The 4 classics? Chinese? Something else?

If you say 'le periodic table' you're a fag.

Wizards experimenting using high-energy magic believe fragments of reality are composed of smaller constituent flavors. They have given the known flavors the following names: up, down, side-ways, sex-appeal, and peppermint. A brassiere flavor is theorized but attempts to observe it have resulted in permanent transmutation into underwear.
>>
Air - Earth - Fire - Water is simple and universally understood. I like adding a "good" and a "bad" element to that too, usually Light and Darkness, or sometimes Holy and Unholy. Six is a good number, gives you three axes to work with.

>>54683417
I went with Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Light and Shadow in one setting. Tried to tie in associated qualities so you don't have elementalists just running around throwing chunks of their elements at each other.

You had the obvious opposed pairs - Air and Earth for example, but I also added complementary pairs. Water and Earth both sustain life and can take on many forms, Fire and Light are both radiant elements and Shadow and Wind are both mysterious, somewhat intangible forces.
>>
>>54683417
Metal, noise, blood, fire.
>>
>>54683417
Call me a purist, but I never saw anything wrong with a six element spread, the classic four plus light and darkness.

mostly because there isn't really a classic four. The classic alchemical elements include earth, water, air, fire, but also aether. The chinese have wood, fire, earth, metal, and water; sometimes even void/air like Sun Tzu has in his book.

I like when a breakdown is more

Natural Elements
Magical Elements
Spiritual Elements

Warcraft sort of does it where there are fire/wind/water/earth but all that falls into one category, and studying arcane magic is its own thing and light vs darkness is its own thing.
>>
>>54685478
Came here to say this. I like throwing in Bone as an element as well since I like things coming in 5s.

Also generate other lesser or greater elements based on the 5. Water, for instance, is just lesser blood while combustion is an element combining fire and noise.

Some of them got kinda out there but it's a fun fucking elements system.
>>
>>54686072
I had an idea for something similar:

Spiritual Elements:
>Light
>Darkness
>Harmony
>Chaos

Material Elements:

Ah the most important elements. Anyway, I've been using Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Aether, and Azoth of late. I've also been considering further dividing them into sub-elements based on Stability/Volatility.
>>
>>54686232
Thanks! I've been brainstorming the setting for a while, and want to adapt the magic system to work in a tabletop game, because it encourages spellcasters to be creative and experiment rather than have a list of moves to choose from. Pretty much, you take essences from these elements - either through meditation, chants/prayers/holy words, runes, or some other medium - and string them together. You get one element from each category, and can focus/add more essence to an element to enhance it. The first element determines the "form" of the spell. The second element determines the "function". The third element determines the "flavor". So, for example, Creation-Light-Fire might cast a spell that produces a torch.
>>
I've been using a tier of elements

It starts with Time
then goes to Life+Death
Then Mind+Body+Spirit
Then Fire+Wind+Earth+Water

Major mystical elements: creation, action, nothingness and life/death

Minor mystical elements: light, darkness, thought and symbol

I made up a five element spread years ago in high school, and I've been using it in my stuff ever since.

The five elements are the elements of the dead, and govern all necromancy and undeath.
They are
>Blood, the element of vitality
>Bone, the element of stability
>Blight, the element of adaptability
>Blaze, the element of sanctity
>Brume, the element of finality

I like undead in my games a lot.

>Brain

I made one based off the 4 elements: Air-Fire-Water-Earth.
Each element has 3 subgroups where the magic actually happens. They also represent some additional philosophical and fluff related things, some I've forgotten about.

Lightning - electricity, pairs with Pyro
Air - wind, flight, pairs with Hydro
Thunder - sound, explosions, pairs with Geo

Fire - fire, pairs with Aero
Bio - acids, radiation, chemicals, pairs with Hydro
Arid - erosion, friction, time, pairs with Geo

Steam - clouds, vapor, pairs with Aero
Water - water, pairs with Pyro
Ice - ice, pairs with Geo

Earth - ground, rock, pairs with Aero
Metal - construction, industry, pairs with Pyro
Plant - growth, pairs with Hydro

Mine sounds a bit like yours, only the four primary elements have secondary states and negative states I their subgroup which is kind of Planescape like. Then each element has an affiliation.

