Elves have been a lot of things throughout history. I don't thing you appreciate how diverse and huge a superconcept they are, and were, even before Tolkien did his thing. For a lot of Europe the word 'elf' has been during most of its existence general term describing all kinds of vaguely humanoid spirits. The most OG of OG elves were swole and shone with the light of the sun.

Also, those huge fern ears are important signifiers to the Japanese, because the leaf ears used by most western media to denote elves are already present in asian mythology as a general trait for demons.
