Have you ever run a campaign set in during the crusades, /tg/? And if you want to; how'd you do it? (name your favourite character from the crusades - christian or muslim)
hardmode; no revisionist autism from either side
I played in a crusade game.
It ended when my crusader read a page from the Necronomicon and something from beyond came down upon Jeruzalem and all of mankind became like the Old Ones, free from delusion and morality, murdering and killing themselves in glee at the revelation of the true face of reality.

I guess the occult could play a major part in a crusades game, considering how centered it is on religion and related themes. What system did you use?

CoC Dark Ages.
Everyone knows that you should never trust people that can read in (vanilla 1920's) CoC, but since I played a crusader full of crusading fervour, the other players never really internalized the "DON'T TRUST PEOPLE THAT CAN READ" lesson. Or they never really thought about that a crusading knight knows how to read, that reading comes with the whole knightly upbringing package.
I had a "Holy War" going on in the background setting lore in my D&D game from 2 years ago.
The Nations of Kartolia and Abyssid are sending invasion fleets and raiding Basilica. In response the other kingdoms are sending Questing Knights across the land to defend. However the lands of Basilica are also being ravaged by a magical plague so it's truly dire times.
However the PCs' adventure took place in Gothos so they only heard about the war in passing, they were killing a lich and unleashing a Storm Spirit.

>CoC Dark Ages
Fucking of course. How could I not think of that.
It's a game I've been meaning to try out; I just never got the opportunity. The idea of literacy being dangerous within the context of the setting because of occult tomes is very amusing.
