/L5R/ returns with the Unicorn Clan this week. Their card preview is up, to be found here: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/8/9/wandering-warriors/

In addition to talking the new LCG, this thread is dedicated to the old CCG, the RPG, and any lore or stories people feel like discussing or sharing.

Thread starter: What's your favorite card from the Unicorn preview, and why? How about from the whole thing shown so far?

All the female Champions have been great. Looking forward to Scorpion, though oddly enough I hope FFG doesn't go the AEG route of making every last Scorpion woman a sultry slut just because Bayushi Kachiko was the original L5R sultry slut.

Here's hoping Shoju doesn't fuck up so hard this time as well.

I'm really glad they added the "weapons only" clause to this guy. He was so useless in certain matchups.

In fact I'd say the Unicorn design is very solid overall. They addressed a lot of concerns with some reasonably clever solutions.
>>
>>54781912
Captive Audience is pretty cool. I foresee a lot of splashing into Crab and Lion decks.
>>
>>54782391
Core set cards are evergreen, so while I don't think a champion shakeup won't happen one day I don't think we're going to see any of the core set ones crash and burn immediately.

I figure future new champions will come in the deluxe boxes since those are the only other evergreen card sets and there might be some kind of deck building rule introduced about not being able to run both in one deck.
>>
>>54782534
To be honest, I fear more for Hotaru than any of the other Champions. Her fiction paints her as entirely too pure, she killed Toturi's brother personally and is in a relationship with Kachiko but doesn't have Hoturi's dickery to keep up with her. She seems like she's being set up to make a really bad move.

Your stronghold card tells you how much influence you have to spend -- it's the number next to the bamboo symbol on the bottom right of your stronghold. You also get 3 extra influence if your clan has a Keeper role.

From there, you spend your influence on including cards in your conflict deck. You can only splash one clan at a time, however. But, say, with 13 influence (core stronghold + Keeper role) one person could splash 3x Captive Audience and 2x Spyglass into their deck.

Oh lord, those French. Her keyword there literally means ''virgin of battle''.

>>
>>54784455
I'm honestly not sure how I would translate it better. Maiden is one of those words that has a lot of individual connotations in English, and I don't think you could find a word in French that would cover the right mix of them.
>>
>>54784502
Spanish has "doncella", and from there you could use "damoiselle" if my dictionary is right. Besides, there was not actual requirement for the shiotome to remain virgins in 1E - they just had to keep from getting knocked up too early into their careers.
>>
>>54784502
Judging by Joan of Arc, pucelle?
>>
>>54783760
At one point, this card could pick up Bushi. It was absurd, especially with >>54783938
>>
>>54784565
>>54784581
Demoiselle might be good, since it connotes nobility along with youth, and the virginity aspect is an undertone, rather than an overtone.

Purcell is old enough French that I don't have a good enough feel for it to judge one way or the other, but my impression is that it connotes virginity much more strongly.

Part of the difficulty is that maiden has a connotation in English that it inherits from its Germanic roots that doesn't seem to be present in French; X-maiden already implies ''female combatant'' for us because of sheildmaiden and similar constructs, and the form has no automatic implication of virginity or marital status. But a quick Google for a translation just gives escrimeuse, which is simething like 'lady fencer'.

Come to think of it, a single-word like that or maybe cavalière might be better than anything ''de bataille''.
>>
>>54784861
Translations be hard, yo.

>>54784289
Ah thanks - only 1 splash at a time is an interesting limitation, but it makes sense for alliance stuff.
And none of the Core strongholds (might there be new strongholds going forward? I'd guess so) have anything other than 10, so yeah, the "keeper/seeker" thing could be pretty important
>>
>>54785567
>Hmm, that "cost 6 or less" thing seems to be a repeated pattern >>54783760 - wonder who else will have it?
Scorpion and Unicorn are the last two factions to be revealed. We know all of the Crane and Lion cards, are missing one Dragon card (a 0-1 cost event), one Crab card (a 2-3 cost character), two Phoenix cards (a 1 cost character and a 2-3 cost character), and one Unicorn card (a 0-2 cost conflict character). We also have all but one neutral card, and the last neutral card is confirmed to have something to do with changing your honor dial bid.

