A powerful Sorcerer created a cloned army using a famous mercenary as a base template. now the sorceror and mercenary are long gone and the clones are running about, forming gangs and petty kingdoms.

There might be a wide spread inbreeding problem 2 or 3 generations down the line.
Since the cloning is the result of magic, the inbreeding results in psychotic superhuman abominations rather than pathetic deformed people who can barely survive without serious medical procedures.

Sounds like the Thunder Warriors.

This is a fun idea. Imagine a setting where one, just one legendary hero or merc got super cloned by some bizarre event. And they all share the same name and just wander about their separate lives doing shit. So every town has one or two or more of Jafral the Bladeslinger up to no good.

each one of the ten thousand original clones are immortal to a certain point, old age and disease is no big deal but they can still die to mortal wounds. Maybe less then five hundred of them still stick together for they're original purpose of trying to bring law and order to the "badlands". Some have given into banditry, with many clone bandits disfiguring themselves/ritual scarification to be more unique. More sane and moral clone soldiers are mercenaries or military advisors to local lords.

Had a sorta similar idea, a few years before the Sorc's death, the mage tried to fine-tune his perfect army by making "specializations" giant muscle-bond behemoths that could smash through walls, and silent assassins with a few shadow spells. The problem is that the sorcerer died and couldn't finish the process. Now, without someone or something to help regulate or cure all these magical augments. These specialized soldiers turned into hideous mutants

Could they even breed? Why wouldn't the sorcerer not install some sort of failsafe to stop them from forming their own kingdoms for their heirs?

maybe he just went with mind control, not giving a fuck what happens if he dies and the mind control spell breaks
