Maybe this can be a regular thing? I'm just another Anon copping the OP from the last thread. All things cyberpunk welcome; talk about the already published RPGs in the genre, get hype about what's coming up, and post that homebrew setting you're writing up. Suggest some movies, literature, interpretive dance, whatever.

Postwar edition; It looks like Octopus unit didn't escape the last thread. How has war or other apocalyptic events shaped your setting in the past? Are there lots of augmented veterans, what about refugee crises? Is the war still going on somewhere, or is it definitely over?

What do you guys put as background music during your cyberpunk sessions?

I used to put a lot of industrial/noise music.

My cyberpunk campaigns always had a lot of refugees. Most of the time they were ecological and economic refugees. I don't use the WW3 trope in my setting since I found it to be overused. There would be numerous bush wars, on the other hand. Thus, having a lot of psychotic veterans.

Digital STDs

Corporate employees all get ID chips implanted. Access codes are stored on those chips and open doors, lifts, etc., give access to corporate mag-lev, serve during ID checks...

Sometimes the info on those chips get hacked - usually when the salaryman visits a yakuza club and spends some time with a geisha that is equipped with an ID chip scanner.

Cyberbrains are required to use cyberware. It is the man-machine interface, converting digital data in neural data. Cyberbrains often store a lot of information. They also get targeted by hackers. The hack is usually done during use of illegal SimStim or skill chips, or when jacked in shady adult VR worlds.

>How has war or other apocalyptic events shaped your setting in the past?
A while back there was the Chinese Civil War between the communists and the nationalists. Due to a lack of Russian military intervention as well as a Japanese/Korean allied force assisting the nationalists, the country split in two. Then there was the series of conflicts that the Russian Federation waged in the Middle East over resources and land, which allowed a German-led EU to form after the economic collapse of France, Spain, and Britain.
>Are there lots of augmented veterans?
Yeah, tons. After the Russian wars, many fled to North African countries like Egypt, Lybia, and Sudan. Others fled to countries like Greece or parts of Eastern Europe. And of course there were ex-military people that started/joined their own defense contractor corps or PMCs. And many more just flooded into central Russia or India to escape the war.
>what about refugee crises?
As alluded to previously, refugees from Middle Eastern countries spread all across Europe and North Africa, from countries like Afghanistan, Syria, and countries that were previously countries of the USSR. Many went into India as well though many refugees from Europe following the economic collapse
>Is the war still going on somewhere
Russia is gearing up for war with the North African Coalition and a Japanese-led East Asian Alliance is lobbying for war with communist China. But no wars are going on right now
>or is it definitely over?
The corps lend some semblance of peace and balance but even they have their own internal/external conflicts. So not everything is peaceful yet.
>>
>>54974803
Suppose North Korea gets toppled. I wonder would some North Korean refugees not drop their faith in their Supreme Leader as a god? Would there be Juche radicals?
>>
>>54974803
But world war 3 makes for such a great cyberpunk start off
>>
>>54971307
Because I'm uncreative I'm using a slightly scaled back version of the twilight war from twilight 2000 to kick off my setting. Though that happened 50cyears ago, lots of wars have resulted from it, such as Manchuria's conquest of former China, the various wars in the former United states, and several fierce Hispanic vs Portuguese wars in South America
>>
>>54971307
>How has war or other apocalyptic events shaped your setting in the past?
The Sino-Indian War turned radiological in the end, so even though the Chinese won, there was a flood of refugees from China to the US. Only global military deescalation over the prior decades kept things from going WW3.
>Are there lots of augmented veterans, what about refugee crises?
Not a lot of the former, but tons of the latter. The previously mentioned military deescalation, however, has led to an explosion in PMCs, security firms, independent professional troubleshooters, and other thugs for hire, so you still see lots of heavy hardware on the street.
>Is the war still going on somewhere, or is it definitely over?
War's over, but memories are more lasting, and survivors on both sides are keeping the violence alive using corporate shadow wars and inter-gang skirmishes over turf as a proxy.
>>
What are some plots that you've run or wanted to run? I'm worried that one centered around an ai might feel a bit played out.

I'm working out my own Megacorp for some unamed Cyberpunk universe, but preferably one where the technology for spaceflight is there, but it ain't as easy as just starting your car and going down the road — no, it's still tough, kinda expensive, and an untamed sort of spaceflight.

Anyway, here is what I got so far.
(Pic semi-related, it's what I want the corporate logo, the vibe of it, the colors, to feel like.

Sixteen (four from each Bureau) Head Staff Directors acting as a Board of Advisors that lobby along with the four Bureau Chiefs as a whole for innovation and guidance. Company decisions are made by the group as a whole - no majority votes any referendums and motions. No company wide CEO. The advisory council is made up each of the four Bureau Chiefs (with 2 votes each) and their respective four Head Staff Directors each (with 1 vote each), with thusly 20 members on the council, with 8 possible votes by the Bureau Chiefs and 16 possible votes by Head Staff Directors for the quarterly board meeting. Anonymous voting on measures following deliberation must reach a 5/6 consensus before the motion may be approved. While Bureau Chiefs govern their sector with sole authority if it falls within their purview, corporation-wide decisions must be made by all.
While each bureau must maintain an executive strata of 1 Chief, 4 Head Staff Directors, and 4 Head Executive Managers per Head Staff Director, the number of managers, officers, and indeed employees etc. beneath each Head Executive Manager will vary with the requirements of the Bureau.

