Why so many people recommend Optimistic Gambler for raging classes? I understand the extra turns are nice, but you get them at random, and even if you expect 1 extra and play with it you get fatigued at the end so if you misread the combat and decide to end it earlier you're fucked.

They're essentially a single person split between two twinned bodies that act independently. No caster shenanigans since casting spells requires both twins' undivided attention, but each of them can make full round actions otherwise.

Can a fighter equip much other than shields and armor/TL boosts at higher levels? Can't upgrade weapons past the initial two slots, so all those BPs are kinda... bigger shields or bust?

I mean I guess you could swap things out for two nuke launchers per arc twin-linked... Can you add a turret somehow? The weapon upgrade section talks about the maximum each ship (including tiny/small sied) can add to turrets, but doesn't say if that's an arc you can buy into if it didn't exist yet?

Thinking about taking diehard on an invulnerable rager barbarian (and the prereq. endurance). Do you think that this is a good move? Haven't made a full BAB melee character in pathfinder yet.

I simplified it to be similar to a videogame.

Build a Mine, generate a set amount of Ore per month. Appraise the Ore. Find a buyer. Sell it at a better price for profit.

Build a settlement. Get 100 villagers. Give them jobs. Build a Bank. Collect Taxes.

Build a Barrack. Assign Troops. Deduct your monthly tax income for the upcost of the troops salaries.

Everything I made using an Google Sheet with a lot of formulas. I even included tiny details like the cost of trained and untrained labor, etc.

Economics and Kingdom Building doesn't need to be difficult. If you can simplify it to a bunch of Formulae on a spreadsheet.

Having a Discord chat is a good idea. During a session, we focus on the plot and combat aspects, some of the politics, etc.
Off-session, we focus on things like kingdom building, finer details with the trade deals we establish, future planning etc.

I have played through a second session of Starfinder at 1st level, this time as a human solarian. tl;dr = It was awful, and we died.

In my first session (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2uimg?Trip-Report-My-first-Starfinder-session), our party was composed of an ysoki operative (ghost), a pike-wielding vesk soldier (blitz), a human mystic (xenodruid), and an android technomancer. Although our soldier had major trouble with attack rolls due to poor luck, we blazed through the adventure with flying colors. We trounced three skill-based noncombat sequences and three battles with ease. We experienced not a single hitch, there were no tense moments, and our combat victories were foregone conclusions. Most notably, my operative was unquestionably the MVP of the entire party; they were a juggernaut of a skill monkey who handled the great majority of the party's skill checks, and they put up a ferocious fight thanks to trick attacks as well. Granted, the GM was running the operative (ghost) RAW.

In this new, second session, we played through the same adventure again, trying to minimize our metaknowledge. Our party was smaller: a human solarian, a human soldier (sharpshoot) with an azimuth artillery laser, and a human mystic (healer). The GM opted to ease up on the skill-based noncombat-sequences and to downgrade the encounters to half their original strength (e.g. an encounter with four equal-powered enemies went down to only two opponents) to compensate for a weaker party. In other words, we were playing through a significantly easier version of the adventure, with a small yet unavoidable amount of metaknowledge atop that.

I had built my solarian as best as I could: Strength 18, Dexterity 14, Heavy Armor Proficiency, Weapon Focus (advanced melee weapons), a tactical pike, and hidden soldier armor. Unfortunately, this left me with exactly 1 Resolve Point, and made Black Hole and Supernova nigh-unusable. This means that for all intents and purposes, my character was a classless character with a +1 bonus to damage rolls and a pathetic 1 Resolve Point. I have no idea why Charisma is the solarian's key ability score; it should really be Strength. Raising Charisma would have meant sacrificing Strength or Dexterity, and I was unwilling to do either as the party's only front-liner.

What anyone serious about playing a solarian should do is take a level of soldier (blitz) as their very first character level. This grants Strength or Dexterity as a key ability score, proficiency with heavy armor, +4 initiative, and +10 speed, thereby solving a host of the solarian's issues. From there, take solarian levels.

In any case, the session. Our party struggled through the two skill-based noncombat sequences, even taking into account that the GM had made them easier. Whereas my Intelligence 16 operative carried the entire group outside of combat, my Intelligence/Wisdom/Charisma 10 solarian had a hard time with such things. Much of the time, they just did not have the skills with which to meaningfully contribute, and their skill bonuses were not especially high. Such is the hard lot of a Strength-primary character: twiddling thumbs when not in battle. We definitely suffered for having no operative around, and no Intelligence-based character altogether.

