Alright /tg/, here's a question for you.

Which psychic power is generally more broken by default, the ability to move things with your mind using telekinesis or the ability to read people's minds using telepathy?

Depends on how you define all of these powers. Just reading active thoughts isn't too OP - but if it covers everything including instinctual actions, it's way worse (You don't think outloud "I'm going to do this and that", you generally just do it. If telepaths can read that, it's OP)...

And for telekinesis, it depends as well. Can you shoot mind bullets and how hard? Can you kill someone by squeezing their heart with your brain? If it's something reasonable like applying human-like force to an object at distance with line of sight, it's OK.

Really depends on the degree of each. Telekinesis can range from Mage Hand-style moving tiny objects slowly over short distances, to being capable of literally moving mountains. Similarly, Telepathy varies from being able to pick up surface thoughts of immediately nearby individuals, to being able to go rooting around for specific bits of information.

Then, it depends on context. Combat-centric or traversal-centric situations are going to generally favor Telekinesis, while Telepathy is more useful in diplomacy/investigation.

On a setting level, I'd say that telepathy probably has more repercussions than telekinesis, as you can get around a few people being able to lift big rocks, but it's much more difficult to get around your top-secret government intel being completely susceptible to untracable theft.

It depends on the situation.
TK: best for combat, labor, and travel
TP: best for espionage, insider trading, and diplomacy
I'd go for telekinesis as long as it allows the stopping of projectiles in mid-flight.

As said, there are many extremes.

You could have Tactile telekinesis and basically be Superman (Superboy specifically but my headcannon is that Superman just has it on a whole nother level from him)

Or you could be Professor X

If you were a bullshit power gamer the choice is simple, telekinesis.

Active ability vs passive. With telekinesis you can do all kinds of bullshit from crushing someone between two objects, to forcing objects into or out of someone.

With telepathy you can...read minds. Wow, the guard wants to kill the freak of nature, I had no idea. The BBEG wants to take over the world, who would have guessed.

Sure it is. Especially in games of pretend like this. Over power rating is measured by bodies, not utility. And you can kill more with the ability to move objects than you can by reading thoughts

Telepathy is far more useful, but telekinesis is far more lethal.

In the modern era, telepathy becomes even more useful, because information is power. And if, as you described, you can read anyone's mind no matter where they are as long as you have a name and face, well you just got access to every single politician, celebrity and facebook user's SSN, bank information, dirty secrets, industrial secrets, desires and fears.

Perfect information is invaluable. You'd have to be a chuuni fool or a psychopath to pick telekinesis in the modern era.

Think about how much work you could get done, legitimate or otherwise, if you could always figure out the right thing to say to make someone dance to your tune. With a sharp enough mind, knowing someone's reactions to everything you do means they're essentially like putty in your hands.

Hell, you'll even have a hard time ever being caught, as long as you know who could be doing the catching. Just periodically read their minds and see if they've caught onto you, and which safe houses of yours they know about. You should have no problem buying new safe houses what with your infinitely valuable skill.

Passwords for military equipment are literally at your disposal, just fucking pretend you're a military officer and fucking drone strike some fools, or impersonate someone from fbi/cia and have a death squad remove the inhabitants of a town, telepathy in that variation is op af

Telepathy, but only because it's usually handled poorly. Just because you can "hear" someone's thoughts doesn't mean you should understand them if they're outside your knowledge base. This should also extend to languages that are different enough from each other. There's a bunch of concepts that you simply shouldn't understand

I don't think you've really thought this through. Those guards have guns; unless your power also gives you instant reflexes, one of them is eventually going to hit you, and since your power also doesn't give you regenerative abilities you're probably going to die.
Yes, you can carry shields around with your mind. Yes, you can just wear body armour. But at some point you have to sleep, and if you've really been causing that much chaos someone's going to be waiting for that opportunity to take you down.

Telepathy doesn't make you better at murder. It gives you the tools to convince people they don't want to fight you in the first place.

Neither are "broken by default". There are many ways to keep either one in check, including modulating the scale, power, and requirements if each.

Say if you can move one 20lb object that you can see and throw it as fast as a baseball, that's not going to be too bad as superpowers go. Likewise, only being able to read a cooperative target's inner desires within 10ft while meditating isn't exactly busted either.

While both can be abused and twisted to derail a plot, the worst power to deal with when it's not restricted in scope is Precognition in its various manifestations.
Unless you limit time scale and accuracy of predictions, you're basically allowing that character to "loop until perfect success" as they work through the potential permutations to get what, for them, is the best result possible.
