Well yeah. Their stuff wears out pretty quick, so they're not going to have any ancient artifacts from before they encountered humanity. And once they did, it's so much easier to loot and modify human stuff that of course that's where the majority of their tech comes from. This is because Orks were developed as a fire and forget weapon, an army that grows it's own logistics and command structure adhoc. You seed a planet with Orks and you have a persistent insurgency force that will continue to come back every few years regardless of how much you burn it out. They can scavenge anything. If they can't scavenge, or build fighting weapons, they fucking grow them via riding/herding squigs and squig bombs.

Orks are the principle of the lasgun distilled into an entire race.

Every ancient Ork warmachine was immediately put to use until it wore out or blew up. Ork tech is made to serve an immediate purpose, so I doubt most things besides cybernetics and bikes get the proper amount of maintenance.

Presumably before they encountered humanity they were largely using looted Eldar crap. Failing that, they can start a haphazard industrial revolution themselves and get to steam engines, but are going to have a tough time getting off system in any appreciable amount of time without someone to loot a drive from.

While Orks predate humans, the only times you see them in the canon are at points (40k and 30k) where they've been in contact with humans for thousands of years, so that would explain why they use lots of looted human stuff.

There are still feral orks of course, but you don't necessarily see a lot of them on the tabletop.

Isn't their forcefield and teleporter tech pretty much all their own invention? That's all they really need to travel from system to system, a teleporter to get on a passing spacehulk/asteroid and enough forcefields so that they don't immediately die. And once they get to a planet, they don't need much. Basic metal work (probably using supplies from whatever they rode in on) and they have choppas enough to go around. They probably road big squigs around or had primitive wagons, but nothing really stopped them from figuring out engines and basic guns (most modern lore suggests they instinctually know how to make basic stuff like that). Remember, the race that made the orks made them for fighting, and winning. They have to be able to do basic stuff on their own for that to happen.

thats just wrong. read the fluff about Wild Boyz eventually settling down and starting civilization. A Mek will be born with basic understanding of everything mechanical and industry will develop. Now, combustion engines and projectile weapons are very priminitve, level 1 basic shit. Humans are kinda dumb for still using them-- because lets face it, "its the go to" for orks
