How do you people deal with mind control in your games?

Is it bad to have a mechanic where a PC can be mind-controlled by an opponent or is it okay if the player is given a shot at resisting it?

I asked this in 5eg the other day. I don't think a PC should be able to be charmed into anything unreasonable like suicide but if the players like roleplay, it makes for some interesting opportunities.

I would draw the line at interparty charming though. Players should not be able to charm other players. It's silly and unfair, especially with caster supremacy already a thing, it just widens the game.

This pretty much.
I only use mind control against some players I know well, and even then I aways talk with them to know if its okay.
They can also choose to make (and pass automatically) the save vs mind control at any time.
Works on my table. Might or might not work at yours

It shouldn't be save or die (ie suicide). Taking away player agency is a very big deal, so you have to watch resistability and duration very closely so they aren't just jerking off angrily in the corner while their PC fucks up the party.

Like most DM tools, it's very much a matter of how you use it to advance rather than fuck up the story and the fun of the game.

One of my favorite MC approaches is to have the NPC give specific instructions to the PC, leaving the PC to interpret them however they wish. Just the way an NPC might do the same to weasel out from a PC's mind control demands. Then depending on the IQ of the NPC using the power, I might give the PC more or fewer loopholes to exploit.

Giving a player a chance to be creative in telling the DM to go fuck himself is an old DM trick to increase the fun level and the perceived fairness of the game. Just so long as you're not too obvious about it.

If the players have access to it, then the GM should be able to have access to it.

I shouldn't have to pull my punches, as my players know what they're in for from session 0.

I think it's okay if the player has a shot of resisting it or interpreting their orders like >>54483593 suggested. Some parts might be unavoidable, but other parts might be something they can wriggle around. Maybe they can even break free but still pretend to be controlled, like how if someone were to try and convince your character of something, even if they see through the lie they could theoretically keep going with the lie until they need to reveal their true colors.

Of course I don't think I should make use of it because mind control would be my magical realm.

Don't think of it as railroading. Think of it as a tactical and roleplaying challenge. Which also let's you get in some guilt-free hits on that one guy. (You know the one.)

It depends on the situation.

If you are straight up playing an ERP game, there'll probably be some initial reluctance because 'eeek it's so dirty!' but it's part of the point. But I imagine that in most games where it's just treated as another effect while for you it's a kink, it is going to make you feel nervous and awkward and wondering how much other players aren't noticing, or if you're trying to downplay and resist it too much - or, if the party and/or GM knows that you're into it, what the hell are they trying to pull using it in a social setting? It'd be like if the GM looked you straight in the eye and went 'a big, fat cock thrusts into your mouth. What do you do?' and expects you to totally accept it because you like it when it's porn, right?

It goes the other way, too. You put in limitations knowing that someday the PCs might be affected, and so in turn they have to live with those limitations as they try to control NPCs.

Haven't used it yet but have thought of two options. Option 1: Take control of the character temporarily. Option 2: Let the player keep control but if they are going against the control have increasingly difficult willpower checks.

For the most part I think players should usually have a chance, no matter how slim, of resisting mind-control.

I myself dig this. Had my 5e barbarian get charmed by an iron shadow and attack the party in a rage. Due to an earlier altercation with a party member (whom I had punched for doing a terrible job scouting the area earlier leading to me getting incapacitated and another PC's death) the next day began with me awakening from being beat down and having to explain myself. That was a great, if challenging, session and I feel it made me a better player.

If your players are cool, give the player their mind-controlled goal and ask him to play out his character as well as he can trying to fulfill it. Let them run with it and see how it goes.

One time while playing a wizard I got mind controlled by a serpent-folk and was ordered to attack our party's monk, who had the serpent-folk grappled. Due to a wording issue I ended up able to avoid easily killing our monk by fingering his ass with mage hand instead. The serpent-folk wizard said "get him off" so that's what I did. Our GM and party fighter thought it was hilarious, the monk not so much.
