Wei: An ambitious and fiendishly clever man who controlled the remnants of the Han and the majority of China.
Shu: An ambitious and charismatic man who declared himself the "real successor" to the Han because he was distantly related to Liu Bang.
Wu: Some asshole warlord, with no legitimate claim to anything besides a governer position, who randomly and viciously conquered a vast swath of southern china and seceded from the Han and then did almost nothing before mismanaging the country so badly they collapsed and surrendered to Jin.

If Shu and Wu hadn't stalled Wei's inevitable victory, China would be a very different place, because Cao Cao was a civics genius in his day.

Instead, Wei got stalled so long not only did Cao Cao die, but his talented son and grandson also died, leaving Wei ruled by weak stupid people, leading the Sima clan to overthrow them and rebrand as Jin who finally united china.

But here's a tidbit the games never tell you:

Not long after uniting china, the ruler of Jin died. There was a massive, eight way succession crisis. China was horribly weakened and foreigners invaded and crushed China and held huge portions (about 50%) of it for about two hundred years. Thanks Sima clan!
