Yes, and it usually only happens a couple times in the useful life of a tool. If you end up with a paint chip looking seven-layer dip, then that thing's been around a long fucking time.

That doesn't mean every weapon in the setting has a guys soul in it. Then again that implies that somebody just plucked it off some dead guy and threw it into a pile so good idea actually.

Depends on the way your soul weapons work. If it works in the way most people think of intelligent weapons, you could have it react in various ways to historical sites or things of that nature. Feeling heavier, vibrating, that kind of thing.

Alternatively you could have it tied to a particular blood line. Reacting to its great great great granddaughter or something like that.

Performing better against ancient enemies who are now allies might work too. Or the opposite, where it refuses to strike, or performs worse against an ancient ally turned enemy.

Scratched or barely legible insignia or runes or the like is an easy one to do too.

Depending on how maintenance for these things works you could have the soul scribes or whatever ask to look at it more frequently than others'. Or have a noble (connected to an old blood line) ask to see it in private.

Its an unusual design, but the PCs find similar designed weapons in an ancient cache implying the design used to be used, but fell out of favor for whatever reason.

Mechanisms (mechanical, magical, etc.) are in place to protect the soul wielding the device from the weapon that draws from a soul.

These protections erode over time manifesting in many ways.
1. A "recoil" like effect that causes flashes of increasingly severe phantom pain upon use
2. An increasingly intense burning sensation on any exposed skin that touches any part of the weapon
3. For still older weapons, there is a "bleeding" of the soul trapped within the weapon to its user. They increasingly begin to think, feel, and act as the soul in the weapon would have done in life but only within its proximity.

Truly ancient and powerful weapons have been known to "take over" their host almost completely. But the experience is only temporary as it is extremely physically and mentally exhausting for the host. Such weapons are to be destroyed whenever possible
