Except below the adorable, technicolor surface secretly its a noir investigative system and you have to figure out why Marina looks like she's being forced to do the talkshow and how people keep managing to just walk away with a 70 foot electric eel.
>>
>>54577958
I think the inklings are a bit too humanoid. It's neat that they're blobs of living paint that can change between human and squid forms, but why do they have human skin tones? It would be nice if they kept their ink color in human form.

Well, if we're going to be faithful to the source material, it should be a system that allows for Turf Wars. Since a major part of them is positioning and mobility, it should be a system whose movement rules aren't too abstract, but at the same time not too complex, so the combat flows smoothly. A little abstraction is fine, such as giving each room a "color meter" that acts as a health bar and measures how much of it is in each team's color.
>>
>>54579038
I mean, if it's run in any system that has tiles you can just do whatever it is to decide who gets a tile and then count tiles to see who wins

It depends. Do you want it to be a combat focused board game centered on the Turf Wars, or do you want a deep character focused roleplaying game?

Making anything apart from a wargame would require a lot of homebrew. What's life like for a non-combat sqkid? Would their be none combat classes? Should other species be playable, like Prawns and Jellyfish? What's the conflict, apart from Turf Wars and looking fresh?

I'd love to play in a Splatoon RPG. I'd recommend Legends of the Wulin. Use Shaping Marvels to paint the ground. Refluff the weapon types to be different types of paint guns. Write loresheets for different Inkling youth gangs, and have the game focus on gang turf warfare.

>they're not even mexican halfbreeds

>>
>>54590788
Something faster would probably be better. In LotW, characters are difficult to take out and damage is detailed, while Splatoon is faster and simpler. Stealing the way Shaping works would be a good idea, but another system's combat would be a better base. Not sure which yet, though.
>>
>>54590863
Man, what was the deal with that whole thing?
>>
>>54590865

Yeah, you're right about that. I wasn't thinking about translating Splatoon's fast respawns and general frenecticness to tabletop, as I always saw that as purely gameplay-motivated and not a necessary part of the feel of the setting. Even so, LotW would definitely need some adjustments to work for the general feel of Splatoon. I like the system enough that I'd hack it to make it work, while other GMs might be better off porting one or two concepts over to their system of choice.
>>
>>54589923

So, when you get splatted in Salmon you appear as a life preserver floating along until you get revived. In Turf War you respawn at a cauldron. What happens if you get Splatted on the street? What if an Octoling terrorist throws a bucket of ink on you while you're doing your taxes?

I feel like the system needs tangible elements.

Like head down to an arts and crafts store and buy a bunch of shitty kids supplies like a big roll of paper, some cardboard, some plastic brushes, some sponges, and a lot of cheap, fast drying paint. Set it up outside, on newspaper, or on a tarp.

- Indestructible terrain is cardboard glued to the paper
- Destructible terrain is drawn in pencil beforehand or made of paper cutouts (hence paint covers and "destroys" it)
- Shoot by drawing a line with a paintbrush
- Explosions like rockets or grenades are done with circular sponges
- Maybe have a physical component like throwing grenade sponges onto the board

I was about to suggest something like this, too.

This way, the battlefield will be more important than what has been suggested so far (mainly each room having an abstract paint level).

However it would also be more expensive.
Alternatively, you can do it on a screen. Like an ipad or something.

>This way, the battlefield will be more important than what has been suggested so far (mainly each room having an abstract paint level).
well, the alternative to that (while staying within traditional mechanics) is to have the spaces on the map be double sided tokens so each space can be flipped. But that would be super fiddly, so it's either go abstract or get arty.

I like the artsy round desu, but it'd be hard. The problem is that paint doesn't work like splatoon ink.

>>
I'd be interested in something like this so much.
I just recently stood in octo canyon and thought "how cool would an rpg be where you are squidkid, on an investigation or something. Like, one campaign idea would be new agents to the squid beak splatoon, investigating happenings in one of the octarian cities.
Or have something happen in their neighbourhood and the players looking into it.
On the whole turf war inkfest, a skirmish game would be best.