On the subject of Solarians; do you think allowing Solar Armor solarians to gain charisma as a flat bonus to AC and saves, and solar weapon solarians to gain it as a flat bonus to attack and damage rolls (in melee) would help them out a lot?

The first fight was rough. We were only three PCs, but the GM had halved the number of enemies in the battle, so in theory, it should have been an even easier fight than before. Perhaps due to poor rolls on our side, we blundered through much of it. My character stayed in photon mode throughout the whole battle, and never used Black Hole or Supernova. Even if my character was a Charisma 16 lashunta solarian instead, it would not have mattered, as there were no good opportunities to actually use either revelation; the enemies were too spread-out, as a single melee unit and a single ranged unit.

The second battle was a catastrophe. It was against a single melee unit that the GM had downgraded to accommodate the weaker party. Naturally, Black Hole and Supernova had no place here, so I would not have used them even if my character's Charisma was any better. My character was thus nothing more than a classless character with a +1 bonus to damage rolls and a measly 1 Resolve Point. We did our best, but the rolls turned against us.

Here is where the 1 Resolve truly screwed us over: both the solarian and the mystic went down, and it just so happened that the mystic was also down to 1 Resolve Point, because they spent it all earlier restoring Hit Points mid-battle via Healing Channel. Our soldier was busy trying to take down the dangerous enemy, and by the time said opponent was dead, the solarian and the mystic were likewise dead.

I imagine that we would have fared much more aptly with more fortunate dice luck, but that does not change the fact that the operative was performing at mediocre capacities outside of combat, that there were no good moments to actually use Black Hole and Supernova (never mind that my character had to have Charisma 10), and that low Resolve Points truly screw a party over.

If you are still set on playing a solarian after this, take a level in soldier (blitz) first. Trust me. The solarian was a disappointment.

Played on Monday as a 4th level Lashunta Solarion, in a party with a Drone Mechanic, a fucked if I know what he did Technomancer, and a melee Envoy. It went... okay.

Decided to ignore Dex entirely, and went 18 Str (20 after the crystal), Con 12, and Cha 14. Which turned out to be the right call. The extra points in stamina served me better than a +1 AC would have. Feats were Weapon Focus (Solar Blade) and Deadly Aim.

Despite doing the most damage by a wide margin, after playing it I'd agree that Solarion is still very much a garbage tier class; quite possibly worse than Envoy. A statement I don't make likely.

The biggest issue the Solarion has, is that unlike every other striker, they're stuck using a mental stat for their Resolve. Which means an Envoy who uses their blade needs Str, Dex, Con, and Cha, in a system that is purposefully designed to choke the life out of MAD characters. Whereas an Armor Solarion practically has no class features because the Solar Armor is roughly worthless.

The thing that bugs me, is that the Solarion only needs a minor amount of tweaking to actually be pretty good. First, as 2hu mentioned, key score needs to be Dex or Str. Second, the Solar Blade should have three options, that you can swap between at will. A 2-handed weapon, a 1-handed weapon/shield combo, and a 1-handed operative weapon.
Third, at 5th level (a completely dead level for some reason!), the Solarion should get 1.5 Str to damage when using the 2-handed blade, and dex to damage when using the Operative blade.

I would echo the utter uselessness of the Solarion outside of combat (Lashunta telepathy notwithstanding). For some godforsaken reason, the Solarion gets a bunch of class features devoted to skill usage, but doesn't have the ability points to spend to use any of them other than the 3 classic charisma skills, a job that's done infinitely better by the Envoy.

I like the idea of Super Nova and Blackhole, I even got to nuke the boss and some minions with a nova (which did less damage than a sword swing would have, given my 14 Cha), but the crippling thing about them is the charge time. Starfinder very much punishes being all clumped up, so even if the enemies start in a perfect position to make the most of your ability, you can't use it for three rounds. The simple fact is that all the Zenith revelations are just unweildy and rarely worth expending actions on.

At first I could maybe see how everything was supposed to fit together, but after actually playing the Solarion, I haven't a goddamn clue what the rationale was behind the majority of the class's design choices.