So you have

>Hydromancy
Primary state: Water
Secondary state: Ice
Negative state: Acid
Affliation: Law

>Aeromancy
Primary state: Air
Secondary state: Cloud (Open to a better idea on this one since clouds are water, maybe force?)
Negative state: Vacuum
Affiliation: Chaos

>Geomancy
Primary state: Earth
Secondary state: Biology/Nature/Life
Negative state: Dust
Affiliation: Law

>Pyromancy
Primary state: Fire
Secondary state: Lightning
Negative state: Ash
Affiliation: Chaos

But see then you have a fifth element, Astromancy, or Aether basically, which is beyond secondary state or affiliation. It's basically God mode.

I'd ditch Creation and Destruction. They're actions, not things, and their inclusion implies you need to have mastery over that element to create/destroy anything e.g. casting a fireball would need more than Fire, it seems like it'd need Creation as well since you're literally creating fire.

Maybe replace them with something like Fate/Chance/Luck? Or Animation/Life/Essence? Emotion/Thought?
>>
>>54691581
>Water
>Law
Bruh switch Water and Air's affiliations (unless you have an in-setting reason for them being like that).

Pure kinetic force can work as a secondary state, but it seems like there's a power gap between Earth and the other four. One makes life itself and the rest are just Element2.0. Either make the secondary states all extreme, or downgrade Earth's to maybe metal or crystal. If you go with the former, Air has been classically linked to intelligence and intellect in Western mysticism and air/breath is linked to life and soul in Asian mysticism. Fire could be emotion/passion. Water might be beauty, personal links, or relationships.

>>
>>54692542
There's no real setting reason for it, I was just going along the route that particles are more agitated and random in gases than liquids so air is more chaotic. Then you have the negative states which ae kind of the opposite, so whilst water is lawful, acid is chaotic; same with air and vacuum.

The secondary states are meant to be more of an element 2.0, so maybe metal or wood would be better. You'd have to be a fucking good biomancer to make life itself though, it's mostly triggering growth and defense mechanisms in plants and stuff.

Then maybe I can link the elements to mind, body, emotion and soul as you suggested, since I haven't really touched mind/psychic stuff yet.

Oh gawd.

Puppies, Candies, Explosion, and Awesomeness. Those are the four elements of my current campaign.

Puppies are hard-working and loyal. Puppy magic can enforce laws, be used to find the truth or even to charm someone. Harnessing primal puppy magic can transform you into bestial abominations of the wilderness.

Candy magic is incredibly dangerous. It is the magic of cancerous development, of life taken to the extreme, and it has a tendency to overtake everything if left alone. It is also the magic of food and nutrition.

Explosion magic is the magic of the void, of entropy, the Last Word. It can rarely be used constructively, though it can also negate other enchantment or teleport people by negating space.

Awesomeness makes thing look cooler. It can be used to boost someone charisma or to trap objects into pillars of ice.

>>
There are four known elemental planes: earth, air, water, fire; and an often debated theorized fifth which has not yet been discovered: void. All known substances and reactions can be explained by mixing the various elemental energies in various concentrations. The planes are separate and distinct and physical mean cannot move you from one plane into another, yet the planes meet and touch on one another on a level above the physical. These junctions explain how mages can travel between the planes and how the planes can have areas that support human life. For example, there is air on the plane of water because the plane of air touches the plane of water and can occupy the spaces not filled with water (many theorize that these empty spaces are proof of the existence of the void plane and it's interaction on the plane of water). Each plane is filled primarily with it's associated element, but relatively small amounts of the other three (or four if you're so inclined) planes can be found scattered around, seemingly at random.

The void plane is where our universe is situated: a large empty expanse with a relatively small amount of earth, air, water, and fire scattered about, seemingly at random.

I'm actually thinking of incorperating the lantern corps spectrum into a game in place of an element spread. different spells requiring different emotional states to properly cast, with one's personality predisposing them to certain colors rather than others.
for those uninformed the lantern corps spectrum comprises:
rage
averice
fear
will
hope
compassion
and love

there's also life and death, but I'm on the fence about those.

Earth, Fire, Air, Water and sometimes Love is always good. Works just fine for both 5th Element and Captain Planet.

Nature (Pagan), Dark (Infernal), and Holy magic is a good triangle, always liked that one

Finally, if magic is exclusively evil and dark, then the best way to spread it out is Corruption, Destruction, Greed, and Deceit

If it's plot-relevant in some manner (e.g. Avatar), I prefer the default four, with maybe light/darkness, life/death, or sun/moon or something added in if need be. However, no 'normal' or 'martial' or 'fist' or something along those lines.

