Why has some kind of War of the Beard equivalent not broken out between Dwarves and Humans? If all it takes is highwaymen and bad diplomacy to start a forever war with the Dwarves then every human nation in Warhammer should be at war with them.
>>
Because humans are social enough to realize you're better off giving a dwarf what he thinks he's owed or at least working to an agreement where elves have the potential to be dicks with flair.

This. Remember that Dwarves sent an abassador Ulthuan to set things right, but Caldor the First sent the envoys home with their beards shaved. Humans would never do it.

Also, Melekith being a dick is a factor here,

Humans aren't full retard when it comes to diplomacy, they wouldn't shave the ambassadors of a race of notorious pogonophiles just because they were rude when they complained about bandit attacks.

Also, humans aren't pretending to be a united people with zero internal dissent like the High Elves were, if a Dwarf rocked up claiming his caravan had been sacked by humans, they're freely admit that X Elector Count was having a barney with Y Elector Count and it's possible the caravan got caught in the crossfire.

Rather than desperately trying to claiming their people are all 100% united and loyal, certainly no internal strife going on here, no sir, not even banditry.

tl;dr elves are arrogant retards

It was Caledor II, Caledor the First was a cool guy.

>Humans aren't full retard
this hurts my suspension of disbelief

>when it comes to diplomacy
still

What are you basing this on? Because you sure as hell aren't basing it on human history In RL or Warhammer. If all it takes is human criminals targeting Dwarves and a Human leader acting like a retard then the War of the Beard should've kicked off a hundred times over in Warhammer history, the only reason it didn't is author fiat.

Humans are pretty deferential to Dwarfs in a lot of the fluff. They have a big brother/little brother relationship which seems to mean the Dwarfs give Humans a bit more leeway when it comes to what constitutes a grudging and likewise most nobles seem to trip over themselves to suck up to Dwarfs because they want top-tier engineers and/or blackpowder for their armies.
>>
>>54991415
Humans are not a hivemind.
>>
>>54991447
And the Dwarfs are well aware of that in the fluff. The Elves were desperate to maintain the illusion that they were a 'hivemind' and had no internal division, to the point where their king essentially took the blame for a Dark Elf raid rather than admit to a rival power that Dark Elves are a thing.

Humans would just haggle a deal out with the Dwarfs and then try to sell them bandit insurance for the trip back home.

The dwarves were also partially responsible here. Their ambassador threatened the Phoenix King in his court when the elves told him they hadn't done anything.

The War of the Beard is supposed to highlight the problems both races have.

>he Elves were desperate to maintain the illusion that they were a 'hivemind' and had no internal division, to the point where their king essentially took the blame for a Dark Elf raid rather than admit to a rival power that Dark Elves are a thing.

This is wrong though.

Caledor II told the ambassador that other elves were likely at fault. The dwarves didn't believe him because to them the idea of a race being divided in such a way was preposterous. They didn't believe that dark elves were a thing.

Why are you so stupid? Dwarves will declare eternal Grudges over stupid shit, that's pretty much the foundation of their lore, there are enough evil humans that Dwarves should've found a reason to declare a Grudge on humanity a million times over. The only reason they didn't is because humans are the MCs and the writers wanted Dwarves to be their allies, the only way that humans and dwarves could be allies in the long term is if both races behave unrealistically, that's why it's bad writing and trying to defend it just makes you look a fanboy.

>The dwarves didn't believe him because to them the idea of a race being divided in such a way was preposterous.

Well they seem to have grasped the concept in the intervening millennia. Either way, the Elves made a much bigger show of all being united under the Phoenix King, whereas you'd have to be blind or stupid to miss the basically internecine feuding that constantly goes on between the various human groups.

I guess the Dwarfs bought the Elves' whole 'superior' shtick, they saw them as rivals, ascribed them similar capabilities to Dwarfs and so had higher expectations, but since they look down on the humans, they're more willing to believe they're a bunch of fuck-ups who can't even cooperate as a species properly.

>>54991634
Grudges don't automatically equal full-on War of Vengeance against a whole species, particularly since they know humans are so divided.

Because it takes a special kind of grudge to start a war that big. Shaving the High Kings ambassador was only slightly less insulting than shaving the High King himself. It wasn't about the caravan raid, it was what they did to the ambassador. Secondly, the dwarfs already think of humans as fractious untrustworthy apes, so they don't expect good behavior to begin with.

Stop drinking the meme-aid.

>>5499174
What's the history behind the book of grudges? Because it doesn't make much sense to keep a book of times where someone has committed an atrocity against your whole race if you can immediately retaliate. Kind of seems like the type of thing you'd write in when you don't have the option to get back at whoever pissed you off. Given that only the high king can write in it, kind of seems like he'd tell someone to fuck off if they were bitching about bandits, not start a race war.

That's the Great Book of Grudges. Each Hold has its own book as well.
