There's obviously a lot of information I don't have about your setting, but why would anyone agree to banning magic in the equivalent of world war one? Wasn't that the one where people were gassing each other?

I came up with this like ten minutes ago, this stuff is why I made the thread. I'm thinking magic caused some sort of megadeath event several decades prior and mages were genocided to extremely small numbers in the aftermath. Obviously doesn't work if magic is extremely commonplace.

Perhaps have there be some serious shit go down that caused magic use (openly) to be banned, kind of like how gas weapons were banned in the aftermath of World War I.

The preceding war wouldn't be wolrd war scale, but perhaps a cumulative backlash against Crimean war / Franco-prussian war tier engagements

Just keep magic as something only very, very few people can do and you don't need to contrive a justification for the ban. But if it was that powerful it'd probably end up much like >>54944147
