How would you rate Gut's backstory for a roleplaying character?

It's all about how it's presented when you have a dark/edgy past. Imagine if berserk started out with gahtzu explaining his whole past up to that point.

Pre-eclipse? Meh, kinda edgy, but not awful. If keep an eye on the player, but allow it, unless the game is meant to be light-hearted
If we include the eclipse? 10/10, really great backstory. Comes with ano amazing hook, a strong motivation for the character to go out and adventure, and assuming Griffith/Godhand is the primary antagonist, then it ties amazingly well into the campaign, with a solid personal connection to the threat, and great opportunities for roleplay.

Too miserable. If a player came up to me with it, I'd ask them to tone it down, but I'd allow some of it, as long as I know them to be a good roleplayer.
How else am I supposed to break their character in game proper, if they've already lived through it all?
