Daily reminder that, if you don't allow electronic dice rollers at your table, you are a oppressive shitlord because how dare you expect a player to spend 2 bucks on a set of dice.

Electronic dice roller is also a fair bit faster and more convenient, even doing all the math for you. It can speed up gameplay significantly if your system of choice involves a whole lot of number crunching.

I don't care what my players use.
Hell, I use physical and electronic - electronic for rolling large amounts of dice at once, physical for everything else.
>but what if they cheat
If they wanted to cheat then they can do that regardless of whether they're using electronic or physical dice.
If they feel the need to cheat at a cooperative game then I think they might need help though.
>>
>>54116542
So long as I get to see the roll and the result, I really couldn't care less. Roll with whatever is convenient to you.
>>
>>54116542
Electronic dicerollers aren't random. They can't be without special designs, such as random.org's wind current based rolls. If it's not tapped into a truly random element of the world, no program can create truly random numbers.

Dice or nothing.

It's also possible that they encounter someone like OP who responds to even the smallest complaint they make about anything by taking it as proof that they're the political devil and proceeding to be even more obnoxious out of self-righteous spite.

And he probably accused them of "shoving their politics everywhere" at some point while he did it.

Have them disable internet on their phone or refuse to give them a wifi password.

Beyond that, you have to ask yourself whether or not they're looking at their wall because they have a short attention span or if you're just not providing anything that keeps them engaged to your plot.
>>
>>54116542
Or I'm a generous DM who has a big bag of dice I let my players use, and don't give a fuck about dice rollers because I'm too busy setting up the next encounter.

Did once, after the dude didn't stop rolling 16+ for 5 hours never again

>>
>>54118908

He's right though.
There's no such thing as randomness, we just can't predict the results of a die roll because we don't know all the physical variables and can't extrapolate a result from them.
Once you start talking about randomness, you're talking about feelings; "I, personally, don't know what the result will be so it's random!"
>>
Do you literally search out for trivial shit to get enraged by OP? Every day, on the internet? How long do you spend each day doing it? How is it working out for you, life-wise?
>>
>>54119395
The problem with arguing about feelings is that feelings can have nothing to do with empirical data. Anyone can FEEL anything but given that we tend to jump the gun and recoil in disgust at even the hint of bad vibes, people just feel a thing and then disassociate themselves from that thing even if their feelings are incorrect due to a lack of information.

When you allow feelings to supplant empirical data, you end with groups like the flat-earthers, tumblrinas, and anti-vaxxers who are pure Id with little to no (Super) Ego to guide their actions.
>>
>>54118156
If your game's not interesting enough to keep them away from the internet, that's on you.
>>
>>54119235
This exactly. When I'm running a game, if a player doesn't have their own dice, I have a pile of loaner dice they can use.

Electronic rollers are too easy to tamper with and not leave visible signs.
>>
>>54118156
>I can't maintain the group's attention span unless all eyes are on me.
I'm sorry you're too spineless to actually manage a table or entertaining enough to maintain the group's attention. We're not all meant to be good GM's unfortunately and smartphones or no, your players will just get distracted by something else.
>inb4 buttmad reply of wall text talking about how many campaigns you totally ran that were totally fun for everyone involved.
>>
>>54119605
The "Crit Dice" app gives you a history tab if you really want to make sure that the player actually rolled three NAT 20's in a row.

I'm sure there're more out there that allow the same function but that's the one that I personally use and have the most experience in.
>>
>>54119605
>Electronic rollers are too easy to tamper with and not leave visible signs.

So are dice.

Don't tell me you can tell from a glance if someone microwaved his d6.

If you really don't trust your players just mandate everyone uses the same roller app that you checked beforehand; same as if you loaned your own dice.
>>
>>54116666
gw assauld dice are close, using simulated physical dice and a physics engine.
>>
>>54118935
That's a very popular strawman among people who hate the fact that other people's feelings exist..
>>
>>54116666
They however tend to be more fairly distributed than physical dice.

And predicting future rolls because it is only pseudorandom? That is very much so a difficult thing. (depending on the algorithm used)
>>
>>54119711
This

Also, I hate electronic dice rollers, but if someone else wants to use them for their rolls, who the fuck am I to say no? Or maybe dice of unpleasant colours should be banned too.

If you are afraid that your players cheat, talk to them or get better players. And anyone complaining about the difference in randomness between electronic and physical dice doesn't understand what they are talking about.
>>
>>54119656
A microwaved d6 will not give the owner as reliably biased rolls as a tampered electronic roller. I can re-write the code for an electronic roller so that it gives me exactly the numbers I want, depending on how I activate it, and can do it in a way that doesn't show up to the people watching. Microwaved dice will just have a bias to one side, and even then aren't a guarantee.

