Yep, it's from a spanish painter called Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau.

Question: why were shields made concave like this (from the opponent's perspective)?

Is it to guide the sword thrust into the shield and not off the shield/into the gut of the wielder?

Some of them? Yes, absolutely. Many of them, even, but there was precedent for using those in battle.

By the time most of those fancy engraved or gilded suits started showing up was well into the high medieval era. They weren't your rank and file knight or soldier armor, they were lordly sets. They required resources and time to make, and they served to make their wearer very difficult to kill. Not only was most of this armor excellent protection physically, it was excellent protection socially. If you saw a man with fancy armor, you're better off to capture and ransom the dude, rather than kill him.

The broadcast of status like that served to say to rank and file soldiers what proper heraldry said to educated knights and their ilk: this dude is important, and has money, and will pay you (or your liege) for his life.

yes. that's called a flat top helmet. they were popular during the first couple of crusades but went out of style because the flatness on the top meant that solid hits could damage the skull through shock

I'd say rapier. The width of blades seen varies a lot, and if you try to split those swords seen there off to be something other than a rapier, then you're drawing a very arbitrary line in a decently fat part of the bell curve. Usually it seems to come down to the idea that the rapier was this needle-slim, light and civilian weapon, meaning anything that doesn't fit this criteria has to be something else, whereas as far as I can tell the reality is that we don't see any real divide in the swords they had back then between a rapier group and an "the other ones" group, we just see one big pile with outliers in various directions. We could perhaps do a rapier/sword split with some of the late cup hilts as they seem to go for either extremely thin or decidedly wide, that seems to be about it, and even there I may simply not have seen enough of the in-betweens so I'd be cautious about it.

The Mapuche did loot and copy the Spanish invaders successfully, they even had their own tercios and maybe cavalry. One of the few native peoples that successfully defeated the Spanish in field battles. Sadly they were defeated once the surrounding Latin states got machine guns.

Some of you mind answering this?

>would an Obi (the sash that holds the katana in pic related) be useful for a knight?

I'm mixing a bit of both elements here, so I thought that Obi might be useful to hold something like a small pick or axe, also I don't think it would flop around that much, also did sheated swords flop around that much? I want them to be more still.

You could use it for that, but then again, you could just use a belt. A number of warhammers, battleaxes and the like have bet hooks/clips.

> also I don't think it would flop around that much, also did sheated swords flop around that much?
Probably not to a terrible degree in general, though it should depend quite a bit on the exact suspension style.

These are called Sword and Buckler or "Rodeleros". They formed the bulk of Spanish soldiers along with the pikemen for a while, somewhat inspired by the Roman Legions, but were in time completely supplanted by the later.

it's more expensive as crossbows are around 48 groschen and the proto arquebus starts at 60

Also obviously that's only true for one specific city in one specific period of time. Economy changes greatly around that time.

Interesting. So you say, the whole pointy shoe thing came from this type of footwear being good for horse riding, then after the usual civilian fashion changed to prefer the "bear paw" type, the actual knight armor came to reflect it in turn?
>>
>>54953218
I'm not entirely up to date on shoes so I don't know excatly when the heel became a thing but they made a big effort to make really pointy shabbatons which were then worn only on armours that are for riding on horseback, the on foot armours didn't really had it as far as I know, regardless if the user was a simple knight, a noble or the emperor.

Also the bearpaw shoes are in turn entirely an on foot thing, be it in armours or in regular shoes (And if I'm not mistaken it comes after the pointy shoes fashion trend)

What I don't know is where does pointy shoes in civilian trend comes from. Is it because it was good for horseriding OR armoured horseriding needed it so civilian fashion copied it? Fuck knows.

Also I can be wrong

also about armours copying civilian fashion: that happened all the time.

There are several examples of armours try to mimic actual cloths, but to go even further armour changes as the beauty ideal changes.
For a great deal of time the ideal man had the hourglass shape, then in late 16th it shifted to be slightly or actually being fat. We see a fuckton of cloths and fashions that puts a great deal of effort into make you look fat. Around that time peascod armour which does similar things became a thing too (and there are several doublets that look similar to the peascod stlye so there is that)
>>
>>54953336
Really, thats fucking bizarre, I've always thought the opposite. also, why do people chose pointy shoes over bear foot? point shoes sound like it would be a mess to walk on, especially over stairs.
>>
>>54953359
why do girls use high heeled shoes? Fashion. (and it makes them taller and stuff like that but whatever, still it's far from comfortable or so am I told)

Also bear foot came after pointy shoes. so it was an improvement.
Also not all shoe were pointy, in some cities there were rules how pointy your shoes can be. very pointy were only allowed for nobles and such.
>>
>>54953416
It just that I can't help but feel that it would bitch to walk on that, especially if you were dismounted.