So I doubt we'll be seeing this anywhere else, at least in the core set.
>>

Scorp got spoiled today on a card that does the same thing but you play from hand or your provinces.
>>
I have three of the Launch Kits ordered, how much do you think people would pay for a complete kit?
>>
>>54785819
Fair warning, FFG has a habit of reprimanding and even blacklisting stores that sell Launch Kits straight to individuals instead of using them for their intended purposes. If you want the store you're buying this from to continue to get promotional / tournament material you might want to run the actual tournaments.

They've been doing that with Scorpion reveals lately. Take this. >>54792078 That video isn't cultural appropriation in the slightest. Sure, there's a bunch of white people in various asian-flavored costumes (mostly Japanese, but there's other influences, particularly in the monk), but for fuck's sake, Epic Armoury is a company in Denmark and it's not like there's a whole lot of Japanese larpers in fucking Denmark. It hits a few mild sterotypes, but that's mostly in the narrarion and mostly in regards to "honorable samurai" and shit, which isn't insulting at all. And, to be honest, the fighting and general quality of the video is really nice for a larp. I honestly expected to see something a lot more like pic related.

Do the shi-tien yen-wang give anything to their followers, or are they just worshiped so they don't continue their curse on the unicorn? The moto death priest description says that they are revered, but I'd think they would be mad that they cursed them.
>>
>>54792897
After joining the Rokugani pantheon, the Lords of Death become the arbiters of punishment in the afterlife, and are concerned with the punishment of evil-doers in life as well. The Death Priest Technique is an invocation of their power just like any shugenja can invoke the other Fortunes with the right spell, and disregarding magic, worship of them is probably good for your afterlife-- not in the sense that they favour their servants with lower punishments, though I suppose they might, but that by living according to the precepts of the sentencing judges of the afterlife, you are likely to know just what kinds of things will land you in Gaki-do or Toshigoku, and your lifestyle will naturally shun them.

The other thing to bear in mind is that worship of them is a spiritual duty that *somebody* has to perform; regardless of the bargain that got them there, they are a part of the pantheon, and they perform a spiritual function. As legitimate Fortunes installed in the Celestial Order, they are entitled to reverence, and would be even if their position had been gained for reasons other than lifting their former curse.
>>
>>547943336
Thanks for clearing that up. Also, I don't think that they would impose lesser punishments on their followers, given that they are described as harsh but fair.
Also, nice trips
>>
>>54792408
It has not been, no. It's probably draw a card instead of gaining a fate, though. Either that or gain an honor.

Is it just me, or does it seem like a badly thought out design choice to have Military and Political conflicts simply be different "flavors" of conflict, without having different outcomes?

You might as well just call em Red and Blue conflict, since they basically do the same thing. It feels a bit too gamey, and makes the game less fluffy imo.
>>
>>54794186

To expand on this, I feel like lot about conflicts and the feel of the game in general was lost in this new edition, honestly.

The way that followers work now is just sad. I liked how personalities were strong leaders, and followers were usually groups of soldiers and when you put the cards together you'd make a neat military unit. It actually made conflicts feel like armies clashing.

I know this is autismo at its finest, but having followers now just be "personalities you can play from your hand" makes things a bit silly.
>>
Describe you character's katana, if you have one
>>
>>54794186
It's just you. Balancing 5 outcomes for political and military would prove to hard in modern fast changing metas. Plus all outcomes are perfectly explainable in both military and political way. Adding different political outcomes would only complicate the game without making it any better.

