Has anyone played Mcmourning with his new upgrade to see if Academic or Beast Mcmourning is better?
>>
>>55212041
You don't have to choose, its and/or
>>
>>55212163
huh, must have misread, that creates some interesting combo ideas in terms of things that work with poison.
>>
Does Malifaux have any plot?
All I can find online is really basic stuff
Really want to start collecting/playing
The models look cool and playing with cards seems like a great way to get immersed but I really need to know a good bit about the universe and story before starting a miniature game
>>
>>55212447

Yes, there's an ongoing narrative. It's primarily in the rulebooks, with world-building via Wyrd's bimonthly e-zine and the rulebooks for the Through the Breach roleplaying game.

There's quite a bit to the setting actually.
>>
>>55212502

lol, I still didn't fix the name. I'm the worst.
>>
>>55212502
could you give me a quick rundown of the plot then?
I don't really want to buy a rulebook to then be like "oh, turns out i don't like the plot. guess that's money i'll never see again"
>>
>>55212604

It's basically about humanity's efforts to colonize the alternate dimension of Malifaux, while fighting itself and the natives (the Neverborn and Gremlins). Added wrinkles include the Tyrants, spirits of powerful beings that nearly achieved apotheosis in ancient Malifaux, attempting to rise again while the Neverborn pit humanity against them. And the Grave Spirit, embodiment of the concept of Death, teaching Necromancy to humans through eldritch whispers as it attempts to do more than slowly seep into Malifaux through cracks in reality.

There's many personal narratives running through all of this, ranging from the playable characters to average citizens just trying to survive another day.
>>
Hamelin just won at NOVA apparently.
>>
>OP is stupid enough to fuck up writing in a subject
Sasuga. And people wonder why some threads don't hit bump limit.
>>
>>55212604
You can always shamelessly pirate the PDFs (Links in the OP) and see if you like it. There is also The Breachside Broadcast which is the audiobook version of a lot of the stories in the rulebooks.
>>
>>55212824
Whatever. As long as it's still searchable, why does it matter?
>>
I think McMourning is my favorite character, personally. His stories are pretty entertaining, veering between Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein. It kind of catches you by surprise when he does something legitimately evil.
>>
So boxes often come with three dudes but players typically don't feel three of them at the same time.
Why do I see players build all three? Why not just sell the extra? Options?
>>
>>55215376
For the possibility that you will run three, and of course pose variety. For summoners the three poses aren't even enough to avoid identical twins. And they do sell some guys in two or even one packs. For instance they cut down the Draugr and now apparently the Kentaroi to two a box rather than three, as that is realistically the most you will use in a game.
>>
>>55215412
>as that is realistically the most you will use in a game.
Tell that to my five Kentaroi Nico list.
>>
>>55213140
Him and Somer for me. Lucius and Nico get a lot of points in my book for pimpness.
>>
Perhaps continuing the McMourning talk from last thread, what kind of combos do you like for him in Ressers? There's obvious synergistic pieces, like his thematic models and Rafkin, but anything in particular you like to do? Unusual hires?
>>
>>55215657

I do like that Lucius took a massive kick to the balls in the lore lately. Interested to see how he bounces back; it's nice to have the characters that seem to have their fingers in every pie and always be one step ahead get put on the backfoot every now and then.

Shame with Zoraida, after Broken Promises.
>>

Lore question, exactly what is Hoffman's relationship with the Arcanists? He's not tied closely enough to be dual-faction but then there's Arcanist Assets. In the stories I've seen so far he seems vaguely antagonistic towards them.
>>
>>55216786
Iirc, his brother ryle had the arcanist connections.

I expected the box that came first to be the one I was aiming for.

>>55217167
>>55217179
And yet not really an inappropriate typo, given that that is where most of the fun happened.
I'd always got the impression that it was less 'Arcanist Assets' and more 'Arcanists have the most robot constructs, rather than just construct constructs'.
>>
>>55216786
Ryle had the Arcanist ties, I think the reason they came to malifaux in the first place was because Ryle hoped there could be someone to help Charles, but thanks to Anna Lovelace Ryle nearly died on the crossing. Ramos saved his life with a crapton of augments that pretty much kept his body going while hopefully his mind heals, but as of Ripples of fate it doesn't look like he's going to get better.
The arcanist robots he can hire are all M&SU, it's more as the head of the amalgamation devision he has the authority to requisition any mining robots, and Ramos would want Hoffs talents on his side, so would probably make the union grant any requests Hoffman put in, so there would probably be very little resistance when Hoffman wants to use them.

