The Empress made a deal with a Void Dragon a long time ago. In exchange for her immortality, she would be required to stay in the same country for the rest of her life. The Void Dragon was what was keeping all the other dragons from causing trouble for everyone, so she had to take his place.

Given that she has ruled for so long, she decided to create a Senate, where every noble house would have a voice, and allows them to make most of the laws but will step in when necessary.

Best cantrips for a Forge domain Cleric?

Mending is very thematic, though as a Clan Crafter and a worshipper of the forge god, repairing things with magic is a emergency measure, as actual work is both craft, hobby and prayer.

Sacred Flame is nice as a ranged attacks for a 10 dex melee and kind of ties into a divine fire forge

But it's a hard choice.

Remember with point buy (and other ability score producing methods), you've yet to choose a race and have the option of feats, so your ability scores in the end aren't as bad as they may seem.

>Tell me about the warlords, kings, emperors, lords, sovereigns, and rulers, in your games.

My setting is America-esque in origin, in that it was discovered by explorers from a faraway kingdom, and then it was colonized. Due to the immense distance between the kingdom and the colony, when the kingdom erupted into a fierce and bitter civil war, the colony was hardly involved, and when the war ended with the dissolution of the kingdom, the colony was left on its own, as no one came back to claim it. It wasn't worth the effort or expense to maintain something so far away.

However, the colony was still ruled by nobles appointed by the old monarchy, so when the kingdom dissolved, the colony had nobles that were suddenly nobles in name only. With their right to rule swept out from under them, the existing nobles used their resources and influence to stamp out any attempt at orchestrating a new system of government. To this day, they invest heavily in preventing the common people from organizing against the aristocracy.

So the colony currently exists as a plutocracy. Its de facto leader is an apathetic duchess that descended from the original nobles. The blood line is kept clean and in power, and the haughty rich friends of the duchess are just as well the other rules of the colony. They own the land and the businesses, so they own the people.

>>54057110

I like The Adventure Zone but it's extremely rules-light and focused more on comedy and collaborative narrative, probably not what you're looking for if you want real live play. In their most recent story arc they're not even doing D&D anymore.

It's kind of lost its charm with this detour just because the new format is kind of underwhelming, but the humor is still good enough to keep it listenable. I just can't wait for them to wrap it up so they can do something new. I really hope Travis DMs the next saga but Clint DMing some kind of superhero world sounds incredible.

The Gnome-King rules Morren, under the constitution unifying his people with the dwarves, but he shares power regarding foreign affairs with the Prime, elected from dwarven nobility. Under the terms of the constitution, the gnomes protect the surface lands while the dwarves defend the underground.

Within the borders of Morren is Silver City, which functions more or less autonomously, and is ruled de facto by Trade Prince Nasir, whose business connections and ties to everyone who's anyone in the city make him untouchable.

The Hyksoon Orcs are led by Kurgos, a visionary former adventurer who broke from his people's traditional Chaotic, raiding ways to teach the orcs to build empires - orcish cavalry are feared across the East for their savagery in combat as well as their terrifying eye for strategy, thanks to his rule.

Iliya, known as the Weeping Queen, married a human king seven hundred years ago and has watched dozens of generations of her own deacendents live and die. Her wisdom as a ruler is unmatched, but so is her melancholy.

>>
>>54058220
I would allow it. It would look fucking stupid, but hey, dualwielding exists.
>>
>>54058220
Yeah, you can make one attack with a sword and another with the spear with extra attack, and not technically be dual-wielding at all. Useful for people without a fighting style or a shield.

My personal favorite combo is a Rapier + Whip on a Valor Bard because a Whip is much better defence then a Shield will ever be.
>>
>>54058243

>>
>>54058243
>Kitchen sinks are way more interesting, at least to me
The true mark of an uncreeative mind.
The imbecile is interest in the traits of a race.
Mature people care for the relationship between races and the themes carried by that. Throwing twenty different racial options into the mix guarantuees there won't any theme between them. For the same reason monsters should be selected with utmost care ruins the feel of a world faster than having a themepark of enemies.
>>
How would you rule a player trying to use an improvised weapon to grapple at range?
My player has a 10ft length of chain and wants to use it to attack people 10ft away and pull them closer.