>>
>>54797052
So this might be a stupid question, but which clan do you mean?
>>
>>54781912

So I've been doing some reading on this, as somebody who really only was into the RPG, but did enjoy the LCG format for Netrunner. Looking at this for deckbuilding it looks like your choices of province strongholds gives you your influence amounts, and then you can only splash event cards/attachments, right? So, no random scorpion assassins in your deck, just tricky events.
>>
>>54798146
There are characters in the conflict deck that can be splashed.
>>
L5R 2019.
Deck building has devolved into 40 holdings and 40 Conflict Characters.
Crane honors out first turn by spamming card draw, 0 cost dudes, and honor combos.
Final game of the World Championship did not even take a full turn.
>>
>>54798216
you can only have 10 characters in your conflict deck
>>
>>54798259
Sorry I am going off playtester stuff. The Ninja Stronghold coming up will allow unlimited chars in conflict.
>>
>>54797832
Lion or crab at a guess.
>>
>>54798276
That doesn't seem like either though. The crab will still duel you and are usually pragmatic enough to not duel people, and the lion are so honorable that they'll go through with the duel even if they will most likely lose.

>>
>>54799111
Dishonor Crab is the meanest deck out of the core from what I have seen.

Getting people down to 3~ honor is not hard then just drop some levy on them when they don't have any Fate left.

Super easy to push into a lock where they can't skip conflicts and can't play cards during them without losing the game instantly.
>>
>>54799002
Lmao they are actually the weakest. Try playing before you talk.

Now, they might become hella OP within the first two cycles. But not in core.

>>
>>54800717
>The game hasn't even launched and I already hate the Phoenix.

If the Phoenix weren't doing stupid shit and you <didn't> hate them, though, you'd say that the game wasn't being true to its roots.
>>
>>54800761
That's fair. But this is a bad hate. If they were messing around with maho like usual, I would hate them but enjoy it at the same time. This meddling with the Unicorn shugenjas' whole shtick just makes wish the writers had done something else.
>>
>>54800377
A whole truckload of card names were gleaned from that tutorial deck PDF. We now know the name of every non-Scorpion card in the core set. We also have a complete list of card counts and know how many of each card is in the core set. Specifically:

Every single clan affiliated card is 1x.
The following neutrals are 3x:
>Otomo Courtier
>Seppun Guardsman
>Miya Mystic
>Wandering Ronin
Every other neutral card is 2x.

This is now 100% confirmed thanks to the tutorial deck PDF.
>>
>>54801260
>Every other neutral card is 2x.
I should clarify, just for clarity -- every other neutral dynasty and conflict card is 2x. Neutral provinces and role cards are still 1x.
>>
I guess this vote is going to come down to how hated Unicorn decks are. If they are as annoying as LSD used to be way back when, they'll have a hard time in the final decision. Otherwise, I expect people to realize that this sets a dangerous precedent for the Phoenix to shit on the magical legacies of every other clan. In 1E, the meishodo issue was first settled by the similarities it had with Asahina fetish crafting; who is to say the Phoenix won't shit on the Crane using the same arguments if relations between them go sour? Or any other clan, for that matter. For the same reasons, if the Phoenix have their way I expect some brutal preemptive retaliations from clans aside from the Unicorn, so Shiba-leaning Phoenixes might not want to go along with their clan's wishes.
>>
>>54802035
Unicorn is very aggressive but they don't strike me as particularly annoying. Phoenix was way more annoying, but they've made changes since then so maybe they're less PTSD-inducing.
>>
>>54800377
So, the Burning Sands AND the Ivory Kingdoms tried to invade in the past.
The Lion clan is actually good for something in this timeline.
>>
>>54802035
The Phoenix can try, but almost every shugenja tradition diverges at least a bit, and they all *have* to stay true to their own traditions in order to retain their powers. If the Phoenix push it, the imperials will probably move to shut them down. The Phoenix are traditionally the experts on magic, but it's not their official role, which is why they have to compromise to get all the void shuggies, and can't just overrule the Jade champion directly.
>>
>>54803471
>can't just overrule the Jade champion directly.
reread the story, the Jade champion and his magistrates have not existed for centuries, it seems

I've got a feeling that the vote will probably tie in to who becomes the first new Jade champion, since regardless how the vote goes, his magistrates will be needed once more
>>
>>54803656
I'm talking about when the Jade champion does exist.
The office languished, but only after a looooong concerted effort from the Phoenix's elemental council to discredit it.
>>
So you need two cores for complete sets and you're left with a bunch of duplicate garbage noone will need? Android all over again.
>>
>>54803896
Still cheaper to maintain a decent deck for your clan of choice than a CCG. Not ideal but still better
>>
>>54803896
You need three cores for complete sets.

