I have no place to judge others on my experience level and I try and get art done by someone of reasonable or better skill so I don't have to use a portrait made by someone else for someone else.

for example, I had Pic Related done.
it has all the essential elements of my character and his typical appearance.

if I change or add anything really significant I'll take it back to the drawthread and see about getting additions or changes made to the art.

Early on they aren't actually all that bad. Even in mid game they keep up pretty well.

Its only in the late game where certain classes get cheesy as fuck that they stop being necessary.

Early on, i'd say it'd be a smart idea to have one around. you can switch at any time if you really need to, though you may need to grind a bit for some XP for them.
