I was going through my stuff earlier and I'm finding a lot of Tyranids. I've got a flyrant, 10 termagaunts, 10 hormagaunts, and 10 genestealers. What do I need to add to get an ok 1000-1500 point army?
>>
>$50 for the marine codex

>>
>>54380964
Are you fucking kidding me.

I thought we were getting cheaper books like the indexes.
>>
>>54380964

Do you think they will release smaller versions or softcover versions like they did in previous editions?

Doesn't matter I'm still going to pirate it off here anyways
>>
>>54381024
Probably eventually. But I doubt they'll be much cheaper.
>>
How easy/cheap is it to build up a Black Templar army from nothing?
>>
>>54381046
>buy tons of old marines on ebay, repaint
>stuff them in rhinos

Not that hard. Probably run you ~$300 for a rhino rush army?
>>
>>54381046

Easy if you use cheap sources of marines like eBay and starter sets. More expensive than other chapters if you build a "proper" BT army with official Sword Brethren models and Black Templar upgrade packs to add tabards and chains everywhere.
>>
>>54380883
>autosage

>>
>>54380989
The indexes are the cheaper rule books GW was referring to. Codices aren't getting cheaper.
>>
>>54380912
Are you joking? That's barely 400 points. You're gonna need a fucking lot, that's what
>>
The Space Marine codex being $50 isn't so bad when you consider

Buy 4 sets of Tactical Gauntlets of the Dark Angels or Blood Angels variety, preferably for around $50 each.
Acquire a Land Raider Crusader for $40-50.
Acquire Helbrecht, Emperor's Champion, and a used squad of 5 termies for $50 somehow.

Thats $300 of chargerape.

I don't really give a damn how many retarded AoS-tier bits of "art" they crammed in, or whatever lore they're rehashing. They should go like Infinity where rules and fluff are separate.

"K"? Are you fucking kidding me? I spent a decent portion of my life writing all of that and your response to me is "K"? Are you so mentally handicapped that the only letter you can comprehend is "K" - or are you just some fucking asshole who thinks that with such a short response, he can make a statement about how meaningless what was written was? Well, I'll have you know that what I wrote was NOT meaningless, in fact, I even had my written work proof-read by several professors of literature. Don't believe me? I doubt you would, and your response to this will probably be "K" once again. Do I give a fuck? No, does it look like I give even the slightest fuck about a single letter? I bet you took the time to type that one letter too, I bet you sat there and chuckled to yourself for 20 hearty seconds before pressing "send". You're so fucking pathetic. I'm honestly considering directing you to a psychiatrist, but I'm simply far too nice to do something like that. You, however, will go out of your way to make a fool out of someone by responding to a well-thought-out, intelligent, or humorous statement that probably took longer to write than you can last in bed with a chimpanzee. What do I have to say to you? Absolutely nothing. I couldn't be bothered to respond to such a worthless attempt at a response. Do you want "K" on your gravestone? Do you want people to remember you as the asshat who one day decided to respond to someone with a single letter? "Hey, look, everybody! It's that "K" guy!" That's who you are. You're going to be known as the "K" guy. How does it feel? Do you feel happy? Quite honestly, I don't care, which is why I'm not even going to respond to you. Goodbye, and good luck with your future as that guy who said "K".

kinda want to get this mentality out that having a single Riptide is "OP". It's not. They're the Tau's TEQ. It's fair if they can have one if you bring some Termies or a Land Raider. If they bring multiple and in the Wing, then yes that is pretty cheesy.

Also Kroot are shit. They're just expendable meatshields. Having a whole army oriented around them would be incredibly boring. If Tau auxiliaries had the same love that Genestealers then that would be fine.

A "fun" army to play against is something that tries to bring all the neat units into the battle in a combined arms fashion. Not just spamming any one single unit. A good Tau player would know that some well supported fire warrior unit is a cheaper and arguably better source of anti infantry fire power than the other units.

I'm so tired of hearing non Tau players complain about "muh Battlesuits or muh Riptides" They're there in the codex, they have a purpose, just like the FWs.source then any of the battle suits. Just because you get butthurt at the cheesemongers doesn't mean that the other Tau players have to stop using a particular unit. Quit bitching.