Your third core will get you a playset of 167 different cards. Even if you do not care at all about any other thing in the box that's still more cards than are in a Big Box. In fact, if you look at price per card, the third L5R core set is cheaper per card than the monthly packs and big boxes are ($40 / 167 cards > $15 / 60 cards > $40 / 153 cards).

And frankly you're an idiot if you don't care about getting a second playset of your key neutrals.

No matter how you slice it L5R's core set is a better deal than any other LCG's core set. This isn't Netrunner where your third core gets you 9 cards, of which you care about 1-2. Basically every single card in the box will need a third core to complete a playset of.
>>
>>54803896
3 if you want a complete set for every clan. If you go with 2 you'll have to play the dangerous game of trading.
>>
>>54804042
>If you go with 2 you'll have to play the dangerous game of tradin

kinda hard atm because its not out. Its easy enough to get into, 2 cores will get you roughly 3 decks. About 2 ok ones. 3 cores will allow you 3 solid decks assuming you don't need to splash the same clan (and work with 2x of many neutrals).
>>
>>54812872
Who would wear a dress like that?
>>
>>54819195
It looks like a cheongsam, but slutty. I think you can guess from that
>>
>>54819195
Technically not even the character depicted as wearing it.
Kachiko is a slit, but her outfits were only revealing in that she showed her wrists and usually wore stuff that's body hugging. Showing that much skin would just get you in trouble.
>>
>>54819662
It would get a Crane or a Lion or a non-Agasha Phoenix in trouble. Other clans have different standards of dress. Of course, the Crane try to enforce and heir standard on everyone else at every opportunity, but within a clan's own lands they don't really have sovmuch sway. You might run into trouble at an imperial event, though, even if you are one of those clans who show more skin.
>>
>>54820030
But anon.

All Phoenix are non-Agasha now.
>>
>>54820064
Which makes me sadder than the whole loss of the Mantis. I liked their big leaving the Dragon story and felt a shugenja family in the Phoenix who have a very different mentality than the Isawa was a good touch
>>
>>54820138
The cause of the split was pretty dumb, but I did like the split itself. It introduced an ongoing point of contention between two otherwise largely harmonious clans, brought the Phoenix up to Family par while giving them a novel check on Isawa dominance, and made room for the creation of the Tamori, who are really cool.
>>
>>54820880
But in the new timeline we already have an issue between Phoenix and Dragon regarding the Perfect Land sect, and Phoenix in general seem more meddling and willing to engage into conflict (not necessarily of a military kind, though) than before.
>>

>>54821603

>>
>>54821673
Every clan but the Scorpion I mean
>>
>>54821673
Speaking as someone with access to the entire card list, the only truly meaningful things that are actually missing from non-scorpion clans are the Keeper / Seeker Initiates and the last Crab character. The rest of the neutral cards are thoroughly mediocre ranging on bad, the missing Phoenix characters are solid but not amazing or game-changing, and the missing Dragon event is basically unplayable.

tl;dr, Crab feel weak right now because they're missing a bomb of a character and the Keeper and Seeker Initiates are actually really good. And no, I won't post what any of these things do, it'll all be public knowledge in a couple of days anyways ya'll can wait.
>>

They're a bunch of refined sensationalists, in that they're educated and enjoy the finer things in life but also are philosophically inclined to try and experience everything.

So they also get blackout drunk and pick fights to experience the ecstasy of the kill and other shit. They have three prosperous coastal villages taken from the Crane and basically antagonize the shit out of them and sell their swords as mercenaries for sweet dosh, like a land locked Mantis.

