Let's talk magic.

There are 3 main branches of magic with 4 types of spellcasters, each with their own spell-casting identity/gimmick.

>Elementalists
>Mystics/Divines
>Necromancers

There are three types of mediums used for casting spells, plus a unique type of medium exclusive to Necromancers.

>Staff
A big stick that needs to be carried in both hands. Benefits the strength and control of spells, achieving maximum power and success rate

>Wand
A small stick that can be carried in one hand. Same exact function as the staff, but with less effectiveness.

>Books/tomes
Books with knowledge/instructions/tips for spells one might be inexperienced in casting. Books might allow spellcasters to cast certain spells they otherwise wouldn't know, or increase the success rate a spell might have.

>Trinkets - The spellcasting medium for necromancers. Certain spells can only be cast with the appropriate trinket

>*Free-hand
Spells can also be cast without the use of a medium but the power and control over the spell is at it's lowest.

Surely you don't need to hold the tome while casting the spell? It seems like something you'd read and learn from and then leave at home.
>>
The tome is the safest choice for spells people don't know/haven't mastered. You're reading notes while taking a test.
>>
Couldn't a spell caster just use whatever as an arcane focus? Like a an amethyst or a rag doll?

Arcane focuses usually have two key elements: a natural element to connect them closer to the natural magic around them, and an 'artificial' element to sharpen their own mind.

Certain rings, jewelry, clothes and other miscellaneous objects can increase a spell's effectiveness, but it's not nearly as potent as potent as a staff or wand crafted for the purpose of magic.

I like to use the same system that the DOTA lore uses when it comes to magic, spellcasters can learn spells but they take a lot of space in your memory, so a very talented spellcaster can know how to cast around 3 or 4 spells by memory, so carrying a book to actually have them written down makes a lot of sense

>Necromancers

Necromancers have 3 general types of spells, that each come with two versions.

>Version 1 -
The necromancer uses his own mana/imagination/memories to shape a spectral entity. The ghostly entity can be entirely fictional, and is only limited by the necromancer's faith in the spell. Entities based on people or creatures the necromancer is familiar with tend to be stronger than ones constructed entirely by his imagination.

This type of necromancy is seen in a neutral light to most people, as it is not directly related to the subject at hand in any way.

>Version 2 - Undeath
This version of necromancy requires a superbly valuable trinket to the subject(i.e a sword he was buried with) or a direct bone fragment or scrap of hair. Using the strong spiritual connection, the necromancer summons the subject from the dead, reconstructing the body into an undead-like state or creating a skeleton if the body isn't available, and then binding the soul to the body, under the caster's will. Because of the physical presence, Version 2 spells are much stronger than version 1 spells in every way.
Because of the forced servitude of the spirit and it's pained existence, this form of necromancy is seen as evil by all cultures.

>Version 3* - Relife
This form of necromancy focuses on the spirit without the body. Usually performed by priests to communicate any last words between them and their loved ones before sending them off.
Because of the well-meaning and almost always much desired nature of magic, this form of necromancy is often seen as holy.

Besides the 2 versions of necromancy, most spells are divided into 3 categories

>Necromancers(part 2/2)

>Instance summoning
This type of spell is usually done without an undead presence. Spells of this type are usually short in duration and happen in an "instant" - a ghostly sword slashing through the air at it's target before disappearing, a skeletal head biting down, etc.

Independent summoning -
This type of spell summons the subject to do the necromancer's bidding. It's vitality(or the amount of damage it can take before disappearing) it's time limit before disappearing, and the amount of Independent summons a necromancer can control at any given time is based on the skill, power, and mana of the necromancer.

>Full-control summoning
This type of spell can only be done with an Undead subject. In this type of spell, the necromancer summons a subject and enters a trance-like state, transferring his consciousness into the summoned creature. While in control, the creature's body is powered and supplemented by both the capabilities of the creature in life, and the necromancer's own skill - leading to one very powerful, albeit temporary, being and one vulnerable(but most likely hidden) necromancer

Taking a break. Didn't expect to take half this long. I'll continue witht he rest if the thread is still up, if not I'll continue another day.
>>
What about Sorcerers and Warlocks, they don't need to focus to cast thier spells, I think they can just catch them straight from their head, right?
