So I'm a D&D player and I want to get into painting minis, so I backed the Bones 3 Kickstarter. I kind of went nuts and I got all of the expansion sets too, and a couple of the stand alone figures like their sand worm. I just got them a month or so ago, and now that I'm looking into paints, I have absolutely no idea what to buy. I've got about $100 per month that I can dump into this hobby and I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend it. Should I wait another couple weeks and buy one of the sets that reaper offers of paints? Is there a different set that might be worth getting?
>>
>>55277571
That's actually pretty rad.
>>
>>55278528
Get a can of white and black paint+primer

Get some brushes

Testors has good paints, citadel/GW is pricey but good, Vallejo is also a great brand. If you're feeling creative just get your basic rainbow of colors and mix your own shades. Otherwise pick 3-6 colors for a model and go for it.

for your first models ever you're better off starting with smaller generic guys first. once you've got the basics down then move on to the larger stuff.

That campaign must be pretty far in to afford a red dot sight for everyone in the squad. I'm surprised about the choice with shotguns though. It looks like you raided part of a GSC Neophyte box, but didn't take some of the better looking guns.

Does green stuff cure by itself over time/heat, like some clays do? I want to buy a pack to mess about with but I don't want to pull it out after a couple of weeks and discover it's rock-hard / turned into sludge.
>>
The freeze method doesn't actually remove super glue, it just weakens the bond; then I'm stuck with that whole mess of chipping the crap off. Is there any non-toxic substance that will completely strip super glue?
>>
>>55279694
Nope, it won't harden until you mix the two compounds. I leave mine in the plastic wrapper and it's still good, even after months of leaving it laying around.
>>
>>55279694
if you don't seperate it out eventually it will cure in the middle. for best results store the yellow and blue parts in seperate containers.
>>
>>55279694
don't get that one, get the one with the green and blue in separate tubes. it only cures after being mixed together.

Acetone. Super glue (cyanoacrylate) is based on acrylic. Unfortunately, acetone has the unpleasant side effect of also dissolving your plastic miniatures.
>>

I spent 2 hours trying to paint eyes on him and it just looked bad, every single time. Am I supposed to use a pin to dot the whites? Or a brush with 3 bristles? Even when I use just the tip of the brush i I can never get the white to look spherical.

Looks good , I had the same idea of green goo sipping through the fleshy parts.

However the wash of the armor is pretty thicc and the rust on the metal looks more realistic if you then drybrush a bit on top to show wear and places where the rust has dissappeared

>>
>>55281724
Exceptional.
>>
>>55282949
You're obviously a very good painter. One thing I would say to think about is that when you highlight literally everything to near white and shade everything to near black it breaks up forms. This can be good in areas but when an entire miniature is like it it can be difficult to make the miniature out clearly. I think your painting style suffers from this a little and would be improved by having areas of different brightnesses and contrasts. Just something to think about.

Help me out here WIP. Can you paint up an army without any unifying colour scheme without it looking like someone ate a load of paint and vomited on your miniatures? Thinking of getting back in after god only knows how long out, and returning to my beloved Dark Eldar now that they have (mostly) not shit models. Thinking of taking a very anarchist cyberpunky theme, which to be really anarchist would involve not really having a scheme. Is this madness or do you think it could be pulled off?

Perhaps you could paint them in small groups that are different colours, like your army is composed of several different crews from back in commoragh but have come together to catch prisoners.
Not sure about individual different colours though, I think that's ork territory.
>>
>>55285644
Purely by definition you can't have something look cohesive without something tying them together. My suggestions:
>make sure you've got a good basing scheme that unifies them together
>maybe try to keep some consistency at least within a squad, so you might have "the blue squad" and "the red squad" or whatever
>consider having a neutral colour as your main colour and then picking a certain detail you can throw whatever other colours you feel like on
>combine the two above ideas together so for example you might have black as your main colour and then you might have your "red squad" and in the red squad you'd have a guy that's all black, but has red shoulder pads, then another guy just has a red helmet, then another guy has a red right boot/shin/kneepad etc.
That might help avoid the "bought random shit off ebay without repainting" look while still being sort of varied and not completely uniform.