>The culture of the Shark Clan forsakes honor and embraces pleasure as a way of life. This hedonism is rooted in Jirozame’s own attitude, his resolution to enjoy all of life’s pleasures before his death. This includes the usual things enjoyed by many samurai, such as fine food and beverages, beautiful displays of art, and entertaining pastimes such as games and hunting. But it also extends to darker things such as recreational drugs, severe intoxication, and extra-marital relationships. While others in Rokugan may secretly share the Shark Clan’s lack of virtue, they conceal their shameful acts from the public eye. A Shark samurai, however, will easily discuss his visit to a nearby brothel, boast of his affair with another man’s wife, or drink himself into unconsciousness, all of this in front of other samurai. Surprisingly, this does not mean the Shark are verbally rude or uncultured. In fact, most of them come across as surprisingly well-educated and versed in many scholarly topics. (Jirozame himself considered pleasures of the mind equally important to pleasures of the body.)

Nihilistic hedonists, basically.
>>
>>54824967
Imperial Archives was published without schools. However the author of the MC segment wrote schools for them that were just cut for wordcount and he released them on the old AEG forums. They are, as he pointed out, not playtested but the basic ideas of what he was going for is in them.

The Shark one is fine, but I think some of the shugenja ones are really underpowered and the Raven Clan I'm iffy on. I'll share the schools PDF, but not Imperial Archives since it has my name all over it in the watermarks.
>>
>>54824996
And the most likely scenario for their ultimate destruction is that either Jirozame's half-brother or his nephew (IE, one or two emperors down from the one that gave him the clan to begin with) gets sick of the Shark's shit and revokes their status, allowing the Daidoji (Or any clan with a grudge, which could include the Crab, Scorpion, or Lion) to go stomp their shit in.

The Mantis don't randomly go into nearby villages (That they don't own, the Shark do avoid their own towns) and rampage around and steal and kill whatever and whoever they want. Their piracy is mostly deniable, while the Shark are completely open in being cross-border bandits.

You mock him, but a dude covered in blood is coming at you with a swords like that would probably be terrifying
>>
>>54825298

I always imagined the Shark Clan as samurai Carcharodons. Strangely grayish skin, teeth filed to look like shark fangs, weird red tattoos, serrated blades and heavy use of axes, fighting style focusing on causing maximum terror and wanton slaughter, cannibalism, and an odd tendency to disappear from the Empire only to return centuries later to wreak havoc on the enemies of the Emperor.

Or failing that, centipede for an actually loyal clan
>>
>>54825221
I figure that disguise them selves in such a way that most people know it's them, but they have no proof to convict them. There like the mafia during the prohibition, they know they're criminals but they can't prove it.
>>
>>54825966
Officially, everyone knows who they are and could prove it, but the Imperials and the Crane both strongly defend them, because the Crane are pretty much paid off to not destroy them every time a pack of Shark samurai in full colors rolls through a town and either depopulate it or debooze it. Or both.

BREAKING NEWS

The Scorpion story was snuck out, the link in the Unicorn article for their story has been replaced

Kachiko is a bitch and I hope the Scorpion's first story decision involves removing her in some way. I absolutely will not tolerate another Scorpion Coup storyline
>>
>>54827201
It's strange to see Shoju actually fighting.

Things to note:
- Yogo Junzo still exists.
- Kachiko intends to neutralize Hotaru somehow, actual feelings regarding her are still a mystery.
- The Scorpion actually offered the Crab men and materiel, but backed off because Kisada demanded too much control.
- Implications of Shoju wanting the throne, though he's nowhere near sure enough of his position to state it either publicly or 'privately.'

The Scorps seem to be more in a wait and see mode rather than having their fingers in all pies this time.
>>
>>54827417
Kachiko wants the throne. Shoju wants to be ninjas.
>>
>>54826443

My Shinjo battle maiden became the 'mother' of a gaggle of plucky orphan kids that decided to follow us from the various locales that we visited over the course of our travels with the party's reasoning being that if I could care for my Utaku warhorse, I could care for children. The Matsu beastmaster was also roped in using the same logic. We are now at the point in the campaign where all of the other party members are married with children of their own.
>>
>>54827417
Shoju never wanted the Throne for its own sake. He believed he was preventing the return of Fu Leng by slaughtering the Hantei. Unfortunately 39 got away and Toturi's geisha shared the poison instead of giving Toturi the full dose.

