It's not normal but it's nothing to be worried about. Some DM just don't like 'em them. Some just forget.

5e was built with magic item progression in mind but it's like it was in previous editions where a +3 sword was required to remain viable at later levels.

If he starts to throw monsters with weapon resistance at you definitely call him out but.

Only if you start encountering a lot of monsters with resistance to non-magical weapons. If that happens you either can't damage them, or fights will drag on for fucking ages.

Otherwise, I commend your GM for his restraint and actually sticking to a low magic campaign.