I've actually just bought him, but I've played a few games against him and he looks like he works very well with just his box crew.
The Hunters in particular are solid (though at 7ss they should be).
Add an extra Watcher or a Guild Hound (or Guard, I guess) and a Peacekeeper and you should be golden.

I get the impression that Hoffman is one of those that is a bit too fiddly and it's not necessarily obvious the way that his crew is broken, so he's not been 'cracked' yet, sort of like Guild McMourning.

Havign said that, the "no ignoring armour" thing on the new upgrade is probably going to bring him back.
>>
>>55223956
I think Hoffman is in a weird place, with a sturdy, but not particular fast or punchy or schemey crew. Lots of armor and heals but not nearly as impressive offensively.

Not sure how GG18 will shake out, but he was a pain in Extraction - once his crew get to the middle, they do not leave, and the damage output is respectable even if not amazing.

They're ok but there are better and cheaper options for whatever you'd want to use them for
>>
>>55225031
Such as? I'm open to suggestions but probably wanna pick up a pack anyway just because of the look
>>
>>55225012
With TT at least they aren't very useful, with their damage output being pitiful and their lures needing to be suited. The lures are better of being used on your own guys, if ever. That said if you can have someone like Yamaziko carry Smoke & Shadows, they can be much more useful as they are the cheapest models that can make use of said upgrade. It helps you block off areas of the board, but their applicability is very much not an every game thing.

Folks seem to ignore the fact that they are Disguised with an 8" charge.
That's pretty good for locking something down for a turn or two from a surprisingly long range.

If you need to control where the engagment happens, charge their frontline early to pin it in place, and if you survive until next turn Lure your own beaters upfield to keep it there.

Even better, if you have a high Mask(?) you can hit their trigger that stops the target from attacking her back, adding to the survivability.
>>
Think Ramos will actually run either of his new upgrades?
>>
>>55225040
As support models? Low River Monks with The Peaceful Waters. You aren't going to focus on hitting dudes with them due to them not having a damaging attack. Rather you can remove conditions, tank up easily, heal from a good distance away, and even get a free scheme marker to go with that heal. They are only 4 stones too. TT Bros are also a good pick, as while they won't be hitting dudes too often, they have a ton of versitality and can tie up models and tank easily. Being able to stop your markers from being removed helps as well.

Apparently the Leviathan Generator is pretty handy for expanding his battlefield role past being a spider expert.
Means his lighting becomes more useful at about the time in the game you want to start using it.
And the bonus to Ca means he can save the face cards for duels and still summon 3 Arachnids.

As the number one Ramos fanboy I'm glad something is finally not going just as planned for Ramos. He's been a little too perfect in all dealings. It also gives Toni some much needed character and her own story, of which she was lacking.

Though at the same time, her buying freedom for everyone thanks to the good graces of the helpful white man is distasteful in its own way.

Meh. Ramos had his fingers in a lot of pies, but it didn't seem to be getting him anywhere. The guild was very much aware that the MSU was an arcanist front, and he's been trying and failing to get his giant spider up and running again for half a decade now with no success.

They are as powerful as they are because nobody knew about them. In book 2 I think hamelin works out they exist but nobody else really knew save probably lucius. Over time they have gotten more and more attention, lucius definitely knew by book 3 but the majority of the guild still didnt but after misaki fought against nicos horde it almost outed them.
>>
>>55234136
>untouchable
I think he was more secretive than untouchable. I don't think he was walking around out in the open without fear of reprisal.

That aside I don't think he was really getting anywhere. No populist uprisings, insurrections or any real shows of strength other than occasionally being a thorn in the guild's side.
>>
My backlog is too big to paint and I cant get better swapping between too many masters. I am going to shelve all my models somewhere and play gremlins till I git gud, focusing on only one master and building/painting everything before I use it. I dont want to play somer, brew, zoraida or zipp to start. So should I go mah, ulix, wong or ophelia? Ulix get no real use around the gremlins I know so they seem the best choice to me, simple to paint pigs and bringing sething new to my local.
>>
>>55234175
>They are as powerful as they are because nobody knew about them.
Which is dumb. They're a criminal organization. You can't sell protection, extortion or do any of the major things you need to as an organized crime syndicate without trading on your reputation. You can't have a sinister reputation and also be a complete unknown.

