprehensible kind of thinking i have ever come across

WHY do people think there is literally any difference between HGs and MGs? people are always saying 'practice a couple HGs before you go for an MG' or assuming one is harder than the other or that you need to treat them differently

they follow literally the exact same goddamn procedures and if anything an MG is easier because you are less likely to have to deal with fucking tiny pieces

just use your goddamn brain
>>
>>5569005

Ok that seems fine

My generally philosophy with it is

Prime in sections as large as you can with the huge exception that nothing will get coated unevenly or when you move the kit an unexposed part will show.

Normally that means pretty small pieces

Same thing for paint, but you're much more limited because usually limbs and other bits are several colors.
>>
Anyone want to see my ct, 2nd place winner rx 78 2?
>>
>>5569014

HGs are cheaper so if you fuck up you've only fucked up a $10ish model instead of a 30-50ish one.

>>
>>5569014
In my experience between painting MGs and HGs, MGs require a bit more thought because of how the joints work. That's pretty much it though
>>
>>5569063
Never, the 3.0 is namesake that Bandai used just because they couldn't use their original idea for some reason, I don't remember.

>Uhhhh did Koto discontinue Chain Base permanently?
Uhhhh looks like it?
>Is this the result of FAGs?

>>5569086
It's cause they wanted the RX-78 3.0 to be "Ver. GFT" or something like that, but by the time they got around to releasing the it the hype for the GFT promotions had already peaked IIRC.
>>
>>5569090

surely they created an ultimate crisis at koto, and had to divert all plastic to the doll line

I've been asked to to a paid project for a book on Sci-Fi modeling and the project deadline is January 2017.

The authors "like the idea of taking one of these press together kits and showing how it can be made into a serious replica with painting and weathering." They're clearly leaning towards a grittier style rather than flashy. I'm leaning towards an older MG where there is less surface detail so there is more room for work and the straight build shots will look much more plain by comparison. Starting with something like the RX-78-2 3.0 would be too limiting for example. I also don't want to make any variants or anything because it would be too different from the base design. My current favorite candidates are:

Marasai
Gouf 2.0
Mk. II 2.0
Full Armor Gundam
GM Kai Earth Type
Geara Doga

What would you choose?
>>
>>5569353
Honestly you might want to consider a Dom as well, I think it'd look pretty good.
>>
>>5569353
In all seriousness, have you considered looking outside of gunpla?
>>
>>5569353
Actually, it's newer but I think the MG Gundam ver The Origin has a lot of nice flat surfaces to work with
>>
>>5569353
I can see a lot of that list being vomit to a lot of modellers.
>>
>>5569361

yeah lot of good surface area too.

I kind of liked the gouf option because there is that great lineart of the RG gouf teaser and that would give me tons of surface detail to emulate.

>>5569365

They asked me to do gunpla specifically so not an option here (sadly). If I had my way I would be doing an FSS Volks kit because I would finally have the time and justification.

>>5569367

This is a good call, but coincidentally I ordered one today for a different article, so I can't go with it. Right on with the idea though.

>>5569370

What do you mean?
>>
>>5569372
Sounds like you have a decent level of modeling experiance then. Have you looked into older kits? There are some that are pretty fun to detail up that don't have a modern kit (Like the 1/100 F91 and F90 lines). Are you restricted to just painting and weathering or are you allowed to scribe and mod as well?

Other than that the recent IBO 1/100 kits have a lot of nice details and look great painted up, especially the frames. Add a little pigment dirt and some chipping and I think they can be the look you're going for.

The older MG GM Kai/type and Custom are also nice bases to show how much a little work can improve a kit. They're basically big HG except for the frame in the legs and torso.
>>
>>5569372
Traditional modellers who're into armour dioramas and the like, will probably most appreciate more, 'grounded' designs, if you get what I mean. I guess what I'm trying to say is a mobile suit more like a vehicle, rather than a giant robot. something lived in.
>>
File: image_0.jpg (39KB, 525x481px) Image search: [Google]
image_0.jpg
39KB, 525x481px
>>5569372
Geara Doga/ Marasai would be best IMHO. Those look down right intimidating once properly painted and weathered. Though if you have an Ground styles MS I would opt for those.
>>
>>5569376

I'm sure I can scribe and do detail stuff, I just want to keep structural work and significant design changes to a minimum because I think their idea is someone picks up the book and sees a kit they might have, and thinks "maybe I could try that too"
Like I would love to do something like an MG Zaku Recon or the old kits but I think it gets too far away from what they asked.

