Why is it a knightly tradition to cuck other knights and nobles?

Why was one of the aspects of courtly love "she's married to a guy of higher station than you"
>>
>>54258479
Because that's what Lancelot did, and he's the OG knight.
>>
>>54258479
Because there's only so much you can do with your errant boys and man needs other outlets.
>>
>>54258494
Yeah, but that was seen as one of his greatest sins/failures, not something to look up to
>>
>>54258479
BLACK(knight)ED
>>
>>54258479
Because there really weren't any un-married/un-betrothed aristocratic women just hanging around riding the knightly cock carousel back in the Middle Ages.

If you're going to have an affair with a noblewoman, you're going to be cucking somebody. And what's the point of having an affair if not with a noblewoman? You wouldn't sully yourself with a peasant wench, would you? It's okay to rape them when on campaign, but you'll lose serious cred with the other knights if they think you have feelings for some lowly commoner.
>>
>>54258531
I think Malory would disagree.
>>
>>54258479

Sleeping with another man isn't as much fun if there's no risk of getting caught, and we don't tend to marry guys for their proficiency in bed; having a big wallet (or a big castle) is a much nicer catch. So naturally we have to turn elsewhere for a good dicking.

Sorry, but unless you feel like going gay, you'll just have to live with that truth. Why should we be exclusive to one man when we can sleep around and get taken care of, and desired, and attention from lots of men?

>>

And girls even. Who not only won't show you tits, and won't leave, but are just fine with not worrying about faithfulness to someone we just keep around as a wallet with legs.
>>
>>54259187
>we
But you are a Gaylord, Gaylord can't marry under the based church back in the golden age of civilization, the middle ages.
>>
>>54259285
>implying your nobleman husband won't eventually get tired of your rampant cuckoldry and have you poisoned
>>
>>54258901
>did not read Malory
There are HUGE chunks of the Morte d'Arthur dedicated entirely to how Lancelot's cucking his own king made him too unclean for the Grail, caused no end of purely earthly problems, led to the ruin of Camelot etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam.
>>
NON BAIT ANSWER

Because of the dual expectations of idealized romantic love and of familial duty

Under familial duty, the woman marries whomever her father chooses, for the benefit of her family. the chivalric tradition also idealized Romantic 'courtly' love however, which was 'pure' love based on affection and admiration.

This competing dualism was understood for the self defeating dichotomy it was. This is why Chivalric Romances tended to be tragedies: either the lovers succumbed to their desire for each other and therefore disgraced themselves and their families and inevitably befell misfortune, OR, they remained pure and so never actually acted out on their feelings for one another. This platonic longing was seen as the ideal, the virtue of love unfettered by the vice of sex or the sin of adultery.

So the simple answer was: YOU DIDN'T KEK ANYONE. A TRUE NIGHT DID NOT NEED TO CONSUMMATE HIS LOVE FOR HIS LADY. That is why Don Quixote sang 'To Love, Pure and Chaste from Afar' in The Impossible Dream. Anyone who thinks it was all about sex is a basic bitch
>>
>>54259310
>poisoned
Burned at the stake, actually. Poisoning is an outlaw and shameful act and why bother since you're well within your rights to torch the bitch?

This isn't one of those fancy-lad centuries where it's illegal to set fire to your own wife.
>>
>>54259392
>tfw you thought it was about based sex
Fuck me I feel dumb now
>>
>>54258479
Forbidden love is hot. Forbidden lust is also hot. It's not really forbidden if you're married, it's sort of forbidden but just feels kind of lazy if you're not married but there's nothing in your way, and it feels like kind of a dick move if you're cucking someone as/with somebody of higher station.