Maybe the fluff is just bad for trying to point them as both Yakuza/tong/triad and super secret ninja clan.
>>
>>55234201
He wasnt powerful in malifaux or innocence but the msu and by extension him literally ran most towns.
>>
>>55234230
Ulix is good, and fun. Ophelia is a bit behind the curve, and the new upgrades didn't help a lot, but a pay straight forward beater.

Mah is so bad it's absurd. Pretty much every henchmen in the game would be significantly better than her if they had an the extra ap.

Its about compartmentalization. Everyone knew about the scary brilliance dealers, the asian gangs, the asian ressurs, mccabe's notoriety etc its just nobody put them together. Hamelin for example found out about the thunders because he saw a torakage working for lynch, he knew of both forces seperately. The yakuza and the ninjas etc are all seperate branches seemingly unconnected but with the ten thunders in the shadows.

Mah's new upgrade has fixed her, she's no longer card intensive and doesn't have the obnoxious 1" ML anymore. She can push 14" per turn between one of her (0) actions and get off my land. She is flat out the most mobile beater master in the game now.

Please bear with the idiot here. Is the Through the Breach 2E Core Rulebook available for download? I can't find it anywhere.
>>
>>55234664
I played solo Ulix for my last tournament.

2 boxes of Piglets, 2 War Pigs (I usually start with 3 Piglets on board but you could do less). Slop Haulers, The Sow, optionally Gracie and Burt Jensen.

Haven't tried taxidermy yet even though I have the models, might be good too.
>>
>>55236211
Came in second too (albeit we only had like 8-10 players and we made a crucial play error in the last game, I'd have probably lost if not for that)

Ulix is amazing in scheme marker heavy pools. The reason for this is corn Husks, an incredible upgrade (which goes on Old Major, mind you) that gives Piglets (0) action interacts and allows Pigs of all shapes and sizes to remove nearby scheme markers at the end of their activation to heal themselves up.

Ulix plays a volatile game, what with Pig triggers giving you tons of options (I pushed the enemy Kaeris out of my deployment zone in the last turn of the second game with Penelope and a Piglet, which won me the game). He's certainly good and fun, but has some counters which is why I'd recommend using and learning another master in conjunction with him. Anything that prevents charges makes for a very sad Pig army.

Not unplayable, just i assumed there were now alternatives to them and wanted to explore those.
>>
>>55236689
The real question is piglets, stuffed piglets or flying piglets. Personally I'm beginning to think flying piglets have a place, especially if you use a taxidermist's "never happen" ability to give them flight.
>>
>>55236689
Just wait until you find out you can play a gang of zombie hookers...
>>
>>55236547
>>55236689
4-5 are quite likely, though it really depends on your play style. The 2nd War Pig is less crucial, although still nice to have. I'd say try it out for a while, and see how many you end up with. Especially if you use the Sow (which is very good, but Gracie presumably performs a similar job, I haven't had her until now) having 2 extra piglets on hand that spawn when she dies is good. 4 seems like the bare operable minimum, but you should be fine.

The real shame is that the Boars that come with his box are rather subpar (at least with Ulix, they're ostensibly good with Zoraida).
>>55236780
This guy raises a good point, although I feel Piglets and Exploding Piglets perform entirely different roles. I have no experience with Flying Piglets, they may well change his playstyle a bit (though having looked at the card, I dunno about that).
>>
>>55234000
Yeah, but that kind of stuff always comes at the good graces of the helpful (insert non-opposed class here). It's not like emancipation or voting rights would have been secured in the real world without the good graces of some white men.
>>
>>55236860
Just as often its through violent uprising.
>>
>>55236547
Oh, and another thing.

Despite appearances Hog Whisperers aren't really that amazing with Ulix, you already have 2 models with a large calming aura and Old Major prevents them from charging each other anyways.

They're a better fit if you're importing Pigs into a non-public master crew (and even then they're iffy, Ulix truly does it best). If you haven't bought them yet I'd say you're better served just getting another box of Piglets

How are swine cursed with Ulix? Haven't played in long time and the other gremlin player is strictly Somer
>>

Doesn't somer have both pig and gremlin synergies? Though his pig synergy is less than ulix i would expect somer would use swine cursed.

