I prefer my settings be consistent. If it is serious grimdark keep it serious if it is tongue and cheek grimdark keep it tongue in cheek. Don't have a serious grimdark setting and also have Killbane the Skull Lord who only drinks from the skulls of his enemies and keeps demons (blood thirster style not succubi) chained up in his dungeon to use as sex slaves. Likewise don't have a grimdark setting with a race of Tom Bombadils.

That being said my setting isn't really grimdark, I tried to make it a relatively culturally accurate early medieval style setting. Sure slavery exists and climbing the social ladder is hard if not impossible for some with endemic warfare being common but your odds of dying violently are still relatively low and humanity shows no signs of being in danger as a species.

You know, it's strange: I loathe LotR style halflings and WoW style gnomes and goblins in RPGs. I mean it, I hate them completely; the very notion of hobbits' existence outside of Tolkien's works irritates me, and their gnomish and kender derivatives far moreso. But if you make them cartoonish animal people I suddenly don't mind them being around at all. I'm not sure if it's because I find quirky midgets weird or because I grew up with so many cartoons with silly animal people, but I can't deny it makes a big difference to me. Been in/around fur fandom since 2001.

I've noticed there's 3 sources of attraction to furries.

1) Xenophiles, who put the emphasis of a human brain in the characters they find sexy. These guys want to fuck all the aliens of Mass Effect and Halo, werewolves, furries of various shapes and sizes, kobolds, dragons, transformers, etc. What matters is that they are exotic beings, that is what makes them attractive. I THINK this is the majority, but that may be my bias of personal experience.

2) Zoophiles, people whose attraction comes from the creature being LESS sapient and bestial, or from the creature performing functions of or being like real world animals. This is where you get the lion king and balto crowd.

3) Super Autismos. People who can ONLY jack off to very specific things and will pay anything to get it. Will autistically screech if ONE thing is off, I.E. a pokemon has a human dick, or is in a straight image.

I love how exaggerated their facial expressions and body language can get. I can easily see why they were used as an easy mode for making animated characters more emotive.
