Merasmus is equally incompetent so I have a hard time believing that he's a proper Wizard. With all of this in mind, I suspect that he is a Charisma caster and using 5E rules, then we're looking for other signs to narow this down from the choices of Tome Warlock and Wild Sorcerer.

He likes his books for "study" and with the Bombinomicon, skulls, necromantic tendencies, his summoning and disguising feats mixed in with a lot of "accidental" results of his spells that he poorly disguises as coincidence or intent, he's most likely a cosplaying Wild Sorcerer.
