I want to play a suave, charismatic character.
Who should I watch/read in order to pick up suave characteristics?

The Game by Neil Strauss

Not even joking. If every robot bothered to read this book at least once, /r9k/ would no longer exist as a board.
Barry Lyndon, I'd imagine

just b urself lol

You don't have to pick up rocks for strength checks, so don't bother roleplaying like an Oscar winner for Persuasion checks. Only wannabe improv actors play DnD as anything more than a wargame with benefits.

I want to believe.

Wrong

I dunno about suave, but this guy is pretty charismatic.

Go back to third edition where ALL of your roleplaying is dumbed down to 1d20+number. You can live out your autistic power fantasy there, or on league of legends against bots.

I doubt that. Most of /r9k/ is incredibly ugly - both on the outside, and on the inside.

When you roleplay, make sure to leave the GM and other players room to not take your character seriously. You don't need to actually be suave, you just need to make it clear that your character is suave and give them the ability to roleplay along in an undemanding way.
For instance, you could try to flirt with an NPC or party member convincingly. This will probably be extremely awkward. Alternatively, you could say, in character, "hey, how YOU doin'" with a big cheesy grin. This will have the other person think "oh right, they're doing a Joey from Friends impression and their character is being flirty, I will have my character/NPC react according to this" rather than making a judgement about how flirty you the player are being.