It's a crusading space marine chapter that goes around picking up criminals from worlds they visit, arm said criminals and chain them to their armor so they are forced to either fight and potentially live or not fight and die and because they have a habit of chaining normal human beings to their armor( note I don't mean directly to their armor but think of it like a leash) they tend to shun drop pods in favor of footslogging as to not mushify their slave soldiers

Started with Ultramarines because of the bling bling, blue color, and all around "solidness" of being the default chapter (sort of like Ryu in Street Fighter, Terrans in Starcraft, etc), then graduated to Carcharodons because of their color contrast and exotic FW feel with mass armor customization.

Although nowadays Ultramarines have a shit ton of customization too thanks to all the plastic bling GW put out and the 30K shit FW put out.

I don't actually miss any of that. 8e has given him unprecedented TEQ fucking capability, with his 5A (I also give him +1A as his warlord trait bringing him to 6), 2+ re-rolls, re-roll all hits for all Carcharodons units within 6", S5 lightning claws at the old AP2, with 2 damage per hit . Every single TEQ squad I've sent him up against has lost at least 4 models in the first round of combat to Tyberos alone. (haven't encountered storm shields yet) His chainfists are 3 flat damage with re-roll hits so he can eat dreadnoughts, and with my Terminator Librarian buffing him he always hits first. He's far more effective than he ever was. Just give me back my 1pt CCWs on marines, and I'll be a very happy chappy.

Castellan Crowe versus Belial analysis.

tl;dr Crowes extra attacks from wounds rule combos with his rerolls to wound rule really well to give him a deceptively strong profile even against 3+ saves. Don't use him against 2+ saves unless you're going to purifying flame them.

Crowe and Belial are nearly identical against 1 wound MEQ (Crowe kills 2.09, Belial kills 2.16 with sword of silence), Belial is much better against multi wound MEQs.

Belial pulls ahead against termies and multi wound models (1.72 unsaved wounds for 3.45 damage on average versus Crowes 1.0455)

Crowe will do better against stuff with bad saves and is pretty close to Kharnes numbers.

Crowe also does a bit better with hammerhand due to wanting those successful wound rolls to get more attacks.

Add in purifying flame (an extra 2.92 mortal wounds per turn on average) and Crowe will actually beat Belial against most targets on average.

So digging through my old boxes of stuff from 3rd Edition, I've found a bunch of Space Marines I forgot I had; looks like I've got
>Captain (or something I can convert into one easily enough)
>Command Squad/Vet Squad with special weapons
>Devastator Squad
>Tac Squad or two
>Vindicator

Painted in a black with white helmets and shoulder pads to a pretty poor standard but nothing that can't be fixed up or used as a basecoat for a different colour scheme.

What are some fun Chapters I could turn these guys into? I'm leaning towards one of the named, minor Chapters; I've got a soft spot for the ones that show up here and there in the fluff but aren't big names

>>
>>54381961
Bro, there are more obviously Chinese elements than obvious Japanese ones. The only outright obvious obvious Japanese elements are the Sashimono and the Shuriken guns. There are one or two vaguely Shinto symbols used for shrines and shit.

The Eldar swords are closer to Dao and Jian than katanas, their top knots are much closer to the Hanfu (Chinese) style than the Chonmage (samurai) style, there are several taoist, buddhist, and other central asian symbols used for shrines and what have you, and craftworlds are an obvious reference to the Baochuan. Eldar culture apes that of Ming Dynasty China much more than that of feudal Japan too (although a few Japanese elements are occasionally used)

That just means it takes up a flyer slot. It is still a transport.

This edition taking up slots is kind of useful but in previous editions it was a huge downside to take up say-fast attack instead of being a dedicated transport like land raiders, drop pods, razorbacks, etc.

Orks are a great base army to start from. The basic boyz box can be used to create more boyz, or fill in the ranks of other mobs (assuming you have the right bits). I bought a boyz and burna box today, all I did so far was build two tankbusters thanks to the rokkits included. You can get pretty far on very little, depending on how cunning you are.

Marines are neat, I think I'm going to finally start a real force myself soon. Just be sure you know what chapter you like before you get too deep into painting everyone.

Fun fact: Unless I'm missing something, Farsight using his Plasma Rifle, even in rapid-fire range, is one of the most inefficient options I have calculated out. Stuff to watch out for is "belt fees," "certificates," that kinda shit. The studio I train at doesn't do belts, you learn new stuff when you are good at what you've been taught and are ready to move on.

I'd also be wary of people that hate on traditional martial arts. Body mechanics haven't changed, this shit had to work back then and it's had just a few more centuries of development than "modern" stuff. And if you DO go traditional, make sure it's a legit school that has an actual lineage of masters.

>worried about being too old.