>>
>>54602724

>>
>>54602584
My first thought for it would be to have a small map, with each space being somehow inkable. Weapons both ink ground and damage opposing squids. Combat would have to be relatively simple as it'd be a great property to make a kid's first skirmish minis game, though the maps would have to be designed in a way to make the game still interesting for more serious players.

I imagine the core box would have 1 or 2 double sided maps and 2 sets of the basic weapons (i.e. splattershot, roller, splat charger, dualies, blaster, splatling gun & Slosher) Though a team would be only 4 inklings and ideally no points values on units.
>>
>>54602799
Well, that sounds interesting
>>
>>54602724
It's... It's pretty much SQUIDtastrophe. The lore is frighteningly similar to CATastrophe.

Also, as terrible as a Mechanic as it was, ink sounds like it might be well-represented by 4e's "To-hit Aura" mechanic.
>>
Not gonna lie, I took up the idea of adapting the inklings to 3.5 a couple of months ago when I found out about Splatoon 2. It was mostly fueled out of boredom and a conversation I had with my friends that was basically: "what would happen if we took X and transported it to a generic fantasy world out of nowhere with no forewarning. How would X adapt and what sort of subraces would be created/evolve?" I started really thinking about it and decided to draw out a skeleton for inklings, and a few playable subraces based off of art fundamentals I learned in high school art, music styles, and elemental magics. Then I realized how fucking insane these beings are, especially in a dungeon crawl when handled by a capable and creative player, so I created an NPC subrace that is OP as fuck from a ranged point of view to be the absolute foil for PC races as a non-magically invisible Not!KGB snipe-squids.

Races in next post.
>>
>>54604570
3.5 would be the absolute last system I'd use for a splatoon game.
VeloCITY would be waaay better
>>
Cont.

Races include:
>Inklings (exactly as you'd expect, ink can only harm other inklings, inkling subraces, and inklish creatures, dissolve in water; normal colouration for inklings)

>Deep Inklings (the Drow of the inkling subraces, they're not really hated just... avoided and super hardcore/brutal. I shamelessly ripped off the idea of the Drow House Feats for these guys and twisted them to forms of music; colouration is always reminiscent of metal concerts, raves, goth clubs, etc.)

>Terrous Inklings (Inklings that spent generations near portals/cracks into the Elemental Plane of Earth and over time became far more weak to water and gained the ability to fire their ink as hardened, razor sharp crystals; earth tones are the normal colouration)

>Aqueous Inklings (the exact opposite of the terrous, dissolves in air instead of water and can easily kill other inklings because their ink is water-based which causes inklings in squid-form to dissolve; ocean tones are extremely common but some have bioluminescent ink)

>Faded Inklings (the NPC race, gets bonuses to ranged attack rolls and damage using ranged weapons that scales with HD, can use their ink to go invisible; pale and faded colours are usual colouration)

>Harmonious Inklings (the bardic subrace, gets bonuses to bardic abilities and verbal spells, can use their ink within 15 feet to use their bardic music as a free action, colouration is always two-toned and in colour that compliment each other well)

>Loud Inklings (the opposite of the harmonious, get bonuses to sonic spells and can cause their ink to explode in a cacophony of sound to deal sonic damage; two-toned colouration that clashes in horrible ways)

>Vibrant Inklings (light-based inklings that can cause their ink to glow and get caster level boosts on light spells; colourations are light and bright in nature)

I also created a few series of feats (colour switching, squid stuff, etc.) and I believe two racial classes to go along with this.
>>
>>54604615
Oh, I'm well aware of that. The problem is that everyone I game with, save like one other, only has knowledge of 3.5 and 4e and don't really wanna learn anything new. So I just wrote what I figured would be fun for them to play/test out for me.

>>
>>54604632
Wasn't able to slip this in the last post detailing it, but a few of the magic items the came out of this was "Elemental Ink Potions". If an inkling of a certain colour would drink a potion of that colour, a number of squares of ink would deal elemental damage instead of the usual damage. Two-toned inklings could use both colours, but at half-strength for each. There was a feat to brew these potions, and another feat to be able to use the elemental ink without drinking a potion, but you had to give up an arcane spell and would convert twice the spell's level in squares to that damage type. You needed the spells-weird ink feat to be able to brew them in the first place, but you didn't need the feat to be able to use the potions.

