Perhaps there's a big capital in the centre of the world. I don't know where the taxes go; sure some go to the local burghers and the nobles and the various tolls and bridges but some of it goes down that road carried by escort. All I know is that we pledge our loyalty to the rulers of that city when we come of age and pay the taxes. Aside from that, no one knows. Everyone pays, everyone pledges. It's not a lot. Just pennies really, no one really even pays it any mind. It's a tiny fraction of a percentage. But everyone pays, from the guildmasters to the peasants.

Perhaps one day I'll go and find out just what we all belong to.

The closer and closer you get to the center, the more society changes. Technology improves, but even as transportation gets faster and faster, the distance is still immense. You live in an early modern society. A thousand miles away, it's the 17th century. Another five thousand and it's 1880s and 10 thousand on it's the 20th century. Go even further and the technology keeps improving and improving. But everyone, everyone still swears loyalty to the centre and still pays that tiny tax. Hundreds of thousands of nations and civilisations fighting and squabbling and politicking, but all still loyal.

An' it's not an inn the size of a castle, it's what the fancy city folk call a "ho-tel," what is like an inn but bigger an' they serve proper posh nob food an' have fancy gold-rimmed chamber pots for to piss in.