>>5569384

Yeah I'm sure that's what they're aiming for; I would like to avoid doing a zaku II, GM ground/sniper, or ground gundam/ez8 only because they are so perfect for it that they are nearly ubiquitous. Gouf is pretty borderline too, but I kind of want to do a desert diorama.

To be honest this is not really my favorite style because I like the car-like design aspects of suits more than the "what if" realism approach. At the same time it's interesting to have to do something I normally wouldn't.

Do they specifically want gunpla like gundam? Or would they be fine with anything that would go onto this gunpla thread and not the scale model thread.

Examples would be things like the hmm zoids, frame arms, or armored core stuff. If that is allowed then maybe you could check out the dark horn for gritty weathered setup, I seen a kick butt diorama once with a weathered molga

god i fuckin love this design. best new mobile suit in recent memory. the lack of nice paint jobs/customs i can find on google is criminal

with slim calves and pointy feet this thing is practically begging for an orbital frame custom. heck, it's already basically a LEV from zone of the enders with that back booster. so fuckin good.
>>
>>5570699

Yeah people use future for car clear parts all the time

Here's the thing, sometimes it will look a little hazy or milky when it's drying. LEAVE IT ALONE. If you get too grabby or worried you should coat it, put it in a kit box and leave it for a day. That shit really levels well too, you can just dunk canopies and windshields and shake them off and everything turns out fine, often better than airbrushing on clear parts.

>>5570805

I like it too but you can't just take it's back off, that's a huge part of the identity

>I like it too but you can't just take it's back off, that's a huge part of the identity

not without replacing it with something, sure. can't just leave those bare vents and big pegs.

but i think the general body shape is already great even without the back.
>>
>>5570819
Thanks for the advice it looks a little drippy now that i brushed it on, but I guess I'll just let it dry for now and see how it comes out. If it doesn't turn out right at least it's water soluble right?

yep you can just windex it off easy

Just grabbed this guy from a Goodwill for pretty cheap, and am interested in restoring it. Is there a way to obtain parts for this model besides Bluefin (probably won't work since it didn't come with the original box) or Gentai Kits, or am I SOL with trying to repair it?
>>
There a good guide for painting see through plastic? My lina GK has a ton of jewels to be painted.
>>
>>5571076
You can always buy another kit to restore it anon. Did you think of that? You can order just runners from kits in Japan too, so consider moving to Japan. But if they don't have any laying around, you may have to wait a couple years.
Honestly anon, you need to think things through before posting your innermost thoughts. You want to make this kit like new, without having to get another kit. That is retarded.
AT BEST, you can use it for a custom. You still need a head and shit, so there you are buying another kit anyway.
For fuck sakes.

I know how you feel anon, I semi-gave up on a kit I was painting because I used gray primer and now the parts I try to paint white refuse to be white.

Maybe I overthinned? Underthinned? IDunno
>>
>>5571790
>because I used grey primer
Found your problem
>>
>>5571796
Is that really the only reason why? I didn't think it'd be a problem because I've painted over gray primer with white paint before with no problem.
Maybe that was because I used Vallejo acrylic the first time and this time I tried using Mr Color enamels?
Lesson learned, I guess. Will I need to strip the paint or can I just paint over the gray primer with white primer like a lazy fucker?
>>
>>5571790
>>5571796

I primed gray on my current kit, it's more of a pain but it's much more clear how even your paint is. I tend to thin white less so there is more pigment per volume and do more light coats than I would with a typical color. Gray also makes a better primer color if you want to do a "dull" white like if you are going for a military look. You can do panel color differentiation just by painting different PRIMER colors instead of having to mix a bunch of colors.
>>
>>5571825

>You can do panel color differentiation just by painting different PRIMER colors instead of having to mix a bunch of colors

For example this is what I would do if I were going to do an MG RX-79-2 3.0 or an RG with those subtly different panels. Airplane guys use this technique most frequently.
>>
>>5571825
>>5571827

So my kit is still good, I just have to thin less?
Thanks for the advice, I've been sitting on this partially painted kit for like four months now just because I've been too frustrated at how the white won't stick. I guess it's also partially due to the fact that this is my first time trying to mix paint and primer so I've probably been fucking that up too.
>>
>>5571834

yeah, it's tempting to just keep spraying to make it look more white but that will just make it look gummy or runny. It just takes more coats than other colors, yellow is this way too, or any lightened color.

When I am done after the first coat and it's really dry I take all the pieces on my desk and arrange them roughly by how white they are, if any are way more white than they other I let them skip round two etc. Just try to end up with everything the same of course.
>>
>>5571848

>>

To be fair, most mech battles don't last that long. You'll blow up 7 guys, miss the eighth, and then take a beam saber to the face from number nine.