You could always lore that shit. We know that Inkling's respawn differently in different situations (reappear at a kettle in Turf Wars, float along in a life preserver until revived in Salmon Run), so you could argue that the quick deaths and quick respawns are a product of advanced Turf War technology.

Maybe in unofficial combat situations Inklings use something that makes them hardier, but slows recovery. It could be life vests or something like that.

I would set it outside of Inkopolis, to allow for more freedom in fluff and scope.

>While Inkopolis has one giant zapfish, Chromocity has a dozen medium fish and hundreds of small

I guess octarians are part of inkling society?
In my eyes its like there are octarians (especially octolings) living alongside inklings and the once you fight are those who are and were opposed to live with the inklings and wage a secret war against inkling kind.
Appearently the squidsisters performed with octavio with inklings and octarians in the crowd so I guess it makes sense

Other way around. To any octopode not in the know it was the most awesome and possibly impromptu concert EVER.

And since most Inklings don't care who you are as long as you're fresh, nobody probably knew or thought to correct that idea.

As others have mentioned, Inklings have been attempted in both my homebrew systems: VeloCITY and Super Mario RPG. It's only in the concept stage still in VeloCTY, but in SMRPG, it's much more concrete and hashed out, since someone is already playing an inkling in a campaign.

>>54508689 (VeloCITY)
>>54616896 (SMRPG)

I for one welcome our new squid overlords.
>>
>>54618338
What about our kid overlords?
>>
>>54618377
those aren't overlords yet.

You know the saying

Old squids send young squids to war.
>>
>>54602799
Thinking on this, what would anons think of using a deck of cards to resolve combat. The deck has cards that are either a miss or a splat. You draw a number of cards equal to the weapon's power, and if you draw any splats, the target has to respawn (sent back to spawn, maybe also missing a turn).
>>
>>54617299
I still would want to adapt VeloCITY into a new game, hell, maybe even do something entirely different!
Like, VeloCITY hs a great focus on movement and movement is key in splatoon, but it isn't everything. Sincethe main form of movement for inklings other than running is swimming in ink, it would need alot mpre than just playable inklings.
Its like saying "splatoon is just like jet set radio, so why play splatoon?"
It just isn't. Hence, splatoon should have its own thing
>>
>>54619489
That would be a fun way to make combat more abstract. What about swimming in ink though?
>>
>>54577958
So long as i get to go on genocidal rages with my comrades, im down.
>>
>>54602584
>>54602799
>>54619489
If this would become a miniature wargame of sorts, I still see potential for a sort of rpg addon for it.
Like, a modified ruleset where each player controls their own inkling with the stats and gear they got in character creation or play. Outside of combat, the rules are more abstract and when in combat, it uses the skirmish rules slightly modified that would be more like salmon run... unless your campaign actually includes turf wars.
It would make a cool hybrid
>>
>>54620035
The simple way to represent that would be to base the MP cost of the tile on the ink in it.
Your Ink = 1 MP
No Ink = 2 MP
Foe's Ink = 3MP.
Rollers would ink any space they entered and moving never costs them more than 2MP.

If you wanted to represent making them harder to hit, then either give a penalty to power or require 2 splats to kill a squid taking the "hide" action. then all squids can hide in their own ink rather than attack.
>>
I know Dnd 4e had it's share of problems. But it had a lot of the tactical combat options and movement options that would reflective turf war pretty well. But it is a relatively clunky system. Not the sub systerm dog pile that was 3.5 but hardly quick and easy

Apparently strike! got a lot of fairly simple rule set well retaining a decent tactical combat system. But that could be a dirty lie for all I know.

Splatoon 2 Sunken scrolls showed alot what happened in the 2 years inbetween Splatoon 1 and 2, as well as give further insight into octarian and inkling technology/biology.