Hence, fucking your liege's wife/husband's vassal, hoping he doesn't find out, and generally bringing ruin and tragedy to everyone involved.
>>
>>54259400
Beheading would be even more likely. Burning was for religious offenses, and a lord accusing his wife of heresy would reflect poorly on his own piety.
>>
>>54259310
Poison is a woman's weapon.
>>
>>54258494
You literally picked the worst example here, son. Like Anon said there's any amoutn of handwringing about Lancelot's cucking activities, but Malory is full of other guys who are depicted as practically heroic for doing the same thing. Tristan fucks La Beale Isode about five hundred times "on screen" as it were, Lamorak has his way with Morgause of Orkney until her SONS (that's Gawain, Mordred and the others, but not Gareth who's a solid) get sick of it and murder him, and that's portrayed as a cowardly act that shames THEM. Various other knights carry on in much the same way, I seem to recall Marhaus jousting a knight who's kidnapped a lady, defeating her, and then kidnapping and fucking her himself, just for example. And let's not forget Uther stealth-cucking the Duke of Cornwall postmortem by disguising himself as him to beget Arthur.

It's not chaste and this guy >>54259392 is full of it, that's the product of later writers (most of them Victorian and uncomfortable with that shit).
>>
>>54259392
It's almost like medieval people had a more nuanced and developed worldview than Enlightenment authors gave them credit for. Who could have ever known? That notion of putting aside temptation in favor of duty, accepting your feelings without letting them control you, is genuinely noble, in my opinion.
>>
>>54259462
Maybe in real life, but in the Arthurian romances burning at the stake is the go-to for threatening Guinevere with.
>>
>>54259462
I was under the impression that men were hung at gallows and women were drowned in pits?
>>
>>54259547
That's because Guinevere wasn't being tried for adultery, she was being tried for witchcraft

Arthur wouldn't 'press charges' as it were for adultery, so THE FUCKING SCOTTS had her accused of witchcraft, with her seduction of Lanselot and Bewitchment of Arthur as evidence
>>
>>54258479
Because most of what we consider to my knightly tradition comes from heavily fictionalized accounts of history like Arthurian legend and Renaissance-era fantasy novels like "Orlando Furioso."

An adulterous love affair is a great plot divice for to introducing conflict among the court nobility without any of the characters actually doing something truly reprehensible like committing treason or practicing black magic or whatever.

>>54259612

This gets way too little mention around here, seeing as it's the origin of almost all of the tropes of classic medieval fantasy.
>>
>>54259781
Well, Lancelot stumbles on it like a dumbass but refrains from entering into the room where it is. And before that he actually stumbles on it but gets robbed due to karma. And...

Okay Lancelot finds the Grail like four separate times. It just doesn't count.

But either way, the crucial thing is the Grail is only for the very most superb knights in all of Christendom and one of the guys who achieves it is literally designed to be divinely amazing and peerless and a walking allegory. And none of the three of them has a "platonic, pure and chaste" lady either. All of the actual courtly love that happens in Malory is fucking. It's courtly plowing.

We're talking about a period of time where knights regularly claimed to be Catholic (do not kill, especially other Christians) and then did exactly that, I don't think sinning was something they gave a shit about. Tell your confessor, if he has the balls to refuse to pardon you find one who will.

Plus Courtly Love was an anachronism anyway and found mostly in stories wrote a few centuries after when fiction about them became popular.
>>
>>54258479
I know this is a joke, but we spent a fair amount of time on middle age stuff in my highschool, mostly cause it was a private one that stressed that sort of thing, and short answer is courtly love is all fucked up. Church basically made it so that it was bad to have legitimate passion in your marriage, and so you get the whole star crossed lovers who can never actually meet thing. Apparently infidelity was actually part of it.

It's worth noting that the historical knights of the round table were barely Christian if they were Christian at all, and Britain in general wasn't even a little bit Christian. I mean, these guys were Roman remnant forces left behind by the collapsing empire in the 400s.

Arthurian legend is an early Renaissance retelling of events that took place in an earlier time among people with much different moral values. The core events were already set (who killed who, who fucked who, etc.), so it can be rather difficult to rationalize the actions of a bunch of stranded Roman cavalrymen warring across a heathen land in terms of the Christian values of the audience the stories were written for.

Where does the tradition of a knight dueling other knights who want to cross a bridge, and escorting maidens across that same bridge come from anyways? Just you, your pal, and your squires sitting around a bridge all day waiting for another knight to pass by so you can challenge him?

>One says no one took the commandment seriously
That was me, and it was broad but true in a lot of cases, especially with Knight's.