Just a realism point, the rocket's motor wouldn't be firing at that stage of the launch or it would be incinerating the crews faces. You'd have a little puff of black smoke from the launch charge which bumps the rocket out to a safe distance before it's motor starts.

You need to learn 2 things.
1) Thin, Thicken, Mix your paints so you know what color they will turn into. Paint a fucking piece of card so at least you have an idea of what the end product will look like.
2) Fine Motor Control. Paint your miniatures in water and see where you touch areas you didn't mean to. Then buy a finer brush. Pluck your nose hair if you have to. No brush is ever "too" fine.

In all seriousness:
Learn good hand posture. Rest your arms on the table, and your wrists towards each other. Helps you steady your hands.

Use shades and drybrushing to get started, they're easy to get to a tabletop-ready level, but then try your hand at highlighting, even if it looks like crap at first. There are plenty of tutorials for all these.

Don't forget to do proper mouldline cleanup, there's no excuse not to learn decent modeling to start with.

Prime your models. I'd suggest you get a spray can, priming by hand might bore you out if you're new to it.

And finally, thin your paints. No need to go full Duncan, but at least don't go pushing around thick gooey droplets

If only someone had told me all this when I was a wee lad maybe I'd actually be able to do a decent paintjob by now.
>>
>>55287204
Admittedly the lightings not the best in your picture, so I can't quite tell how much you've done with the skin, but if you've got a good basecoat, I'd darken it down with a wash, and then pick out the details on the skin with highlights on all the non-recessed bits.

>The Good
Noice technique on the blade and orbs.
I see the effort on the eyes, crest, and ribs.

Paint is a bit thick, on the collar specifically.
Mould lines.
His armored skirt is over-shaded, ruining the gold. Same on headpiece.
One of his "gut" tubes is not colored. The smooth one in between the ribbed ones.
>Tips
Base the model, if you can. You can buy stuff at a train shop or hobby shop for cheap on the dollar per pound.
Use a glossy varnish, krylon satin crystal clear is what i use on my crons. It is a spray paint. Keeps the silver and gold looking metallic.

Happy painting, Cryptek.

Plasticard comes in a pack and they are sized about the size of a magic card/playing card.
They are not made of the same type of plastic as GW models, so you can heat them up, cut them up, and bend them into form easily.
What I would suggest would be to get your card and cut it into a basic triangle-ish pattern (more like a skinny-top rectangle), set it, greenstuff some more plasticard triangles (cloak flaps), and greenstuff or bend the edges (making it look fabric-e).
There are about 5000 youtube videos showing how to handle plasticard.

Lamenters don't follow the normal (i.e., already weird enough) heraldry conventions of other Blood Angels successors. Some advice going off of your previous work, you should incorporate a nice variety of colors because you past work have had little variation in color and has led to it looking uniform and bland. Also I'd tone down how many of the strong highlights you have, it's a nice contrast but when the model is covered in small intricate highlights it becomes too busy and unfocused.

>>

Sounds like a cool idea, but hows the paint job?
>>
>>55279741
Eye whites are not white. Use light gray, or gray pink. same goes for the black part, it's not black enough to be done with black, use dark gray

t spent years in art school, for no real gain
>>
>>55279741
he looks good w/out painted eyes - as long as eye sockets are shadowed it really isnt necessary at this scale. people can make it look great but it is rare

>>
>>55290813
Very original color scheme, but if you don't add some depth to that white it's just going to look unintentional/unfinished
>>
>>55292610
Doesn't really apply to miniatures: you need enough contrast to be visible from a distance. Same reason as why you highlight and shade even though the shape of the model itself will provide shadows.
>>
>>55292090

Oh sure thing,

Metal is Leadbelcher with a light wash of agrax, wait till dry then a light wash of nuln oil. Highlight is plain Storm Host Silver. Brown on rivets is very watered down Tuskgor fur, thin layer, dry, thin layer dry, repeat

