It should be pretty obvious that the average paladin is better than the average warrior. If you're talking about D&D (and what else?) then your PC fighter is not an average warrior but represents the very best of warriorkind. A paladin who is both the best warrior and also the mightest paladin rolled into one would be represented by multiclassing paladin/fighter.

Hell there's even a Paladin PrC, so you don't even need the base class, just take 5 fighter- 5 Paladin PrC or 10 fighter, 10 paladin and you're set.

But for functionality based in lore, effectively a Paladin is a fighter who follows a strict code that adheres to the values their deity represents that is restrictive and linked to their connection to the faith through that deities following. They're basically sponsored divine warriors that advertise the faith, in practice.

Because of that, you won't find many of them as it is an undertaking becoming a man of the cloth and a man of the sword, forsaking personal gain and the like.

Unless the deity is a deity of wealth, in which case CAPTALISM HO HERETICS. or if you're a *Sponsored by Pelor/Zarus Grey Knight or a Lloth issued Paladin of Slaughter or Bane issued Paladin of Tyranny.

Objective D&D Alligment took a bit of a spin in 3.5 with Deities making reflex saves against alignment shifts and that entire abyssal layer which allows for you to be ammoral in a world of Objective alignment because it was once part of the upper planes.

Paladin's of tyranny make a wee bit of sense because Bane is the Violence that comes before the peace, the guy did technically live in an age equivalent to the Dark ages full of all sorts of unsavoury assholes and people of such low-quality that it is comparable to today's awful standards, even if his followers overdo it, and sometimes when it comes down to it, you could be a nice and kind ruler but your people take you for granted everytime, and become objectively evil, whores and basically the worst scum imaginable to the point where all common decency and goodness are but void in their everyday lives out of their own avarice and greed and that's where Bane steps in to violently beat the fucking scum out of the heart of a kingdom until it ascribes to rule of order.

Not necessarily, in Le Morte d'Arthur, Lancelot was a kickass 'earthly' knight, but the moment he joined the quest for the holy grail he became shit because he was an 'heavenly' knight at that point. Basically, a paladin can be better than a regular fighter, but he also has to make his deity happy. If he pisses off his deity he'll become shit.

Technically, Paladins were supposed to be a prestige class of Fighters, but you had some faggots that wanted to DEUS VULT from level 1, so it became a regular class so that the moralfags, edgelords, and christfags could all get their rocks off while dragging the rest of the party down by not being full casters.

It's not really a secret that paladins are just an upgrade from warriors, usually because they have access to healing and protection magic. But they are normally balanced out by having to keep a lawful good (or at least some 'good') alignment.

In 2e/original Paladins, paladins straight were better, you needed a godly stat array to play one, and the DM guide suggested not letting players play one at all.

This is why i've always been a fan of changing the name but keeping the concept, and calling them something else.

Call them Exemplar (so you can even have your faggy non-religious paladins of concepts)

Paladins should be strictly better than fighters and priests but should either not be allowed in lvls 1-5 or be peasant-tier before gaining their god's favour.

Consequentially fighters can transition to champions, who really are better in combat than paladins, and priests can transition to clerics who are better with spells. A way to make Paladins unique would be to have them give passive bonuses to the entire team, i.e. Auras.