If it's not plot-relevant: the periodic system for modern-ish settings, and whatever superstition is most convenient to bullshit around when it comes up for earlier settings. I don't decide it when worldbuilding.

Is anyone interested in me explaining a bit more of this? I found some of my old notes on it and there's some fun stuff in there.

Alright, so the five elements are representative of the five gods who I wrote about >>54629113 here. Originally, it was also designed around being factions for a wargame/4x where Humans were the primary resource.

>Blood
Blood is the element of Vitality, the source that keeps the undead functioning and fresh. It is instrumental in creating the more active and living of the undead, like Vampires and Ghouls, but is impermanent. Like the victory the Red God imparted, it is a fleeting thing, and while the living produce it, the dead do not. Blood in its essence also refers to the raw meat and flesh of an undead, especially in proper necropolises, where "blood" can be used as a slang for any fresh meat to be used or eaten, ala blood sausage in a way. When used in magic, Blood is best suited to creating bloodthirst and temporary increases in power, speed, and hunger.
>Bone
Bone is the element of stability, and is the foundation of most necromancy, referring to both the actual skeleton of a creature and the fundamental animating spells that allow the necromancer to animate it. Bone is the essence of Defeat the White God bestowed in that it is lasting, and often all that remains of a creation; it does not often win the fight, but it remains after its foe has long since perished, ready to rise again. Bone-magic is fortifying in nature, often fixing other spells in place or rendering the enspelled with the steadiness to outlast their foes.
>Blight
Blight is the element of adaptability, and refers to the biles, humors, embalming fluids, and actual diseases that riddle the dead. It Blight that allows an undead to learn beyond simple programming, and to persist in efforts after injury and time. In some cases, Blight-heavy creations can even change shape and form, or regenerate. Blight-magic is used often in healing, forcing the body to adapt to survive its wounds, but also has horrific uses in combat, especially in the Cancer-Mages of the Firefly Coast.

>Blaze
Blaze is the element of sanctity, and is the blue light of the soul that grants the undead more than simple automation. Responsible for the more ephemeral undead, like Ghosts and the rare Liches, Blaze is the element that allows the storing of skills and knowledge in an undead, as well as personality. It is the element of Hope, which allows the undead to dream of futures beyond servitude, and to create and think and be sentient as any other. In combat, Blaze is used often to strengthen the resolve of others, or call forth fleeting phantoms from the residual memories surrounding the caster.
>Brume
Brume, the element of finality, represents the ash of the kiln and sand of the hourglass in one. It is where no undead can return from, and is used by necromancers to end creations, or in the rare and powerful case, render them inviolable. It is the element of Fate, ordaining the end of things and the passage of time, and what few undead exist using it are often ancient, strange things bound by indefatigable purpose. In combat, Brume is used to reduce undead the ash and unusable dust, cancel spells and enchantments, and in rare cases of mastery, manipulate the skeins of fate and time.

Also keep in mind, this whole setting is basically in the background of a wild west deadlands-meets-K6BD style adventure, so its pretty weird. I like it.

You know what I really want to see? A return to the Delta Species era, where pokemon took on either secondary types (usually Steel) or had types different from what they normally were (such as a psychic-type Cyndaquil), with the usual weakness/resistances.

Dragons are basically multicolor cards from MtG so that's nice, but the TCG can do things the games and show can't and should absolutely be revelling in it.

Recently, I've been trying to work out a system with four spheres and three focuses each. Right now I've got it as

>Fire, Lightning, Lava
>Water, Ice, Steam
>Earth, Metal, Wood
>Air, Light, Shadow

I was trying to add in variations on the four basics, and then tried to group them based on similar themes. Fire and Water are a bit samey compared to Earth, and Air only really got Light and Shadow because I couldn't come up with anything else that would fit. I guess it works as a sort of intangible theme.

I'd like to have a name for each trio, but I can't think of anything catchy enough. I considered using the cardinal directions, but that seems kind of boring. Any thoughts?

Classic but synergies is where it's at, so
F+W is steam
W+E is plant
W+A is ice
A+E is sand
F+E is metal
F+A is combustion but I've been looking for somethng better for a while now that sums up these two elements nature.

I never finished it but I halfway made a setting/engine for undead adventures, super edgy and campy silliness. The big "elements" of the world were Bones, Nerves, Blood, Brains, Guts and Heart, and they were also supposed to be the ability scores (replacing the Classic 6). Different undead cultures venerated and philosophized about different bodily elements.