>the other says the priests changed the translation to fit their agenda
I don't think anyone did. I said priests said "stop killing other Christians" but not tacked anything on. Though they probably did, but that's a whole new topic.

> and the other guy says they followed the bible by the letter
I don't think anyone said that either.

I think the point of contention here is whether Knights knew the Ten Commandments Which is a retarded question, of course the did. and whether or not they actually cared about it they probably did when it was to their benifit, and they rationalized when it wasn't
see >>54261412 for an example.

>>54261516
King Arthur's Knights, so far as I know.
>>
>>54261516

It's really hard to cross a river in full armor, therefore Knights needed bridges, therefore the best place to wait for other Knights to challenge is a bridge
>>
>>54261475
Religion prior to the Protestant heresy was pretty weird and inconsistent in most of Europe.

The early Medieval cities were in the grasp of the Catholic church, but the peasants in the countryside mostly held to a sort of syncretic Christian paganism. They believed in Jesus, but they also believed in a lot more than that and even the priests in rural areas would have never seen a Bible.
>>
>>54261571
>>54261551

Unless they had risen to the level of a liegelord, they literally had all the free time in the world to hone their martial skill.

Nope. Knights spent relatively little time on campaign. Most wars were short and wars only happened now and then. Unless his lord went on crusade and called him to join, or one of the local wars has lead to a siege, a knight is going to have nothing to do 95% of the time.

One of the major motivating factors for the Pope to call a crusade was an excess of idle knights causing mischief in Europe.

It's a bit more complex than that. Lamorak's pops King Pellinore killed King Lot in a battle. Later, Lot's sons, Gawain and who cares kill Pellinore in a duel. Lamorak decides yo that ain't cool and bangs Lot's widow WHO IS NO LONGER MARRIED, and then Gawain, Mordred, and some other nerds kill Lamorak for basically being their stepdad. Oh, wait, but not before Gaheris beheads his own mom for banging a guy when she's single.

It's pretty clear that Christian priests spent a lot of time yelling at brutal knights about how ungodly their behavior was and how much they were going to hell, and that the various nobles didn't give a fuck. Basically modern morals were constructed very, very slowly, brick by brick.

>>54261347
>the historical knights of the round table were barely Christian if they were Christian at all
You're an idiot. There were no historical knights of the round table and even in the early Celtic poems where Arthur first shows up he's explicitly Christian and a character used to teach the rough principles of Christian morality. (For example "Who's The Gatekeeper in Heaven?" where his nephew in the form of an eagle explains afterlife doctrine to Arthur)

Jesus Christ.
Christ means Anointed One.
Jewish anointing oil was probably made with a fuckload of olive oil and weed.
Weed only gets you stoned/high if you smoke it, or bind it with fats.
Olive oil is fat. If you get anointed with olive oil that's fuckfull of weed, you're gonna get high as fuck.
Several theologians have proposed that religions dislike drugs because drugs facilitate a democratisation of "religious experiences". Anyone can do drugs and "meet God/The Divine". No more need for NEET priests that sit in a dark room 24/7 12 months in the year meditating when you can literally do some drugs and "hear God" yourself.

The entire point of courtly love was to prevent people from having sex. Especially other people from having sex with your spouse.
>>
>>54258479
because the entire tradition of courtly love and chivalry, as we understand it today, came out of a time after the knightly caste had ceased to be useful, as am exercise in justifying the existence of the now-useless caste through retronning. People are more likely to accept the retcon if it's an interesting and compelling narrative, and it makes a much better romance novel if the love is unattainable, because of higher-status-marriage.
>>

It comes from the Cuckoo bird which lays its egg in the nest of other birds. If the owner of the nest breaks the egg or pecks the chick to death, its parents swoop in and destroy the contents of the nest. This often forces the other bird to become a cuckold. (See opening one-sentence paragraph)

Albertus Magnus (c. 1206–1280) – Dominican friar and Bishop of Regensberg who has been described as "one of the most famous precursors of modern science in the High Middle Ages." Patron saint of natural sciences; Works in physics, logic, metaphysics, biology, and psychology.

