Tyranids are portrayed exactly how they're supposed to be portrayed right up to the point where their enemies pull some kind of plot device and win even though by all accounts the planet they were fighting on was pretty much a lost cause. Just look at the travesty that is the devastation of Baal. The tyranids did exactly what they were supposed to until a warp storm deleted their whole fleet, and as soon as it cleared Guilliman himself appeared with the crusade to crush the disorganized tyranids. And then to add a third plot device, the Tyranids on the other moon get BTFO by the legions of Khorne and kbandtha.

To be fair to the iron warriors in that story, the Tyranids are pretty much the only force that could launch a large scale subterranean assault and circumnavigate most of their defenses easily. Still, we've seen much lesser forces than a fortress world described as the best outside of perturabos own and garrisoned by a whole grand company of iron warriors plus innumerable daemon engines and cultists/traitor guard fight off the tyranids. Or at least hold out way longer than a week. I mean, how the fuck do you lose 600 defilers in a couple of hours?

The problem is, Russ got a DIRECT order from The Emperor, and even had Valdor appointed to him to help him carry this out. Then comes Horus and completely flips the order on it's head. It's not like The Emperor is an uber-powerful psyker who could personally contact Leman regarding this or anything...
Also, the fact that Valdor was suspicious of Horus should have told him something. After all, Magnus' message was that Horus would betray them. Leman just looked to justify killing Magnus, had he actually viewed the situation with neutral eyes, he'd realize Valdor's word holds more weight then Horus', since not only does it come from someone Big E trusts more then Horus, it also advises to obey Big E as opposed to Horus.
