More importantly, is this common? People joining games where they have not even the slightest idea of the source material expecting to absorb all of it in the process instead of doing homework when asked?

in almost every game that requires "homework," people will either not do it, do it half-assed and not remember fuck all, or that 1% of people will actually do it

i didn't ask them to drill themselves on it until they had as much of an understanding as i do, they all answered "yes" when i asked if they've read up to the most recent parts and remember most of it at least generally.
i mostly play exalted, man. i know what it's like to know fuck-all about a setting and just gun it, but this felt like I was over-catering to pretty much only myself. part of the big Mood of JoJo's writing is that bullshit one-upping that always happens.
you know what bullshit one-upping needs? a second person to bounce off of. None of them were willing to try that because they didn't see the appeal.