Roger Bacon (c. 1214–1294) – Franciscan friar who made significant contributions to mathematics and optics and has been described as a forerunner of modern scientific method

Bernardino Baldi (1533–1617) – abbot, mathematician, and writer

Theodoric Borgognoni (1205–1298) – Dominican friar, Bishop of Cervia, and medieval Surgeon who made important contributions to antiseptic practice and anaesthetics

Christopher Borrus (1583–1632) – Jesuit mathematician and astronomy who made observations on the magnetic variation of the compass

Thomas Bradwardine (c. 1290–1349) – Archbishop of Canturbury and mathematician who helped develop the mean speed theorem; one of the Oxford Calculators

Jean Buridan (c. 1300 – after 1358) – priest who formulated early ideas of momentum and inertial motion and sowed the seeds of the Copernican revolution in Europe

Yes, it does. The Hebrew infinitive for "To Kill" is
הרג

What you see in Exodus 20:12 is לא תרצח, which is do not murder, at least when applied to people. (It could theoretically also mean do not smash objects to pieces, but that seems less likely from context).

In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or Medieval Period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) – Renaissance astronomer and canon famous for his heliocentric cosmology that set in motion the Copernican Revolution

Still 'too late' for you since it scrapes the end? Roger Bacon, Albert of Saxony, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Bradwardine, Jean Buridan, Robert Grossteste, Ramon Llull, William of Ockham, Nicole Orseme, John Peckham, Johannes de Sacrobosco, Pope Sylvester II, Theodoric of Freiburg, Witelo, Vincent of Beauvais

Are you seriously fucking looking for major written scientific works before the 10th century AD, you mong?

>>54266295
I'd recommend "Growing up in medieval London" by Barbera Hainswalt. If you were an urban lady in medieval/renaissance Europe, your chances of dying within 1 month of giving birth were a bit under 1 in 5. That's per pregnancy by the way, not per woman. It was lower for rural women, because it was mostly post-birth infections, not childbirth itself, and there was less contagion when population density was lower.

Remember, most people would not go to war more than once in their life, if even that, and most battles in the era would only have mass casualties for the loser, since most of the killing was done in a post-rout chase. Meanwhile, women are getting pregnant and giving birth almost constantly.

Childbirth was orders of magnitude more dangerous than war, even for the common soldiery.
>>
>>54266760
Bede, Rabanus Maurus and Adelard of Bath. There's others, as well.

Also, the reason there's seemingly not as many scientists from medieval europe is because paper at the time was really shit and papyrus rotted really fast in the cold, humid climate of europe compared to the dry climate of the levant and northern africa. You'll notice that the amount of writings, books and scientists explode in the 13th and 14th century and that's because it's when higher quality paper was invented (by europeans).

>Are you seriously fucking looking for major written scientific works before the 10th century AD, you mong?
Yes. Because for most of the medieval period, the clergy just sat on a big stack of Antiquity knowledge, doing nothing. Only at the butt-end of the Late Middle Ages do they start working with all that wisdom they have.

Are you... retarded? Is that the issue you have? There are places you can go anon, people you can see.

The Medieval Period is the 5th century to the 15th century. As for what they 'did' with their knowledge, what exactly were they fucking supposed to do with it? They had their hands full keeping the records safe and accurate. No one else could read, the lands were ruled by Warlords who gave NO fucks unless it gave them an advantage in battle, and the records themselves were in foreign languages and often incomplete and always in a process of degrading.

Fucking fedora's who just can't handle that Christian Monks were the font of scientific and philosophical understanding of their era. If you can't deny they actually did these things, you have to argue they didn't do it FAST enough to suit you.

Nowhere close. Polybius gives betwen the Romans and their allies 770,000 men fit to bear arms in 225 B.C., and in a war that lasted for 17 years, and had new people being born and inducted to military age and property during that time, the number is far higher. You never see anything close to that number of troops being fielded.

I don't know where you heard this but it isn't true.

The cuckoo lays an egg in another bird's nest and the hatchling develops faster/larger than the others, causing the death of its "siblings". The adult cuckoo is nowhere to be found after it drops off the egg.