>>

old lore it was the male version of Hotaru, but since they turned the Crane champ into a lady that's impossible. so who knows?
>>
>>54827599

I don't seem to recall if Hotaru has any children.
>>
>>54827417
Shoju doesn't seem to trust his wife at all.

He set up the meeting in a semi-public location with posted guards rather than a private location such as the bath.

The jirozame bushi has some mis-matched skills. It has courtier and etiquette, despite being (from my reading) essentially legitimized bandits and controlling a few small villages. Now I have not checked all of the books I have, but only one other school has these two skills, the bayushi bushi, and they are described as political tools of their superiors. They also have any one weapon, but no chance to take another weapon skill, in fact they can take another high skill (which makes them seem even more like a courtier, rather than a bushi). Why is this?
>>
>>54828006
They're erudite and cultured legitimized bandits.
>>
>>54827969
In the old fluff, Shoju was the one other man aside from Hoturi that Kachiko gave a shit about. Who knows.
>>
>>54828006
The Jirozame are known for being cultured, but also crazy bloodthirsty. Their "normal" weapon is the nodachi, which uses the same skill as katana.

Also, your school skills are not the sum total of what your dojo can teach you, just the absolute core curriculum which is why you can have (almost) any skill and explain it away as your sensei taught it. If one wanted to use polearms, they can use some of their starting XP for that and just say that it was taught by their sensei.
>>
>>54828006
The Bayushi Bushi are courtier-lite first, soldiers second.
Most other bushi are soldiers, guards/yojimbo, scouts, or duelists before anything else.
The Jirozame bushi are just... Hedonists. They don't have a major role as a school, because their clan's security is handled by the Emperor himself and the Crane Clan through Imperial bribery. They don't need to be soldiers or guards or watchmen or anything other than thrill-seeking nihilists.
>>
I haven't played this game in years but weren't the honor win/loss conditions different in the old CCG? LCG is 25 honor for win and instant loss at 0 honor.
>>
>>54828592
Old condition was weird, like you win at 40 honor and lost at -20 or something. I kind of prefer this being moderately simplified rather than a weird split that isn't even
>>
>>54828635

That sounds more to what I remember, I distinctly remember Scorpion clans playing games at negative honor values at times.
>>
>>54827500

Looks like it'll be omiai time if the party goes to winter court.
>>
>>54827201
I'm really liking these jewelled mons that have been released with each story. They're definitely too complex to make standard heraldry, but as art pieces they're pretty sweet, and they could easily be simplified and stylised into modern versions of the sometimes very janky original art. I'd love to see Family mons done in this style.

What?
>>
>>54829429

I know the Kakita is drooling to give the Matsu beastmaster and the Shinjo battle maiden makeovers. "Making them properly presentable to the Son of Heaven, to their estimable lords, and to their honored ancestors."
>>
So, I'm making a kakita duelist who's supposed to be a prodigy of dueling and painting, which he views as similar. What advantages should I take to buff up both? Also, is the prodigy advantage worth it?
>>
>>54831975
Prodigy is not worth it mechanically, but it does have some strong fluff implications. Talk to your GM.

There is a kata in the Book of Fire called "The Empire Rests On Its Edge", where you choose a High skill that gives you bonuses from it when the kata is active. It does make the skill more expensive to buy going forward though. There's also the Sage of Sword and Fan from, well, Sword and Fan, although that links Battle and Courtier in such a way that they basically become one skill.
>>
>>54821791
Seconding this guy's opinion that the Initiates are quite good.
>>
>>54832131
>Prodigy is not worth it mechanically
It's the equivalent of one rank in seven skills. (six for some schools)