Ex:
BUREAU OF RECONNAISSANCE
Chief of Reconnaissance
- Head Staff Director of Meteorologic, Geographic, and Hydrographic Research
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager

- Head Staff Director of Pathfinding
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager

- Head Staff Director of Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager

- Head Staff Director of Expedition Analysis
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager
* Head Executive Manager

What would be some good job titles for the four Head Staff Directors wonker under the four other 3 other Chiefs of Bureaus?

The guy from DF2020 cannot draw for shit. Even the guns that were good looking to start with, look like shit when he redraws them. I'm all for gunporn, but having 1000 guns for a RPG makes no sense - especially considering that many will have the same stats anyway. Shadowrun makes about everything wrong, apart of their guns. There aren't that many, but they cover everything you need and they are well depicted.

Well, the justification I've been using is that the internet, even with VPNs and the like, is too well policed and monitored to get away with the heavy duty computing necessary to crack modern encryption so you gotta bring your bulky hardware with you and try and crack stuff on site.

Which is all kind of bullshit, but I think it makes enough sense. It does mean that all hacking is "instanced" instead of doing it in the wilderness of the net like in classic cyberpunk though.

Japanese cyberpunk often features psychic powers and body horror. Here's a pretty good article about Japanese cyberpunk and the differences with Western cyberpunk: http://www.midnighteye.com/features/post-human-nightmares-the-world-of-japanese-cyberpunk-cinema/

Well, there's stuff like Stars my Destination which is tenuously very early cyberpunk.

There's also Angela Mitchell in the sprawl trilogy who can access the net with her mind, but that's a little different.

Cyberdecks are part of cyberpunk. I'd simply consider them as the computers that are required to benefit from the advantages of a neural interface.
>>
Therefore it wouldn't look like the pictures I posted, but rather like a small box with connections for the neural interface cable, some dataports jacks and a power source.
>>
>>
>>54983632
decks are one of the core aspects of cyberpunk. in my setting they are mini computers to allow for direct interfacing when larger ones aren''t on hand. i think of them like sized down laptops speced for hackers. anything that isnt built for corps or the government is super cheap for the regular runner/decker.

Anyone ever ran a 2020 two-man game? Would appreciate any experiences or advice.

Circumstances lead into only two being able to make into a game I'm planning and they picked a solo and a corporate, so I should be able to cook something up plot wise, but I'm just not sure if the gameplay itself will be bearable.
>>
>>54992004
I've run two-man games in other system, it only works if both players are ready to really take action and push the narrative. Otherwise you get big Mexican standoffs where nobody does anything because they want to be passive, but obvs the party can't support that. Expect to be really hands-on, in case of slack.
>>
>>54992004
Haven't played 2020, but have played two man games. I'd advise buffing the players so they can perform the roles of a full group, rather than toning down challenges to meet regular PC levels.
>>
>>54983823
You seem to forget the 14mm used by Thresher.
>>
>>54993073
I knew I was forgetting something. My statement remains technically correct, because 14 mm's only used in Thresher gear, not SLA Industries.

The 091 uses 17 mm pistol, which doesn't even have stats.
>>
>>54987218
I think one of the most important things about Cyberdecks from a gameplay perspective, is they are a lot easier to upgrade and or steal than any sort of implants.

Implanted cybernetics are like class features, your character gets them, and they keep them. They might come at some sort of cost, but for the most part they are just a reward for character advancement.

Non implanted gear like guns, armor, or decks however is easy come, easy go. Characters can use, abuse, lose, and re-use them. The might be loaned to them by their employers for a specific job, or they might be taken as loot. Some gear like decks, powered armor, or smartguns might require cybernetic interfaces to use properly. And that answers the question of why the players are getting this gear specificly. If anybody could use it, Mr Johnson could hire anybody instead of a bunch of drug addicts with shady pasts.

Of course, it's also possible to steal or otherwise replace implants, but that gets more into the body horror aspect of Cyberpunk. Putting an RFID chip into your hand for keyless entry to corporate facilities and cashless transactions at all corporate affiliated retailers, seems like a great idea until muggers start chopping off hands, then people start realizing real quick why robbers used to say "your money or your life."
>>
>>54987387
Another advantage of a cyberdeck, is it's probably easier to do certain computations outside of your body. A human brain is one kind of computer designed to operate at a very specific temperature and clock speed. An external deck can mount better heat syncs, and thus be overclocked more safely. You really want that shit in your brain? Just put an interface between your hardware and your wetware, and make sure it's not so expensive people would crack your skull open to pull it out.

Kids these days.

>>54988786
This, most people live in urban centers because everywhere else is depopulated, and most modern farming is done vertically/industrially. The total global population in a cyberpunk world could be less than a billion, and you'd never be able to tell by looking at the bread lines. The caring capacity of our planet is determined by food rather than living space. You can fit all 6 billion people into an area smaller than Rhode Island if you don't mind them starving to death immediately after. Their cell phones would also clog up the local networks as well. Explains why phones are sometimes rare in cyberpunk. Corporate hordes the wireless bandwidth for themselves.

>>54988082
Easier to hack than meatbags. How good is your crypto? How many individual minds share the keys to your power? How many of those minds trust each other more than you? It's a mistake many of or corporate overlords continue to insist on making IRL. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to pay more for less. But that's not something most meatbags really understand. If I were an AI, I'd make sure lots of humans loved me, and loved working for me, because for me understanding how to make them happy would be trivial. Then I'd sabotage the drones working for other AIs using any means necessary. I might even use a few robots, but I'd make sure they were smart enough to avoid being manipulated, and content enough to agree with my goals.