So yeah, I can tell at a glance that those microwaved, slightly melted dice are always going to be biased to the same numbers. You can not tell at a glance that my hacked roller is giving me exactly the numbers I'm telling it to.
>>
I give so little of a shit about what dice people use if someone wanted to use an electronic roller that would be fine provided it was clear.

Or, you know, I'd fucking lend them some dice

>>
>>54120625
Very true.
Funny thing, the base random number generation algorithm in computers is predictable - if given the same seed, it will produce the same set of numbers. If instead, you give it the current clock time (which is measured in miliseconds since January 1st 1970), the numbers will be just as random as any physical die.

In unix, /dev/random and /dev/urandom are seeded based on things like timing between keypresses, and static coming in from any and all available devices on your computer. Wiggle your mouse - you've just altered the random number sequence, and made it no longer predictable.

That said, I still prefer real dice in my games, and hand out loaner dice to players who don't have their own. Sometimes I even hand them messed up dice just for laughs. (This d20 hasn't rolled above a 9 in the last half hour... wait a minute... zero? HEY!)
>>
>>54120372
Awesome, so restrict the app then?

If you are that good, make your own and just have everyone in the group use it.

I'll never understand how people who are so shit at trusting others could ever have a group to play with but w/e.
>>
>>54116585

.............................you could just roll in the corner and lie too.

Or just tell the gm you can't stand losing

then just say "oh wow another 20!" every time you habe to roll

even if it's not d&d
>>
>>54120787
It's a hell of a lot less work to reach into my bag of a hundred dice and hand them some than to try and get everyone to reach the tablet to roll their dice there.

I tried it once, it was awkward and annoying, and we all went back to real dice afterwards.
>>
Hmmm. Takes the fun away...
>>
>>54120838
I mean have everyone in the group download and use their app on their own thing, not everyone literally use your tablet.

At that point, yes, just handing out dice is better I guess.
>>
>>54120890
The whole point of it is to roll where everyone else can see it. Yeah, I could probably write a network app with a server that does the rolling and displays the... dammit, I've already got ten other game related coding projects on the go, you just had to add another one, didn't you?

>>

>Neither are actual dice.
This.

One game I played, there was a player that we eventually had to do his rolls for him, because he would spend almost ten seconds lining up the d20 in the palm of his hand, then roll in the exact same way every time.

He would get either a 19 or a 20 about half the time.

Even fair dice aren't even remotely random.

>>54121055
That adds layers of complexity to the player's lives, which will result in "why don't we just use real dice? We've all got dice anyways".

My way only adds extra work to me, and I've got three weeks of vacation time that I'm getting yelled at for not taking, so I need _something_ to do with it. Just needs a web gui for the players, everyone's got a web browser on their phones anymore.

I'll probably post a link to the finished product some time in early august, and I'm going to blame you guys for it's existence.

Fucking niggers today, I swear to God. The whole point is you sit down at a table with some friends and some dice.
>>
>>54120782
You know... with all this talk of tampering with the app/program...

It might actually be better that the pseudorandom algorithm can be predicted given the same seed. You could use that so that the GM or other players can verify your rolls.

Only thing I miss in that, is that it could also potentially allow it to see future rolls... Though I don't think that is necessarily an unsurpassable problem.

This, it's really a non-issue. It's the attitude voiced in OP's pic, that we should suck new players' dicks because the hobby is on the verge of dying, that is retarded.
>>
>>54124332
Or hell, just let him borrow your dice when you aren't rolling. I can understand going for physical dice in lieu of virtual rollers in person. But if you're going to demand it, at least be accommodating. Unless you have some form of auto-immune deficiency, you have no excuse to not just take the five seconds to pass the dice.

>Ever playing a system that would use d10s or d20s

Current group doesn't feel that need, but they also all like their real dice (one of them doesn't even phone anyways). Also, our sessions tend to go long enough that most people's phones would have dead batteries by the end of it if we relied on that. Physical dice don't need batteries. Usually.

In the before time, I gamed with a much larger/rotating group, and we had the occasional 'problem' gamer who had difficulty with honesty. One of them did try the microwave dice thing. The first try did not work the way they wanted (constant botches, oops!), and the second time deformed their dice noticably. Mostly they tried to cheat by doing things like knocking their dice, or using dice so hard to read that nobody could tell if that was a 1, a 4, or a 7. Seriously, black and white speckled dice should never have white numbers. We made that guy use loaner dice when he brought those a second time. (Which I never got back, but at least he was using dice we could all read afterwards.)
