It makes no sense for them to discard or destroy the bricks themselves when they can improve their public image by donating them to good causes. I mentioned nothing about costs, but presumably more staff would need to be paid to do it. Binning and recycling aren't really comparable in this respect, since the plastic will need to be pre-sorted in the latter case. Again, arguably more time intensive than just tearing open boxes and pouring them into a container to be sent elsewhere.

As for PR trouble, there's a big difference between a few bricks on the floor near the PaB wall, and the outrage potential of another environmental issue for the press to jump on. Such things have a precedent, and TLG is an overly cautious company.

So, I have really bad OCD, and I'm very picky about my builds. I always make sure the notches at the ends of the pins (circled in green) are oriented as shown in the instructions. I also go so far as to make sure that the little friction bumps on the blue pins (circled in red) are all facing the same way, even though neither of these things has any impact on the model. I even make sure that pieces with numbers on them have the numbers positioned as shown in the instructions.

I have an interesting discovery to share.

I recently ordered some pieces (pic related; I haven't washed them yet so apologies for the grody plate). What's interesting is that the 4L lightsaber blades are trans-bright green, not trans-neon green. Disappointingly, the trans-medium blue head is not fluorescent. A fluorescent trans-medium blue popsicle is next to it for comparison.

We are slowly but surely building up a knowledge of which pieces glow under blacklight.

Seriously, they are all blocks that push together. All that should matter is build quality and whether or not the minifigs look like hell (which, granted, a lot of the chink stuff does have bad looking figs, but the companies that focus on their minifigs are spot on.).
