>As Maro explains it in various places, humans take center stage because most magic players are humans.
When I was but a small child, my favourite Star Wars character was IG-88.
Am I an anomaly (an abomination?)
>>55153318
Well yeah you are an abomination, but I think the whole "people can't relate to nonhumans" thing is a bit shit. Maybe autists can't, but I can and I think most others can too.
Also, kids often connect with adult characters.
>>55153331
It isn't can/can't, it's how many relate how well.
>>55153352
Do most struggle if they don't find a character to act as a sort of mirror?

>When I was but a small child, my favourite Star Wars character was IG-88.
Well, at least it's not Darth Maul, Mace Windu or some other shit from the prequels.

Someone who relates better to a robot than humans is just as bad as someone who can't relate to humans.

I know that american tv culture does. And thats america, not just the USA's.
Apparently a lot of eutopean shows got canned in US telivision because it lacked a proper self insert character.
>>55153359
Pretty much. Which is why the main characters in movies and television are often almost completely featureless; it lets the audience self-insert into the story.

Does Magic the Gathering still have "blank slate" characters? Did it ever?

>mention television and movies
>"Yeah but that doesn't apply to Children's Card Game."
Besides that being only very vaguely related to my point, I've never delved into magic lore beyond some of the basic stuff that happened between Myrrodin and Phyrexia because I have some cards from that set. MtG isn't a story made for the mass market anyway. It's made for people who are fans of a niche game (and Magic is a niche game, if popular in its niche) with a niche setting. It won't necessarily follow all the basics of mass market appeal like Twilight or some shit would.