The magazine is there for when one of your squaddies pries the gun from your cold, dead hands so he can reload it with ammo he scavenged from a different dead guy, fire three or four shots, and then die himself.

For those familiar with the Real Grade line, could you tell me the differences between the "Advanced MS joint" types?
Is there a side-by-side comparison somewhere online?
The only RG I've built so far is the RX-78, so I'm curious.
>>
>>5572410

i am familiar with the RG line and I don't know what you're talking about
>>
>>5572410
>>5572456

if you mean how are the inner frames different, just look at them on dalong

they try to reuse the same frame to save money so all told there are only like 5 or 6 different frames for all the different RGs. they arent all that different.
>>
>>5572410
"Advanced MS joint" is just a buzzword for the inner frame gimmick, they are all "Advanced MS joint" kits, there are no seperate lines. certain kits like the Zakus and Freedom/justice share the same frames and they have evolved over time but the technology is all the same.

M3 Striker Weapon System for PG Strike, bought on eBay.

It doesn't do the Perfect Strike thing well because there's no battery pack, nor are there connectors for the sword or launcher packs to the PG Aile pack, but it wears each one extremely well on its own. Actually came with some decent waterslides. Fairly good detail and colors. They can even fit onto the Skygrasper if you have one. Defiantly recommend this to any Strike fans who have the PG.

Finally picked a kit for the book article, I'm going with an GM Type C. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and thoughts on it!

I've ordered both versions to be safe (and to get all of the weapons) but I think I will paint it the Earth colors from 0083. I think it will look good with a more typical military weathered look, but still looks futuristic enough to represent gundam. The kit is also somewhat older so there are tons of opportunities to improve and change it. I may get a Powered GM conversion for it but haven't decided yet.
>>
Gonna paint my Barbatos to look like it was manufactured recently, should i go with metallic black or silver for it's inner frame?
So far I painted the red and blue in metallic colors, and the yellow into gold.

No problem with that.

The Zabis did nothing wrong.
>>

Good luck anon, post pics.
>>
>>5573849
Theres also a hg powered gm and then the cardigan. I once thought about bashing a type c and a powered to only realise i wouldve created a powered. Also good luck

>I'm going with an GM Type C

Nice.

Even though I'm a huge fan of Zeon, the GM is one of my favorite grunt designs.
>>
>>5573849

Does anyone have experience with the various 1/100 aftermarket hands that might fit this kit? The Hobby Base square ones look pretty good to me but I'm not sure about sizes.

What phone's auto correct pours defiantly instead of definitely though? Two completely different words. Remind me to never buy that phone.

People just don't know which word to use in what context. Why would you start typing defia instead of defini in the first place.

Goddammit. Plastic cement should still be able to fix this, since it's plastic, right? Or would it only work on styrene?

Anon, at the end of the day it's a goddamn chinese cartoon robot in a box. It's not a case of excusing it, there is no crime that has been committed.

Gunpla is freedom. They want an armless Fenice with the beam cape on the waist? Fine.
>>
>>5574152
I don't think it's armless there, I think whoever built it attached the wings to the arm slots instead.

Finished with the 1/100 Barbatos...now I want the Hi-Res.
>>
>>5574351
>stickers
>>
>>5574351
I personally think the Hi-Res is rather ugly. I don't really care for the particular shades of color they chose and I think the frame is just garish looking and has too many different shades of color and values. The 1/100 is pretty perfect for me appearance-wise.

I do sorta wish they had done those white parts on the gun as actual white plastic pieces though. The stickers look bad, and there were already a shit-ton of white plastic sprues in this kit to piggyback on.
>>
>>5573916
I'm convinced that whoever does these things are actually good builders who purposely do this to piss off other builders
>>
>>5574374
Yeah I think that's what bothers me the most, it wouldn't have been much of an issue to make them white.

I've been kinda obsessed with this "eyeless" look for the Kimaris Trooper ever since I saw this unstickered build. It makes the head into this very weird, almost indecipherable alien shape that I kinda like. I'm still undecided though. For anyone who's already built the kit, how hard would it be to take the head apart again for stickering if I decide I don't like this look later?

I would normally just try it myself, but I don't have mine yet, it's sitting in my Private Warehouse order.

why though? looking at your last build you need to paint literally every day to get good.

>>5574529
I am. I was really pumped to find it for only $9.