The renaissance wasn't some sort of magical time period where the entirety of europe stopped being medieval, it was a localized movement that lasted for about 20 or 30 years in northern Italy. Places like England continued being feudal shitholes until the closing stages of the 15th century and Russia had serfdom until the 19th century.

>. Why should we be exclusive to one man when we can sleep around and get taken care of, and desired, and attention from lots of men?

Mostly because when a social contract collapses, one side stops playing at the same rate or at all. Witness the modern phenomenon of successful men or even mediocre men who have realized that marriage is a losing game and instead get their sex casually or through porn and prostitution and their emotional gratification through the media or a pet. This is mostly working out for men, who are pretty independent, but not as well for women.

It also presents a danger of being replaced by populations that breed like cockroaches.

That's just ugly fat men that cannot get a sexy woman based off their own looks and physique, so they use tools to acquire women of a higher beauty standard than would be available to them through normal means.
>>
>>54267639
It's weird to think about how in the past, we've always had huge amounts of bachelors who were only able to secure sex through prostitutes, but they largely went under the radar, and only now with the Internet do we get to see how many thirsty males there actually are.

It's also really interesting to see how the MRA/MGTOW crowd has responded to this and attempted to convince themselves that they don't actually want to be with women.

Yes. Orkney is its own kingdom and Scotland isn't just one kingdom, either. In fact, a lot of the time when Malory says England he seems to mean what we'd call Britain, and when he wants to refer to modern England he says Logrys; but he's so inconsistent about it that it's hard to be quite sure.

In any case, the best king is Deu of Goddal, i.e. God of the Valley of God.

Statisticly it was. Women of childbearing age had up to a 1 in 4 chance of dying during every pregnancy. Without access to safe or effective contraception/abortion, this continued every year between the ages 13-45 (roughly), so long as they were still being ploughed.

In no war until the age of industrialised warfare did your average soldier undergo anything like such a risk. A 1 in 4 chance of dying for every male of military age, for 30+ years? That's the sort of attrition that bleeds nations dry. I think the closest comparison is the 30 years war.

Short version, people in the modern developed world have no fucking clue how dangerous pregnancy is without modern developed medicine. There's a reason why it's still one of the leading causes of death *today*.
>>
>>54268668
>I think the closest comparison is the 30 years war.

That as one massive fuckup of collossal proportions. To put it in perspective, if you use relative numbers, the 30 Year War makes WW2 including Holocaust look like a joke.
>>
>>54268989
Hence why in almost all societies until the modern age the amount of unmarried men outnumbered the amount of marriageable women, and why the upper classes put so much emphasis on finding brides from superior child-bearing stock.

The numbers are almost unbelieveable, but the archaeology supports the conclusion. Pregnancy without modern science is brutal.

>>

Something like that. DNA/archeological evidence indicates that even after the invasion native Britons outnumbered saxons 4 to 1 in the south and east, and the saxon settlers quickly married into the native population. The only people that were 'wiped out' were the ruling elites, aristocrats, and clergy. And most of those were able to migrate elsewhere, causing the usual problems that occur when a band of salty rich guys with too much money find themselves out of power.

Basically everyone in Europe took turns using Germany as a battleground, mainly using German mercenaries. So if Spain was mad at England for not being Catholic enough or whatever, they would pay money to have a bunch of Germans fight the English (or, more likely, another bunch of Germans being paid by the English to fight the Swedish (German mercenaries)). Whenever someone dropped out of the fight when they ran out of money/got bored, usually someone else would decide now was the perfect time to pile in. This went on for thirty years.
>>
>>54274601

Mostly that's due to recent developments. European countries made themselves codependent through stuff like the trade aspect of the EU.

The reason why sociopathic or egotistical women get away with monstrous behaviour is simply that men are too respectful of women's privacy to tell all their friends about it in detail (the way a woman would.)
Men who are looking for relationships almost universally wish to avoid women who exhibit those kinds of behaviours. If we were better at swapping war stories and doing research into people we're into (something many women incidentally tend to be great at), we would practically never get NTR'ed by chads because we'd hear about all the red flags from each prospective mate's past before we got fucking married to her.