>Kitchen sinks are way more interesting, at least to me

5) Ranger or Rogue (he hasn't decided yet), but we are steering him towards that path
6) if this person shows up, expect another cleric

Gnomes suck. Their concept is incredibly flimsy, their ecological niche is literally already filled, they have no precedents in fantasy or folklore that is not also represented in a more intersting fashion and their design is basically one for people to be lolrandumb.

thanks j.r.r. fuckface but if have you considered that relying on the same regurgitated tropes for the same recycled races over and over and over is actually the boring and creative option? not everybody wants to be from a dwarven mining town in the mountains for the hundredth time.

a world where a character isn't locked into a role because of their race and are able to create their own identity and forge their own place in the world through personal stake and grit can be just as, if not more interesting than your bland, lego-brick world that you refuse to construct in new ways. if you're looking for a theme for a setting, why not Individualism, why not the desire to overcome one's past, why not perception of history as a burden, and if you're still so chained to your bullshit, throw a curveball about no character being able to shrug off that burden so easily

So finally hit 9th level with my Cleric, and was looking at the spells, but there only seem to be a few spells that I can actually use in combat. Is Contagion good enough to warrant a minimum 3 turn delay or should I just stick to Flame Striking shit?

She transitioned from a run-of-the-mill dwarven prostitute to something approaching the companion in Firefly. That is to say, she didn't just gangbang her way into her fortune, she eventually became as close to a classy escort as she could. I also have to give her credit in that it never got weird, she'd always just say she was going out working and would deal with the fine print out of session.

Well then, you seem to have quite an opportunity here! A fine young one such as yourself could find yourself a job with any guild or union in all of Tranor! Do you have a particular link with any Godly entity? Because I could see you as a well respected Cleric, one who could carry the name of any God to glory! Or perhaps you wish to lead a contingent of the Druidic folk in preserving the untamed wilds of the frontier? Either way, you will have the backing of the Guild with you. Approved!
>>
>>54059142
The idea of a prostitute getting more classy over time always seemed kind of contradictory to me. I feel like you pretty much start as classy as you're going to get in that profession
>>
>>54059138
Level 5 spells are pretty disappointing for clerics.
Contagion can be good if you think an enemy will last 3 rounds.
Dispel good and evil is amazing if you are ever fighting those enemies
Flame strike is just a bad fireball really.
Honestly, I'd just use my 5th level slot to banish two enemies
>>
>>54059138
Well you can now Spirit Guardians for 5d8 damage each turn which is pretty fucking cool.

I'd prepare either Contagion or Dispel Good and Evil each day. They're both good enough to prepare one even if you don't end up needing it.
>>
>>54059187
It was a combination of pragmatism and development as the character wanted to be more than just a cheap whore. Also, constantly moving around due to the adventuring life helped a whole lot with being able to "start fresh".

>>
>>54059187
There's lots of examples of prostitutes becoming madams as they get older, and then investing in local real estate to become legitimate.

Streetworkers are not necessarily reflective of all prostitutes, and there's a certain percentage that succeed / further themselves in it. It's just there's also a lot of people who drive themselves super deep into the ground - since its a zero barrier to entry zero oversight and damned near zero protection field.

I've grown to accept that I prefer to play unique bullshit speshul snowflakes so now I'm just working to make playing them as acceptable as I can.

>Things that drive me to drink:

Despite playing once a week for something close to half a year now, no one in my group knows the rules for their characters, or how the rules of the game works.

I feel like this would largely would kind-of fine if we were narratively/role play focused, but because of one fuck-idiot in the group, EVERYTHING is combat and roll playing is the focus.

Time to have some serious chats with the party and the DM.

>>

I mean in general, as it's something that happens with a lot of them. The simplest way to put it is that I make characters that could be the main character (or antagonist even), but in d&d there is (usually) no "main character"- (and even if there was I doubt I'd want to be it)

>>54059839
Probably the worst example is a GOO Warlock where instead of being some mook who made a pact they are the freshly sapient patron posessing an empty body and wandering around to learn about the world with a personality similar to The Outsider from Dishonored.
>>
>>54057091
You wont get any argument that Trickery is objectively worst Domain.

It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't suffer from that vestigial switch of the Cleric's spell casting Stat of Cha into Wis back back when you were supposed to able to play a preacher man(and the Paladin vice versa), and so you're left with a Cleric of Deception who can't actually decieve anyone.
>>
>>54059887
I like the concept, though to allow it in one of my games i'd tone it down from a full-blown patron to some minor spirit/devil/whatever.

>>
>>54056399
Mas is the All mighty Archfey Queen of winter, who has quietly bought up the individual life and death sentences of all the respective crimes the party (started at level 6) had been convicted of as part of their background.

She lives in a permanent state of cold war with Titania, Queen of Summer, and should she act in any way to directly address her problems, Summer would by nature drop on her ass like white on rice and the world would be fucked in the crossfire.
So she picked those people who are powerful, unaligned and expendable enough to try to fix her problems ,but not so much that will draw as much attention as her when they do it.

Yes, I ripped off Dresden Files.
>>
>>54059956
Yeah they were mechanically the same power as any other GOOlock, reasoning being it was essentially trying to look through a hole the size of a grain of sand into the material plane, severely limiting it's ability to project itself. It was a lot of fun to play as the spooky space squid rather than being the one cowering from it. Eventually started on making a small cult before the game fell apart, with the city's approval as they convinced them it wasn't intending to destroy the material plane or anything ridiculous like that. After all, without the material plane things would be incredibly boring.

