As an additional option, you can just say the Eldritch Magic has severe disadvantages. It's hard to use, takes forever to cast, threatens to eat the user at every opportunity, annoying stuff like that. Or make his superiors (i. e. Cthulhu & friends) be really content with watching him lose to you.