Golds / bronze is all - leadbelcher base, Retributor layer (lead belcher helps Retributor apply like a dream) Multiple Sepia washes (NOT agrax) as Sepia darkens the gold, Agrax just dulls it. Edge with Retributor and if you want a final ultra fine edge of stormhost. (stormhost highlight not required)

After 3 weeks of procrastinating, stripping paint and stabbin myself with hand drills, my 3 lictors are ready for priming. I wish the 3rd edition one was more open like the other two, but it gives a distinctive look. I don't like how the other two have crosses on their leg slots so the body is more leaned back.
Can I get a run down on dos and don'ts of painting metal models?
>>

you want to make sure you get all the mold release agent off from them. Cause if you don't clean them the primer will just flake off later.
So I always take an old toothbrush and give them a light scrub with regular dish detergent. That gets rid off all the talcum, oil or whatever else is on there.

Looking at the model, the parts that immediately stick out for me are the banner, the brass tank in the back, and the warpstone up front. Focusing on those points, I think, while having a more muted color for the main body might work.

I particularly like that ice effect on the stonehorn, by the way. If you wanted to vary up the Doomwheel a bit, you could use that effect on the warpstone bits instead of the usual green. It definitely pops.

Listen to what the other anons said about thinning paints its extremely important. What i would add that i wish i knew.

Take your time, its not a race, applying several thin coats is the way to do it, not one thick coat. This takes time.

Do not rush. There is 2 ways i think are most common to paint. You do all the base coats for all the parts of the model and then begin to shade/layer/highlight each part from there or you pick one part of the model ie; the skin and complete that part from base to finished highlights then go onto the next part, i personally find the first method to be better, because you are going to make lots of mistakes and you risk spoiling the parts you may have completed if you do method 2. Although your model is going to look like total shit right up until your almost finished it which can be disheartening.

Post on wip, dont be embarssed or ashamed because most of us were total shit at one point, this is a learned skill that the more time you practice he better you get but you can save alot of time by getting critique from anons here who can maybe teach you a technique or something you didnt know about.

Watch duncans videos on the games workshop youtube, they are begnner friendly and short.

gluck and learn to have fun with the process.

Hmm the brass tank was an interesting choice i actually glossed over it when thinking about my paintjob. I focused on the warpstone, banner , and blades

Do you think a rusted and drity look would be better or go more eye catching with osl glow blades and crazy warpstone effects

Thanks for digging the ice, it's actually super easy which made it all the more fun to paint
Pic related is my thought for general scheme of the wheel

Both are fantastic.
Sluggas get the extra attack sure, but if the shoota boys are above 20+ models they get an extra attack regardless, and if a mob of shootas gets into cc thats still 3 attacks per ork if above 20 which is more than enough.
I have 23 slugga orks with warpath wipe out a 40-50 man conscript blob in 1 phase. 105 slugga attacks....

Don't think it will necessarily look bad, but doesn't really say 'Marine' I think.
At least not unless you got tabards and robes on your dudesmen. Only the hoods would look odd to me.
>>
>>55279233

Walmart dollartree paints to start out, don't go overboard. Just pick out some primary and a few secondary paints and a decent sealer. Synthetic brushes, 1,2,0, and a couple cheap 1 or 2 size round for drybrushing. Once you see how fun and easy it is to paint you can spend the cash and buy some Reaper paints. I recommend the painting kits, good selection and they will teach you some tricks. When you buy the better paint you will see how it improves the things you paint up. Cheap paints are not bad but sometimes they just suck.
Tips: Prime in white unless it has a lot of metal. Always prime metal stuff black. You can prime black and zethial drybrush white for easy highlighting. Thin you paints but not too much. To start, all you to do is paint a couple base coats for smooth coverage. Highlight with a couple shades brighter and wash with a few shades darker. Done. Research washes and drybrushing and shit if you don't know.
>>
>>55296588
Meant the helmeted ones, I agree that the hoods would look odd unless for a very religious looking Iron Hands successor. Which honestly isn't a half-bad idea...
