This time period was around the time when there power in Europe started to decline due to the rise of the Protestant's and the translation of the bible into different languages as well as the attempts to gain footholds in Japan and the Americas.

Just follow the fantasy tropes. Most so-called "medieval" fantasy settings are actually renaissance but without guns. Big cities, large armies, powerful kings, are things of the renaissance. I swear, I have never seen a feudal system in a "medieval fantasy" setting.