Don't. 23 is fine, but start as soon as you can. There's people that are in their 40s and 50s that start, and it is definitely harder for them. If you learn now and get good, you can maintain it for a long time.

Primaris Marines won't be OP. GW has realized that shiny new models tend to sell regardless of rules, while shitty old models are the ones that need to be pushed in the rules to sell. They're using a whole new strategy now. The stuff that comes out fresh and new for 8th will be balanced to the best of their ability while the old stock will get cleared out due to being OP until they run out and then replace them with a new model and "fix" the problem in the next balance update and then they can turn to the fans and say "you asked for us to balance the game so we did! We're such heroes!"

Case in point, Sisters of Battle and the ancient Cadian sculpt guard are ridiculously good right now. Both will be updated with new models in 8th and both will be nerfed in the rules department but they will still sell.

Hmmm well 4 infantry squads plus 2 company commanders is 220 pts and lands 80 shots say.
1 50 man conscript squad plus platoon commander is 170 pts and lands maybe 66 shots on average.
So it works out pretty similar on shots per point , slight advantage to the regular infantry .
I guess the real draw when the codex comes out is the CP to spend on faction rules. Brigades are much easier to reach with a few infantry squads.

IG squads are better at assault screening than conscripts due to the smaller unit size and let you fill out detachments very cheaply. I think they are just as good as conscript blobs but for a different purpose.

I only just checked and saw that Guardsmen are now only 1 point more than Conscripts.

>>
>>54383244

1 Company commander + 1 commissar + 2x50 conscripts: 300 points, 133 hits, 0.44 hits per point. on a 100W blob

3 Company commanders + 6x10 guardsmen = 330 points, 120 hits, 0.36 hits per point on a 60W blob
>>
>>54383380

I don't think it's ever really specified but I think hell-forged stuff is supposed to be possessed so I guess it's all down to the personality of the daemon. Given that the whole daemonic possession thing is part down to technlogies being unavailable and part down to the Dark Mechanicum having a weird obsession with putting daemons in things I wonder how many fairly mundane things are possessed in the eye of terror outside of military usage

Hellforged elevators
Hellforged combine harvesters
Hellforged walkie-talkies
Hellforged hedge trimmers
Hellforged desk lamp

Vallejo
>>
>>54383833
citadel brushes are good. but you can get just as good ones cheaper from other brands. You still want to spend a bit of coin in an art supply store instead of walmart or a craft store.

As for minimum you can probably get away with 3, same sizes as GWs XS, M and L for detailing, general work and base coating/large area coverage respectively.
you'll also want a dedicated drybrush, just go cheap for this as you'll be destroying them frequently.
>>
>>54383973
Ever used GW paints at all?
How do they compare?

>>
>>54383939
impfists sometimes get a shooting focus, so maybe +1 to hit or rerolls, probably only if stationary.
>>
>>54383995
Yes, my first 2 armies I only used citadel.
Vallejo is a little better in quality, you get a lot more for less cost. I dont use one but for airbrushing i hear valleja is infinitely superiour.
Yes they sell medium
>>
>>54383995
I've played with both a little and honestlt I've found them near enough the same.
differences are more in the colours than the paint over all, GW has better bright colours and metallics, plus their technical line is generally handy. Vajello has better natural colours midtones, as well as having a dedicated aurbrushline.
Its worth mentioning that the vajello dropper bottles are better and tend to be around at a better price. Though GW is more often the brand actually on the shelf in a FLGS so theres a certain convenience factor.

In the end there's really no need to stick to one brand.

I wouldn't know what to give them personally, but if the trend continues it's likely each chapter will get both a passive modifier and a more active ability.
>>
>>54384048

>>
>>54383939
I could see fists getting rerolls of 1s when shooting (possibly when stationary as that other anon says), as GW seems to love rules that give rerolls of 1s nowadays. Cover I could see being a stratagem rather than a chapter tactic, spend x CP to fortify x pieces of terrain or something.

Other random guesses:
>scars
CT: Reroll advances, can charge after falling back. Stratagem: spend CP to outflank units.

>bangles
CT: +1S on the charge. Stratagem: allows you reroll charges for jump units that arrived by deepstrike

>dangles:
CT: reroll 1s to hit against chaos. Strategem: they'll probably get more than one, but let's go with deathwing shooting twice the turn they teleport in.

>iron hands:
CT: ignore wounds & mortal wounds on a 6. Strategem: in a 2v2 game you can leave at any time for 1CP, this counts as a win for you but a loss for your partner.