SKT question

My players are almost at the Eye of the All-Father. I'm planning out the dungeon now. One of the rooms has an adult Remorhaz. They already fought a Remorhaz three weeks ago though, and I'm worried that it'll make the fight less fun. Can anyone suggest a similar creature for the temple? I'm thinking something like maybe a pair of golems or an animated dragon statue.

Do you have issues with facing "unique" or "set piece" monsters multiple times?

Trickery has a great set of domain spells and pretty decent channel divinities. Its divine strike sucks but what can you do? Too many people seem to try to play it like a melee backstabber.

Compare it to Nature, which has a shit channel divinity, mediocre domain spells but great melee and a couple decent features. People love that shit.

Trickery's great! TONS of flexibility. If your party doesn't have a rogue, you fill the void easily, while still having the amazing cleric utility and versatility. And it allows for some great backstory. Thieves who discovered religion (specifically religions that reward thieves). Hucksters, circus performers, smartasses, people with secrets in their past.

I played a Trickery cleric up to level 12 who was tasked by Mask with promoting and legalizing gambling, as it's socially acceptable theft. It was great! And I always felt useful in both combat and RP/puzzle situations.

Trickery has the best Channel Divinity and some really, really good spells.

Nature also has possibly the best features, the worst Spell List and a very situational Channel Divinity.

How about a Behir? They're the same CR and they even have flavor with being a creature created by ancient giants to battle dragons. Harshnag could remark that the Behir must have nested in the temple out of instinctual familiarity with giants.

As far as fighting the same monsters again, it depends on what the campaign is about. If you don't have a lot of time to run your game (for example, you game 2 hours a week rather than 4) then I think repeat monsters need to be part of the campaign theme. In SKT, it makes sense to fight a bunch of giants. That's what the players want. But if they're constantly fighting barbarians or goblins or something, then you probably should be running a different campaign.

Personal reading:

You can only make unarmed attacks with The Old One Two. Pugilist weapons and unarmed attacks are treated (and termed) differently throughout the document. That being said, I can see one of two routes happening:

- The first, it's absolutely meaningless because the level 1 pugilist feature says that you can use a 1d6 damage die in place of your normal unarmed attacks and pugilist weapons. So whether you're using an unarmed attack or a pugilist weapon, you're doing 1d6 (increases with level). All that would change is the damage die.

- The second being a weird interpretation of the RAW (unless I am daft), where it says that you use a 1d6 (increases with level) damage die flat out, because it never states that you add your STR mod (you "roll it in place of the normal damage; not the normal damage dice"). So you could conceivably decide to roll a simple pugilist weapon as a 1d4+STR mod in place of the normal 1d6 dice that you would use, in which case using pugilist weapon when it specifically calls for unarmed attacks makes a difference (at low levels).

The second one seems .. Super wonky to me, to say the least. As long as that interpretation isn't being used, you're just reflavoring the blow - unarmed does bludgeoning, you're doing bludgeoning with brass knuckles, and you're using the same damage dice.
>>
>>54061182
I'd take the first interpretation, but that also would make it so magic knuckles, Magic Weapon, and Elemental Weapon can be used with FOB or The Old One Two.

I could be worrying over nothing, but does that unbalance anything?

I could be

If you're applying anything to it, I would say treat it as it describes - you specifically have to make an unarmed attack. Pugilist weapons are not unarmed attacks; they explicitly differentiate them from the get go. As an example:

>When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a pugilist weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike or grapple as a bonus action.

If you make an attack action with a pugilist weapon or unarmed attack, you may make an unarmed attack or grapple as a bonus action. No mention of you making another pugilist weapon attack.

I would personally allow you to have brass knuckles on both hands and then fluff unarmed attacks as kicks, as long as it was understood that if both of your hands are caught up in grappling, unless you have some specific ability to make unarmed attacks outside of your hands (e.x.: a bite action from lizards), you cannot make unarmed attacks if you're grappling two enemies at the same time. Can be fluffed as "focus is on keeping balance versus attacking".

In short: It works at low levels, but kind of falls apart at higher levels.

Treat it the same as a monk - they can use a monk weapon in their main hand, but their off hand has to be free in order to make use of their unarmed features.
>>
>>54061277

Cave salamanders or axolotls.
>>
>>54061419
>>Treat it the same as a monk - they can use a monk weapon in their main hand, but their off hand has to be free in order to make use of their unarmed features.
No.

You can be holding a shortsword in one hand and the dick of an Orc in the other and you can still use Unarmed features. You can be holding a Quarterstaff in both hands and still make Unarmed attacks.

