If you're writing a real plot for your session instead of a vague miasma of things that could happen and preparing NPCs locations and notes on potential encounters, you are doing it wrong.

As a player myself i love it it oh so very much when the dm decides to explore timmy's dark and edgy backstory. Especially when this goes on for 5+ sessions.
Sometimes a derail is needed. Especially when the DM plays favourites.