>>5574535
They are an old 7 11 exclusive, I found them in a store in nipponbashi in osaka. There's a lot of 7 11 color models that were released, even a set of clear ones bundled together.

I'm not quite sure. I am looking for the exact variances now.

How are the Converge figures? Do they stand well? It looks like they come with little stands. There are quite a few I like, but only have seen them sold at Hot Topic and Barnes & Noble. Do places like Hobby Lobby or Hobby Town USA sell them in the states?

>>5574561
They do come with little clear stands that fit around the backs of their feet/ankles. I don't like the look of the stands personally, so I try to balance mine without em. As for balance, it really depends. You may have noticed that some of them are standing in a slightly hunched pose, and some in a very upright, almost crotch-thrusting pose. This can cause issues. Like, my Z-Gok wants to pitch forward all the time, and my Grimoire can only stand if his arms are perfectly down at his sides, or he'll pitch forward simply from the weight of his arm and gun. Basically what I'm saying is, since you can't adjust their leg poses at all, you sometimes need to compensate with their arm poses if you don't wanna use the stands.

No idea if they're sold at Hobby Lobby or Hobbytown, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them at Barnes & Noble along with the Assault Kingdoms.
>>
>>5573809
Shiet. That ain't bad at all.

>>5573999
What.
>>
>>5574564
The Hi Resolution looks pretty hideous with how they did it. One of the times where too much ends up looking bad.
>>
>>5574561
Why are these so expensive? I would think they would be somewhere around $10 and they're all atleast $40
>>
>>5574579

out of many HGUC I'm surprised they actually made it a standard release, not like i'm complaining about the beam axe.
>>
>>5574582
Definitely looking at the individual ones. Looked on the typical sites and they're expensive as shit

Are these rarely printed or something? Only reason I can think of, anything over $10 (thats still a lot imo but I realize jap import fees and whatever) is too much for these
>>
>>5574579
For the packaged sets they're like $40, but that comes with 4 or more of them.

Otherwise they're like $10 a pop.
>>
>>5574588
Not like you need anything but the unicorn mode anyway
>>
>>5574579
Most places only sell them in sets, individually they're like $10.
>>
>>5574596
>>5574591
>>5574585
I think it's because all the ones I was looking at were as I thought, just out of print so prices are jacked up. The rest of the individual ones I've seen are around the $10 mark
>>
>>5573381
Sounds to be good, that's the recommended ratio by Tamiya for theirs (and Testor's has two different ratios depending on flat or gloss for whatever reason).
For measuring them, I use plastic pipettes and oral syringes.
>>
>>5574590
Uhhh, the "usual sites" meaning HLJ, Amiami, etc? Cause if so, those are full cases. Those stores don't sell individual Converge figures. The only way I could see an individual Converge selling for $40 is if it was like, a really old, really rare one, or some really fancy special edition one, and even then, I dunno, $40 is still ludicrous.
>>
>>5574639
Amazon, ebay, local continental sites basically. Wouldn't bother intl with this, that's just silly and don't have plans on buying any kits so wouldn't be grouping it or using a private warehouse.

Like I said, the ones I was looking at that were so expensive I'm pretty sure are just out of print.

Wasn't interested in it but shit like the Dendrobium and deep striker are between $50-100 and every Sinanju I've seen is atleast $30
>>
>>5570986
An easy way to paint white over anything is to first do a coat of silver or silver leaf then do the white.
>>
>>5574651
Oh, that totally explains it. Amazon, eBay, etc. have no fucking qualms about charging absolutely ludicrous prices. And yeah, you're kinda outta luck with older ones for a fair price. But that's pretty much true with any collectible, they tend to accrue in value as they go out of print.

>>5574658
This is a good tip. I'll try to remember it. Silver leaf does cover anything. It's kind of a waste of silver leaf though...and it's so gorgeous on its own.

Throw the head away

Fill in that right shoulder's panel line and scribe a new one
Maybe throw that gun away
Do something about the folding sword

The hip thrusters look atrocious with that seam as well.
>>
>>5574698
Some of the most iconic ones got re-releases I think....like the GM for example was reissued in a recent wave. But I think there might be running changes? Like recent Zakus don't have the long-ass "noses" that the early ones did, which is a bummer.

Generally though, most do not get reissued I think. Like most candy toys, they are a one-and-done kinda deal.

So my Mechanic Collection Mazinger Z has those rubbery parts found in early 2000's Bandai kits. How would I go about painting/topcoating those? I can probably leave most of it, but the hands need some detailing that I can probably do with markers, unless there's a reason not to.
