Death from the Old Kingdom series was always a neat concept. A sort of transitory limbo that lead from life to death that you could potentially resist and crawl out of back into life.

Reincarnation into lower or upper lifeforms.

Occasional hell or whatever they call it now (in some branches of buddism you can be stuck into our world's bad places for some time, which is actually an interesting idea for dungeons)

>Cubation
When you die you don't actually go anywhere and your consciousness remains intact, but you become a piece of abstract art. Each time you die you become more and more abstract until you end up as a pile of garbage or a utilitarian item covered in a liquid not normally associated with that item.

>Oblivion
When you die you blink out of existence permanently and totally. All traces of your existence are erased and no one remembers that you once were.

>Forbidden Knowledge
When you die your spirit gains the knowledge of the entire universe, the past, the present, and the future. This drives your soul irrevocably and uselessly insane.

>Freaky Dieday
If you are killed by a sentient thing then instead of dying you swap minds with that person or thing and they die instead while you live on in their body. If you die of natural causes your consciousness hangs around forever waiting to switch minds with the first creature unfortunate enough to touch your corpse (even an impossibly fine fragment thereof).

>Feast of the Clan
The afterlife is an endless dinner party with your relatives. You are seated closest to the ones you hated the most and only the rudest/craziest are allowed to speak for the rest of eternity.

>Snoo Snoo
Everyone becomes a man in the afterlife and must have sex with an endless parade of angelic beauties. Without stopping. Forever.

>Splitting
When a person dies they split into two people each a quarter of the age of the deceased, a man and a woman, each with a quarter of the memories and experiences of the person who died.
>>
>>55394987
Hades.
>>
>>55394987
When you die your soul leaps to another body of you in a universe in which you didn't die.

You. I like you.

Theoretically would this be a known fact of the universe, or would there been some sort of shenanigans involved to make sure the general populace was unaware of this?

>>55395562
This is some good shit, anon. Do more.
>>
>>55394987
You just hang around as a ghost near where you died. Possibly forever.
>>
>>55394987
You become an ancestor spirit who get power from sacrifices made to you by your family.
Being a very respected ancestor can make you quite powerful, like the spirit guardian of a family or even a local communauty.
A few even have cults and are petty gods.
Ancestral spirits never really die but lose individuality once they are not remembered and become the faceless collective ancestors of a group.
Many believe that ancestors without individuality is eventually reborn or that they are just echoes of the true soul.

The Egyptian afterlife is pretty fun.
>>
Here, where the world is quiet;
Here, where all trouble seems
Dead winds' and spent waves' riot
In doubtful dreams of dreams;
I watch the green field growing
For reaping folk and sowing,
For harvest-time and mowing,
A sleepy world of streams.

I am tired of tears and laughter,
And men that laugh and weep;
Of what may come hereafter
For men that sow to reap:
I am weary of days and hours,
Blown buds of barren flowers,
Desires and dreams and powers
And everything but sleep.

Here life has death for neighbour,
And far from eye or ear
Wan waves and wet winds labour,
Weak ships and spirits steer;
They drive adrift, and whither
They wot not who make thither;
But no such winds blow hither,
And no such things grow here.

No growth of moor or coppice,
No heather-flower or vine,
But bloomless buds of poppies,
Green grapes of Proserpine,
Pale beds of blowing rushes
Where no leaf blooms or blushes
Save this whereout she crushes
For dead men deadly wine.

Pale, without name or number,
In fruitless fields of corn,
They bow themselves and slumber
All night till light is born;
And like a soul belated,
In hell and heaven unmated,
By cloud and mist abated
Comes out of darkness morn.

Though one were strong as seven,
He too with death shall dwell,
Nor wake with wings in heaven,
Nor weep for pains in hell;
Though one were fair as roses,
His beauty clouds and closes;
And well though love reposes,
In the end it is not well.

Pale, beyond porch and portal,
Crowned with calm leaves, she stands
Who gathers all things mortal
With cold immortal hands;
Her languid lips are sweeter
Than love's who fears to greet her
To men that mix and meet her
From many times and lands
Cont.

She waits for each and other,
She waits for all men born;
Forgets the earth her mother,
The life of fruits and corn;
And spring and seed and swallow
Take wing for her and follow
Where summer song rings hollow
And flowers are put to scorn.

There go the loves that wither,
The old loves with wearier wings;
And all dead years draw thither,
And all disastrous things;
Dead dreams of days forsaken,
Blind buds that snows have shaken,
Wild leaves that winds have taken,
Red strays of ruined springs.

We are not sure of sorrow,
And joy was never sure;
To-day will die to-morrow;
Time stoops to no man's lure;
And love, grown faint and fretful,
With lips but half regretful
Sighs, and with eyes forgetful
Weeps that no loves endure.

From too much love of living,
From hope and fear set free,
We thank with brief thanksgiving
Whatever gods may be
That no life lives for ever;
That dead men rise up never;
That even the weariest river
Winds somewhere safe to sea.

Then star nor sun shall waken,
Nor any change of light:
Nor sound of waters shaken,
Nor any sound or sight:
Nor wintry leaves nor vernal,
Nor days nor things diurnal;
Only the sleep eternal
In an eternal night.

Interestingly enough, Christian Science, for all its faults, actually has a fun new take on the afterlife that could be fun to put into a setting.

Life and sapience are genuinely eternal, and death is just an illusion. When we "die," we "move on" to the next world, but the "next world" isn't ACTUALLY any "higher up" than the previous, and whatever core problems and illusions you have in this illusory world will follow you to the next, and the next, and the next, until you successfully rid yourself of all of the illusions.

Torpor. Death is nothing but sleep, a restful state that the soul remains in while it awaits the world's end. There is nothing worse than 'true death,' something that is accomplished through harming the body to the point where it is no longer able to house its soul. A soul without a body to house it dissipates and the being that once was is lost to nothingness.

Should be the body remain intact and house the sleeping soul until the world's end, the souls are allowed to pass from the dead universe onto the new one, born from its ashes. They become one with the new world, blessed with the opportunity of shaping it however they please.

It's a lot like Buddhism, except you don't go back to the same world twice.

When you die you are whisked away to learn under a great, heavenly teacher. He (or she) will teach you how to become a morally perfect, upstanding person. This process takes several trillion years and may involve forcing you to live additional lives (in this universe or another), some degree of cleansing torture (to understand suffering you caused you must experience it yourself), and a surprising amount of schooling in mathematics (which is the most pure form of information in the universe).

After you're a morally upstanding, perfect person, you go on to teach others.