Swine Cursed, though this is only from what I've heard, are great with Wong, and passable with Ulix. You can certainly include one, but that's probably your flex spot.

Somer can do pig lists, but in a purist sense Ulix just does it better. He has other strengths, but Somer is not the pig master. (Again, mostly hearsay and theory craft, I'm an Arcanist/TT player who got a great deal on a Ulix crew).

Somer is a good pig master. A lot of Somer slots resolved around being able to change from gremlin spam to pig spam if the need arose.

It's less common now, since Ulix was added and has significantly more pig synergy.

Does he? Pigs fucking love triggers and his do it like dis is fucking amazing, Tossed Feed is amazing action economy with even just 2 pigs, let alone 3-4. then remember that whilst lenny can give rams its only in a 3 inch aura where do it like dis is 8 inches so your pigs can declare rampage over and over, since they don't have to worry about "once per activation" when its not their activation. Wild Boars would be the best choice for this due to + flips outside activation, relatively cheap cost and being able to "eat your fill" with no fear.
>>
>>55238939
The issue is multifold, for instance, Piglets aren't great at punching through DF with their meagre MI of 4, and War Pigs are usually too costly to be bought, rather than summoned.

This changes through + flips on charges, which Old Major can hand out. I'm not arguing Somer can't do pigs, but Ulix is generally better suited to a Pig heavy list, whereas Somer may prefer a smattering along with some other models.

>>55211560

If they can heal back up they should be solid against big beaters.

Driving charge and the push should help mobility. If they can actually get a charge and discard a corpse/scrap/scheme +tag team they should punch way above their weight.

I think we'll have to see how often things work out for them.
>>
>>55249607
To me the obvious synergy seems to be to have the mechanical walk up once or twice laying down a nice scrap marker for em then have em charge from near him taking 1 damage for the + flip and getting + to damage.
>>
>>55249725
Sounds like a pretty solid plan. If you can get it to work right, they're a 5ss model hitting for effectively min damage 4 with a ml of 7.

A pair should also be really good at locking down beaters, since they will have ml 7 disengaging strikes, and if they've y min damage is 3+ they can't hit them more than once a turn.

That wording just means that even if your opponent places a marker in multiple Protection Money auras, you still only draw one card.
>>
>>55252946
The protection money ability doesn't specify friendly models. This means that if you and your opponent bring one of these models and you place a scheme marker in the enemy's aura, you both draw a card.

For the lazy, here is the exact wording: Protection Money: If an enemy Scheme Marker is placed within (aura)6 of one or more models with this Ability, draw a card.
>>
>>55253180
That doesn't work. It has to be an enemy scheme marker, you don't draw a card if the scheme marker was friendly to you.
>>
>>55253180
>>55253233
I guess in a mirror match-up if your opponent dropped a scheme marker near their own model with this ability you could still draw a card if you also had one. But even then only one card is ever drawn.
>>
>>55253280
No, a friendly scheme marker is being placed in within the aura of one or more models with Protection Money from your point of view, so no card drawn.

>>55253180
Somewhat unrelated, if I ever see one of those fuckers across the table from me as Titania, that thing is dying as quickly as possible. Especially if it's a Crime Boss.
>>
>>55254644
It says "placed within (A)6 of one or more models with this Ability", meaning it'd trigger on all models with Protection Money, including your own. So if an opponent drops their scheme marker near their own PM model, your own PM models would treat that as an enemy scheme marker while your opponent would not.
>>
>>55254770
Yeah, but both crews don't get a card draw out of it, because an enemy scheme marker is only being dropped for 1 crew.

Borrowed Time is restricted to only being usable once if you don't want Asami to flicker out turn 5 or go Melee heavy, but Fate of Mortals would let Asami get the +1 flicker as opponents score VP to sustain her. How?
Most crews are 6-10 models excluding summons and games regularly go to time at t4. If I am playing against and teaching a novice opponent, even if they continuously refer to the stat cards, with no more than 10 activations between us I don't see how this 'miniature' game could possible deviate so far from a normal scrap at to remotely represent the greentext above.

I fully agree with demo guy a five model crew is fine, but can be built to allow sufficient complexity that the new guy gets the point without being overwhelmed with options.

