What are some interesting directions to take a Not!Egypt setting?

Make Dwarves the dominant species. Have them been cast out of their original Mountain homeland and forced into exodus to the desert.
Pyramids are a form of reverence for their lost land (a mimi artificial mountains) and go hardcore into ancestor worship.

The largest, central pyramid of each culture houses the mummied body of the god whose descendants now rule the people. Each one has their own religious rituals associated with tending to the body, preserving it, and preparing it for a prophesied future resurrection.

Anubis is fine too.

I got distracted, and while its offtopic, I gotta ask here because /v/ is useless.
What are some games which include a wide array of mythologies? I'd ask /v/, but, well, /v/ hasn't been worth visiting in at least 5 years, probably more.
I've only known one which did it well (Dark Age of Camelot), and it included elements from Nordic, Russian, Irish, British, Egyptian and Greek mythology. Tomtenissars, Anubis, Fae, Sylvans, Ammit, Sphinxes, Nereids, Centaurs, Genies/Djinn, Harpies, etc, along with landscapes from every type of climate, Egyptian deserts, Atlantis (sunken cities/temples), Niflheim, Hibernia, etc.I just wanted to reminisce. And find another game which includes elements from a lot of mythologies.

Age of Mythologies. It's a strategy game from the gang that brought us Age of Empires. You can play Greeks, Egyptians, Norse, Atlanteans, and Chinese. Each side has unique armies, myth units, and styles of play, including how to gain the "fervor" resource needed to produce myth units. Greeks just pray, Egyptians build monuments, Norse fuck shit up, Atlanteans make town centers, and Chinese make gardens. The game follows the traditional rock-paper-scissors format of infantry-archers-cavalry, but adds in the addition with myth units, which are strong against standard soldiers but weak to hero units, who are in turn easily overwhelmed by regular humans. There's a bunch of myth units, based on the worship of different gods.

Not!Anything settings are lazy and IMO foolish. Instead, if you want to be lazy and at least look a little original, then do yourself a favor and pick two cultures that share some similarities and then paint them into a new culture that borrows elements of both but is also its own thing. It's not all the way over on the other end trying to do worldbuilding from first principles, but it's also not rank imitation using a culture that you won't know enough about and which will look silly if you're not careful.
So you have Egypt. Animistic and alien/primitive gods, an emphasis on death and the afterlife, a politically powerful, entrenched priesthood, and arid but semitropical conditions with an emphasis on irrigation and large scale public works.
Lets say you pick the Aztecs as your second culture. Then you plop this culture down in a region where the geography/climate are approximate matches.
So now we have the basis for creating an empire that borrows from two similar cultures. At that point we use iconography from both, or merge it, or use similar-but-new images and ideas. Now you have a unique-looking character set (secret and monopolized by the priesthood). An obsession with death and the afterlife, where deceased deified Serpent Kings are interred under massive animal/human hybrid statues above which is the tomb complex-- sanctified by vast orgies of human sacrifice of captives and conquered peoples.

The land is arid, but the Great River floods seasonally. Its floods are catastrophic if not controlled, but also fuel agriculture. A system of reservoirs and dams controls the floods and spares the peasants the damage of them. It also releases water for an extra growing season in some years, or to keep the Great River from going dry in others. All this according to the dictates of the Crocodile Priest, the Jaguar Priest, and the Eagle Priest, who study the omens in the waters, jungle outlands, and sky to give the commands to open or close the sluice gates.
Above them is the divine Serpent King, whose palace floats up and down the Great River according to the seasons and his whim. When the river gates are closed in the dry season and no extra growing season is permitted, that is the time of war when the peasant farmers take their obsidian sickle-swords and march to war.
They take hordes of slaves. Some are ensorcelled by the priests, forced to gaze into the Void of Night, after which they become broken and unable to summon the will to resist. A few whisper that their vital essence is drawn out by the stars but not sent there, and is instead retained for use by Priests or perhaps the King and his retinue. Broken slaves are reliable servants for temple and palace. Other slaves are leased to the common folk by the King when he is not using them himself to work on the flood control system, irrigation channels, or tomb monuments. And when the King dies, huge numbers are sacrificed to serve him in the afterlife-- after which the new King goes to war to replenish the slave pens.

>>55385588
Heh.
A religion obsesssed with death, (not killing and murder, that's the Not!Aztecs)
Giant snakes taking the place of dragons.
Maybe throw in some naval stuff. The Egyptians weren't great in the open seas, in fact they're boats were crap, they needed to buy foriegn lumber, but considering the time period, they were the only game in town besides any minoans and later Greeks.
On that note try diversifying the landscape. Maybe throw in some seas and oceans with accompanying beaches, mountain ranges that are either volcanic or snow-topped, some tropical jungles, or arid highlands at the foot of the river.

Maybe a mod for skyrim? First person is mostly relegated to walkers and fps so what you are looking for is pretty nice. Titan quest and smite are isometric and 3rd person respecticly. God of war I don't think is really immersice. And any indie games in the setting are mostly just for shits and giggles.
If you only hate rts and not citybuilders look at the old siera catalogue, both pharaoh and master of olympus have very good atmosphere.
I can probably come up with more if you want but this isn't v.
