So they're friends right? Or at least friendly.
Is there a reason they'd fight?

The Eldar are massive dicks who think all other life is inferior to them, and the Tau are massive dicks who think all other ways of life are inferior to their own?
Who do you think are the Ethereal's true masters, the invisible hand that guides Tau's society, their benefactors?
If it would save a single Eldar they'd doom the entire Tau race without batting an eye.

I'm pretty sure canonically they've met and the Eldar have blown the T'au off.
And then they met the Dark Eldar and that went HILARIOUSLY. And the T'au might not understand the distinction...
Actually didn't the Deldar start a war between them once as a joke, and when they figured it out, the T'au tried to reach out to the Eldar and the Eldar blew them off with a huff like a Tsundere?

Understood, but the Tau don't actively threaten the Eldar. They seem to hardly ever interact.

The tau shouldn't even register on the Eldars radar. They're so laughably insignificant and short lived.

The Dark Eldar bully the Tau to piss off the Eldar.

Necrons of course.

The Tau are the Eldar's pet project.

Dark Eldar have interacted with Tau at least twice. The first time they helped them fight off a Tyranid splinter fleet in exchange for Tau "volunteers" for an experiment- they were turned into wracks and other Haemonculus abominations.
Second time the Deldar raided a Tau colony and then led them to an exodite world. The Tau razed the Exodite world in revenge, which pissed off Biel-Tan to the point that they sent a warhost to kick the Tau's ass.
That's modern fluff. In old fluff the Eldar liked the innocence of the Tau and their relative insulation from Chaos. There's a quote from Eldrad saying that the Tau had the potential to be the Eldars' spiritual successor and succeed where they failed as a civilization.

>The Tau are so cool even Eldrad Ulthran said so!!!
That sounds like marketing fanservice to me.
