We circumvented an entire story ark because we could carry enough supplies to trek across the big impassable desert instead of dealing with the local succession crisis in order to reopen trade routes. We also had more money than he'd wanted us to have, because the sorcerer figured out he could use frozen excess milk and an air elemental to make exotic icecream for nobility while we were traveling through his homeland.

This is what separates player character from NPCs. That hedge wizard knew how to mix his herbs, but he had no vision.