Perdita, Francisco, Santiago and a Pistolero might work on a sufficiently terrain-heavy board.

I've been toying with Joss, Howard and two Metal Gamin as a HH squad, might work for a femo too.
That way they are both pretty killy but have tricks, letting brand new players do what they will always do, which is moshpit, while learning the system.

So, I've gotten the Alt Huggy and painted it and after all is said and done... Am I crazy that I think I like the old Huggy better?
>>
>>55262938
I don't like the new huggy at all
>>
>>55262938
New Huggy is an amazing model that is super cool. It does not give off the idea it is a drug spirit at all.
Old huggy is a looming spirit, its not perfect but the idea it is a representation of a concept and that it is without set physical form is more clear.
>>
>>55262938
No, the new one is too big.I think I would've liked Huggy more in either form if it was just a giant mouth
>>
>>55263296
I would have liked it to be something like smoke forming into a monster rising from a cracked bottle/barrel/container of some sort, the idea it was actually coming out of the brilliance or it was the brilliance escaping the container.

My problem with Hamelin has always been that his style revolves around denying you space and AP to do things, rather than the time factor.

It's irritating having all your movement lanes blocked by rats, and all your AP consumed by killing rats, and then getting Obey'd around and killed by Blight.

I prefer Pandora.

Hamelin has a bunch of rats that serve no other purpose than to get underfoot, which I guess is more insulting or something?

The annoying interactions there just seem very low-stakes, whereas Pandy paralyse is a contest of wills (and cards, and Master AP).

To be fair I've not actually faced the Brewmaster bubble crew either, because the one guy I know that plays Brewiemoved on to Yan Lo and Asami.

So how do you take in brilliance? Do you smoke it? Do you snort it? do you inject it?

You can get it even by having it in contact with your skin, hence Tannen handing out poker chips coated with brilliance. So all of those would do, but it is generally more subtle than being a straight up drug that you can hold in your hand.

>alt head with goggles and no hat,
Never seen one, if that is the case.

>>55272259
I don't - she looks too much like a prostitute, rather than a theatre owner, show runner, lady-about-town.

I've got myself the Alt. Sybelle coming though, so I might paint her up to match my other Colettes (metal and plastic) so I can have three versions.

The current plan was to use Sybelle as Angelica (fucking hate the boa), but that might change when I see the model.

I definitely liked the can-can dress over the current one.

I got the impression that the theater is more than a little bawdy, especially considering that they hired a male stripper and they've always had push type abilities reminiscent of the Belle's lure.

The new Collete comes off as a bit manish, instead of cute/alluring.

>>
>>55277904
Not even sure why Yasunori gets such a rep specifically with McCabe. With Yu and any master you can launch him 10" up the board and give him fast. That's only 4" less than if you push him twice with McCabe and give him nimble.
>>
>>55277904
Witchling Thralls are very nice targets for reactivation, and you have a lot of really good Guild minions in general to choose from. Missing out on Terracotta Warriors is kind of sad though, as you can't dupe upgrades or score for Show of Force with McCabe's upgrades as a result. On the other hand some toys like Debt to the Guild are nice, as the upgrade doesn't get discarded letting models who take it benefit from Promises for the whole game.

>>
>>55279549
It is the "Nightmare" version for a reason. Hamelin's regular box set is much simpler to assemble by comparison, especially if you don't use the optional cloud that goes on Hamelin's base. The new one is worth it IMO as you actually have more than four sculpts for the cats/rats.
>>
>>55279636
>It is the "Nightmare" version for a reason
can confirm this is true, I got the wild ones box last year, i've never been more frustrated trying to build a set before.
>>
>>55279562
It wasn't killjoy + levi it was ratjoy. The strat where you use a rat catcher to reactivate a rat and some other shit so the rat ends up in enemy deployment first turn and then dies popping killjoy in deployment. Waifs + rat shenanigans meant opponent would have to have activated all models. It was 100% two models dead, probably more and Levi thrives against a crew that is weakened. Viks and Hamelin used it a lot too (all outcasts did) but levis status as a "finisher" of models put him in the best situation to abuse it.

They do, they are just shitty because there's not enough limb-thickness to put a meaningful slot in without having the join so big you either accept the giant seams across the limb or effectively resculpt that bit yourself.