Kings, and any other nobility too, would tend to see themselves as cavalrymen first and foremost. Their armour was made accordingly. For things like tournament fighting on foot, tonlets would cover things quite well, possibly with some advantage as well. Fashion, better movement, dunno. The need for such armour may also be somewhat limited, your arse should generally be out of harms way even when dismounted.

The current day infatuation with Eddie Eight's unfinished suit is probably mostly a matter of people noticing a feature there that they've never seen on any other harness. So they get a codpiece-shaped peg to hang it on in their memories. Between armour covering everything being something that can seem very good to anyone, and the articulation of it all clearly being quite an accomplishment, we then get to the hype stage, especially when it's begin perceived as unique.

Now while it appears to have been rare, it obviously isn't unique. I don't know who the two suits I just posted were made for, probably someone with pretty deep pockets, but nothing beyond that.

The harness is functionally finished, but lacks any form of decoration, which sure as hell won't fly with someone like Edward VIII. It had been commissioned so he'd have a new, state of the art harness to wear for the dismounted part of the upcoming tournament at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, but a change/clarification of the rules specifically banning locking gauntlets put an end to that. So work on the harness ceased with it still black from the forge. That it's as shiny as it is now is due to latter cleaning and polishing.

Instead an entirely new harness was commissioned instead (simply replacing the gauntlets was apparently not to Henry's taste), this one.

Nestorian christianity was spreading all throughout the asian steppes and converted a sizable minority of the population before later being smothered by both islam and budhism, depending on the region. I think a number of Khans had nestorian wives, though i think most of them were either Tengri ( religion of most steppe nomads including mongols, all varieties of turk peoples, early bulgarians, early magyars(hungarian ancestors), etc before conversion by one of the large religions) or buddhist.

The cross you see is the typical nestorian cross.

Well, I'd at least consider it plausible that Henry's goal here was to style on everyone attending with his new, high tech gauntlets (both in just showing everyone that he had them, and also hoping to gain a substantial advantage in the tournament with with), while the French king on the other hand most definitely did not want this to happen, and thus banned them with or without first trying to get some for himself.

Divorced, beheaded, died

One theory I've seen is that the not so benign temperament of Edward VIII, as well as some prominent figures at the time ("The Plantagenet temperament" in England, Gustav Vasa, his sons and at least one grandson here in Sweden) may to a large degree have been because tournaments were such a big thing back then. Plenty of hard blows to the head raises a young man to be more a man of war than a man of compassion, as the bits of your brain that take care of empathy and impulse control are the bits that suffer the most here.

It show that the armour is designed to look cool rather than functional, because, let's face it, the vast majority of the time you won't be fighting, but wearing or handling/transporting your armour. In that case, those spikes will figuratively be the bane of your existence, as you constantly have to watch out not to puncture literally everything around it (including yourself during maintenance or whatever).

Also, armour is designed to let blows glance off if possible, as the blunt impact will still at least annoy the wearer, and might impede movement (essentially being pushed around). Also, for lances and the like, the blunt trauma may still be enough to kill or temporarily incapacitate the wearer (at least enough to be finished off while dazed). In that case, the spikes will essentially add as blow catchers (think shelltraps on tanks).
Of course, this is all assuming you manage to design your porcupine armour in such a way that the spikes never get in the way of movement.
That said, there were probably some outliers who added some spikes anyway, but I'd wager that it was nowhere near as bad as some fantasy armours.

tl;dr; because spikes tend to be wildly impractical and be more of a nuisance.

As a larper, take what I say with a grain of salt, but I use an Japanese-style obi when fighting to hold multiple throwing axes and a straight sword and dagger and it works great.

Semi off topic question, in an episode of game of thrones they mention putting leather over the breastplates because winter. Was there a real practice of putting leather over armor during cold seasons? Something to do with preventing metal freezing or something? An extra layer for warmth?

It's armour leaving plenty of room for padding around the head. Somewhat akin to the great helm in-that respect, but the round shape makes it more apparent here I guess. I suspect it's a tournament armour thing.

>>54963578
Fashion. They show people that you're rich and successful enough to afford a lot of fabric.

>>54967054
I've never heard of anything like that. I doubt it'd do all that much good in the end as well, a single layer of leather doesn't provide much insulation, it isn't something you see a lot of in cold weather gear modern or ancient.

who said anything about female? IIRC we've established itt that hourglass figure was "in" for men; as were high heels, actually designed for nobleMEN.

Being flamboyant as fuck is fine when the enemy actually has to be withing a few hundred metres and standing in broad daylight to stand a solid chance at killing you.

No, Mongols too. Nestorianism actually briefly shared the steppe with Manicheaism, but the Uyghurs got BTFO'd centuries before Ghenghis, and Nestorianism survived as a significant religion in Central Asia pretty much until the time of Timur.

Note that landsknecht, and many mercenaries, just picked whatever they could get from the field and mixed the fabrics and sow them together. This is one of the reasons why they were so colourful.