Dunno a ton about what the Mechanic was doing, since it's the one class I haven't read, but they had a 30 ft. Cone sonic weapon that came in handy in every fight, and held their own in terms of damage.

The Envoy rocked the skill encounters, and was perpetually Clever Feint/Not the Face-ing every enemy, which made everyone else's job a lot easier. Though, the player admitted the character definitely would have been better just using a Gun.

It also sounds like things have taken a rather pleasant return to a grittier era of low-level PC combat, and that skill challenges actually have meaning and are not co-opted by spells (at least right away).

I'm looking forward to my group's first sit down session this friday to take a crack at it.

Oh, no, I disagree there. I felt justified in taking Dexterity 14, as the extra 2 AC and initiative mattered. If I had opted for Charisma 14 instead, my character would have still been stomped, just in a different way: being hit more often and having only 3 Resolve Points.

If the party's soldier was a "tactical pike and hidden soldier armor" 1st-level character as well, then there is a good chance my character would not have died, yes.

My solarian would have been just as mediocre as a ranged character. Solarians have proficiency with advanced melee weapons but not longarms, so that would mean spending a feat on Longarm Proficiency. At least I could have benefited from solar armor then.

Oh, no. Combat in Starfinder generally is not gritty at all, even at 1st level. In our first group, wherein I was playing an operative rather than a solarian, we breezed through combat. We found it not a single bit gritty due to an abundance of Stamina Points, Hit Points, and Resolve Points despite our party's Constitution scores being 10, 10, 10, and 12.

It is just that in the new group with the solarian, that solarian's Resolve 1 truly bit us in the back (but no more so than setting Dexterity to 10), and unfortunate rolls exacerbated this.

If I had opted for Dexterity 10 and Charisma 14, my character would have still been on the ground, due to having taken more instances of damage.

A melee solarian is stuck between a rock and a hard place due to having Charisma as a key ability score. This can be solved by a one-level dip in soldier (blitz), of course.

This character was a 1st-level human. Therefore, an 18/14 spread was the absolute best I could manage.

The Dead Suns adventure path starts at 1st level and ends at 12th level. Anyone intending on playing it would be best served with a similar array that starts with an 18.

A human who starts as a melee soldier (blitz) with Strength 18 and Dexterity 14 and ends as a soldier (blitz) 1/solarian (solar weapon) 11 does not seem too bad at all.

Channel Energy lets you manipulate energy from the positive and negative planes, so if you interpret "the cosmos" as being energy from the material plane, there's some consistency there for using Charisma.

A human melee soldier (blitz) does not have to make this decision. They simply take Strength 18 and Dexterity 14 and call it a day. They will still be awful at noncombat situations, but such is life as a Strength-based character.

It's usually not you manipulating shit, but your deity. So I guess it's how much your begging your deity for some pos/neg energy? I dunno, I never really understood why Clerics weren't Charisma if they're all about currying favor with an entity and Sorcerer's weren't Wisdom.

One thing annoying me reading the paizo forum discussion on this is that everyone seems to just ignore the fact that the solarian is paying for that weapon with a class ability, not ONLY a crystal. They talk about how it's just as good in many levels, while ignoring the fact that it's ONLY just as good in many levels after still paying for gear, and you've lost a starting ability in exchange.

Why does it have to be a MAD class in the first place? Why does a melee soldier (blitz) get to take Strength 18 and Dexterity 14 and be on their merry way, while a solarian has to spend a feat on Heavy Armor Proficiency *and* divert points away from their attack/damage ability score for more survivability?

How is this remotely fair?

Oh it never should have been. I'm just saying it's possible that to make do with such a mess, one has to adjust off the usual values a little. It's absolutely not fair, I'm just saying it MAY help such a character survive a little. The extra resolve point might do more for survivability than the one extra attack and damage do for offense.

The true solution to playing a solarian is to take a level in soldier (blitz) as the character's very first level, for Strength or Dexterity as a key ability modifier, heavy armor proficiency, +4 initiative, and +10 speed.

Then, Charisma can be safely dumped. Completely ignore Black Hole and Supernova, and ignore the existence of graviton mode and graviton revelations. Take Stellar Rush at solarian 2, Plasma Sheath at solarian 4, and Corona at solarian 6.

Are there any alternate rules that allow for a game where the whole party starts out as like, commoners, and then instead of leveling they gain feats/gain individual class features from other classes?
