Stuff in the 90s was shittier than in the real world and somehow led to corporations getting lots of power.

In 2012 magic comes back, Native people make the most use of it immediately because they notice first. I forget the exact context but at the time most Natives in the states were being persecuted and put in camps for some reason. They quickly wreck all the military forces sent to take them out and leverage a treaty that gets a lot of territory back. This leads to the US and Canada being highly destabilized and combined with worldwide problems like a third of Germany being torched by a dragon and a Chinese civil war they aren't able to recover very quickly. Bits break off permanently, like California, Quebec the CAS. White people in Native controlled regions mostly just live with it but there are insurgent groups I think. There is some repression of overtly white culture like Christianity I believe.

Altogether they're a mix, some are cool like the one who was president, some are pretty much just animals in their motivations, some are extreme nationalists. The people who adapted to magic faster were the people who got an early leg up over everyone else, more or less, and at first the Roman Catholic Church was going on about the debbil and such.
To be fair, a LOT of those early magic adapters have been highly suggested in the fluff to have gotten some behind the scenes help with advancing their arcane sciences so much faster then everyone else.

One of the only consistent themes of SR (in so far a setting as nutty as the Sixth World even has themes) is that the Sixth World's definition of "normal" is so constantly in flux that there's really no such thing anymore, with magic and science and world events having happened at such a catastrophic pace that trying to define a normal baseline for anything is next to impossible.

Haley's Comet shook up a lot of shit, but after the year ended the changes stuck around but they weren't quite dramatic enough to really cause a global social apocalypse or anything like it.
The Emergence MIGHT count, but really it caused less overall problems then the Awakening did, instead just adding one more element of insanity to the world.
