What little time isn't spent oiling abs (not necessarily their own), swimming in promethium and other manly and completely straight activities is spent cleaning the Palace and fighting back an infinite amount of Tzeentchian daemons. Thank Magnus for that last one.

Them defending the Palace from within against the neverending tide of daemons is new fluff, and it's funny, 'cause not that long ago, no one actually bothered to ask aloud the question: what the fuck are the Custodes doing, apart from guarding a single most heavily defended object, in the most heavily defended complex, on a most heavily defended planet in the most heavily defended system?

They are, or small groups of them are. Bobby G has a squad of them following him around at all times. He's not hugely fond of it, but he can't tell them no. He also thinks that they're not as good as they once were, they've "lost their edge" from the Heresy era Custodes, but then, he thinks that about everything in the Imperium, he doesn't even like his own Ultramarines any more, and he calls the Primaris a "blasphemous horde" more than once.

Also, I don't remember Custodes defending Guilliman on the battlefield in the new novels, nor them defending any Primarch in the Horus Heresy.
