I'm looking to run a maritime campaign where the party is a crew of pirates. Has anyone run a sea-based campaign? What system did you go with?

I was planning on running a maritime campaign, but not in the traditional sense. In the world I had built the back half of the planet/world was an open ocean of lava, and the only to sail it was in giant fortresses made of ice and permafrost, kept cooled by magic (Be it wizards, clerics, items, or a dragon if you could get its help.) The party never made it that far before the group disbanded sadly.
I ran a 5e game that took place on a chain of islands. I think it worked well since there were plenty of references to different boats, how to pay your crew, different encounters while on the high sea, weapons that you can outfit your ship with, etc.
Didn't get too far with it though, group broke up due to scheduling conflicts.