That's not much when you're looking at skill rank 2 or your selection of school skills aren't all that, but when you have a good school and you've raised the skills a few ranks, the equivalent of an extra rank is worth a bit more than you paid for it.
>>
>>54832388
The main problem with Prodigy is more the opportunity cost than the numerical cost; it takes up such a large proportion of your chargen advantage slots that picking it hugely limits what else you can take, which bites especially hard if you want anything that's chargen-only.
>>
>>54827687
Her husband is also a mystery. IIRC, Hoturi's official wife was a fucking Kitsune of all things.
>>
What's the differences between the clans gameplay wise? Some proper information please and not just >Crane: MUH HONOUR

I mean you can do it if you want because I can't stop you but I would appreciate some proper gameplay information.

>>
>>54813851

Oh god, that outfit. I'm sorry Genzoman, you were not that bad.
>>
>>54830065
Its pretty accurate to Rokugan cultural norms in a joking way?
>>
So, how bad is the Missing Limb disadvantage for a character who uses a katana? You can use a katana in one hand, right?
>>
>>54834505
huge disadvantage will never be as good as good 2 armed swordsman
>>
>>54832549
You have to be following that option rule for it to take effect, and even if you are, you have to look at what you're giving up rather than just blanket state 'no prodigy'. You can't suddenly become a child prodigy later on in life, but you *can* become blessed by a fortune or whatever.
>>
>>54834505
Use your katana one handed, and start your duels katana unsheathed.
>>
>>54833227
When I get home I'll get you, fampai. Assuming nobody beats me to it
>>
>>54834575
Like a Dragon? How provincial
>>
>>54832388
the main problem with prodigy is that it doesn't give you skill ranks, it gives you +1k0. as a reference point, +1k0 is ~+2 to a roll. So you're paying 12 XP for ~+2 to seven different rolls. Masteries are the important bits, and generally the reason people raise their skills, because if you want raw numbers, raising your stat is way more effective when you're already invested into a skill.
>>
>>54830008
Wat from is this?
>>
>>54830520

I sincerely hope they are prepared for a tsunami of suitors.
>>
>>54833227
So here's the real, real short of what we know so far:

Crane are a straightforward Political conflict powerhouse, with a focus on honoring characters to upgrade their stats and lots of tricks to prevent enemies playing events or other tricks of their own that would dishonor you. Their military characters are good, including a really useful duelist, but not that many to make a uniquely Crane military deck focus yet

Lion are a straightforward offensive clan with good military and ability to get lots of dudes on the table, plus courtier and shugenja nonsense that helps support that and playing characters from the discard pile.

Dragon are all about putting lots of attachments on your guys on the table to make them solo province breakers and shit, as well as some weird Monk stuff that isn't really well rounded right now I feel. Might take a few monthly cycles for that to come into its own.

Crab have lots of big dudes you can put on the field and defensive choices that let you endure and strike back hard as well as milking sacrifice for buffs.

Unicorn are about being pretty pony princesses, and thus really hard hitting military with lots of techs to bring dudes into conflicts after they're declared to surprise and arouse your opponents who I must assume are horsefuckers.

Oh shit I forgot Phoenix! Phoenix are jank incarnate, with a huge number of powerful effects that only work some of the time and confusing building block pieces to help you set those situations up. I like them a lot but suspect I suck a lot so will be losing a ton.

Scorpion aren't out yet.
>>
>>54834550
Unless you're a Moto.
>>
>>54830008

I did not think it was possible to sum up political correctness in a single image, and yet here we are.
>>
>>54832388
In addition to not getting mastery abilities, you also don't get insight rank for it.
Buying all of your school skills to 2 the normal way only costs 2 xp more, gives you 7 more insight, and puts you that much closer to the mastery abilities of those skills.
It's literally only worth it if you plan to buy at least two of your school skills up past 7, and even then, you're setting up for a loooong term xp purchase, reducing what you can actually get in the present.

Depends entirely on whether your GM lets you use the good poisons or not. The Shosuro Blade makes it much easier to use poisons, since you can coat it with the same motion you use to draw, making it very inconspicuous.
