So, I talked to my friends tonight. It's my turn behind the screen next, and half the grouop prefers a narrative game while the other half likes a more gamist style. To me, the best kind of game for this would be something like Log Horizon, Sword Art Online, .hack, etc. Something where the mechanics are part of the story, or treated as a set piece.

My question is: Is there a game that can achieve this kind of MMO-like progression out of the box without a lit of fiddling or extra work?

This might be the only time where D&D can be recommended.

D&D because it's shit like everything you mentioned

WotC D&D, to be clear.
Not TSR D&D.

I don't know your group or what specific themes they're into but maybe there's a harry potter homebrew on the /tg/ wiki that my group has decided will be our next campaign for that exact reason since the story has to be directly tied into the gameplay.

You are preaching to the fucki g choir, for the record. I saw a little bit of SAO and thought it was hot garbage. Saw most of .hack//SIGN in my younger weeb days and thought it was okay.

More vidya than HP, probably, but worth pitching.

Strike!

It's simplified 4e D&D with some very simple narrative mechanics to handle skills/out of combat.

The Log Horizon TRPG.

D&D 4e.
I've been considering running something like this since I saw Log Horizon, but haven't had the chance.

What even is the purpose of your post?

Not that anon, but it was clearly a playful insult.

But for what purpose?

A sensible chuckle?