No matter what you're always capable of making unarmed attacks and Monks can use all their abilities as long as their not holding a non-Monk weapon or wearing armour.
>>
>>54060114
Fighting the same monster twice isn't a bad thing. I'd say that never fighting the same thing twice is worse, since you never get to use what you learn and therefore don't experience organic growth.

Of course they can use a quarter staff in both hands and still make unarmed attacks; there's absolutely nothing stopping them from letting go of that quarter staff and punching a dude. RAW fully supports you doing that; same with letting you do somatic components while holding a 2H weapon. It also specifically mentions that in the rules for monks:

>For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarter-staff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn.

Outside of that: Further reading says you're right. My bad on that - I don't really play weaponless characters too often. So, yeah, >>54061534 - I would let you have them on both hands no problem, with the understanding that you're making non-weapon based attacks when it specifies "unarmed attacks".

>>54061176
Paladins have problems with ranged attacks in general. Vengeance Paladins have a few options for closers, including things that paralyze and track enemies.

Keep in mind that pvp in 5e comes down to burst and Paladins are the kings of burst.

If you can somehow protract the fight over several short rests without involving the other party members or some way to bait his long rest resources with minions, then you might have some advantages.

Depends on his level but there's basically 3 kings of PvP that will be very, very hard to beat in a 1v1 fight.

Monk, Moon Druid and Paladin in that order. If you don't manage to get past his super saves with something like Hold Person or Suggestion in the first turn, you're pretty much fucked.

Monks main reason for beating everyone is they'll likely go first and have up to 4 chances to stun you in one round, especially against people without CON Saves.

I have a quick question about random encounter building. I've been trying to build balanced but tough encounters so I have started using Kobold fight club to help me out. However, when I try to build an encounter it keeps saying that fights I know the party could take in their sleep "deadly" in the adjusted XP section. Should I just ignore it all together or keep in mind to a degree while making encounters. I know action economy can make or break a fight, but When the player can half the health of half of an enemy force and instantly kill another powerful enemy before they get a turn, that makes for a rough time for those enemies actually getting any real work done.

That's what drives me mad with mine. We have:

>Level 6 party
>Moon druid
Feels useless now that 2-4 dire wolf burst is over. Mixes up how spell slots work (2nd level spells use 2nd level spell slots; you do not count it as upcasting spell slot). Never casts spells anymore; just wild shapes and runs in without buffing self / doing anything. Uses polar bear now (glass cannon).

>Valor bard
Never attacks things. Still useful to party because buffs and does some spell attacks. Confusing on why went valor bard though. Also confused spell slots.

> WoTE Monk 1
Has never used stunning strike. Has a pretty damned optimized character but has no idea how to use character. Pushes everything into combat, then immediately realizes (every time) has no idea what his character abilities does. Doesn't track resources. Has started to use SVA WoTE Revisited, now only casts cantrips and spells (shocking grasp, fire bolt, chromatic orb) and hasn't punched anything since.

>WoTE 2
Stacks bonus actions (Racial attack bonus, monk bonus action to dash, monk bonus action to flurry of blows). Convinced DM to let him take levels in a homebrew subclass of monk ('Way of the Tattooed Temple') in place of ASI/Feats. Now wants to choose between their features in level up, so he effectively has two subclasses. Uses the Thematic Cantrips given by WoTE to try to do Avatar level actions.

>Arcane Trickster
TFW bonus action wonkery (uses TFW attacks on spell attacks). Treats Sneak Attack as always giving him advantage. Familiars use of Help action instead seems to apply an effect to a monster that gives it Disadvantage to attack, and Advantage to being hit by anyone. Doesn't understand conditions (got super upset when he couldn't shoot a Prone creature from a distance, versus just walking up, stabbing it, Cunning Action to disengage and walk away).
>>
>>54061836
>>54061926
This is correct.

Initially I thought it was the opposite (that you'd need to deplete both the wild shape's HP and the Druid's HP for it to disintegrate), and a quick google found a few rpgstackexchange threads quoting tweets by Crawford backing this up.

However, the tweets have since been deleted and he's later written in Sage Advice that >>54061926 is correct, you just get turned to ash (about halfway down http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/rules-answers-july-2016).
>>
>>54062616

Trust me, as the dude who went Wolf Totem Barbarian specifically so the dude would be able to Sneak Attack more (and give more bonuses to the two Monks, as well as to the Ranger who has since joined), it's kind of frustrating to say the least.

I can't tell if the Rogue just read the rules poorly., or if he thinks Flanking is in the game. Which its explicitly not, as per DM.

Everyone outside of WoTE1 is solid folk, and we could probably get away with hand waving most of this if it was roleplay / narrative focused, but we are going pretty heavy combat these days and are using a strict grid now.

Strict grid, heavy combat, and no understanding of how your characters work or how the rules work = fucking ridiculous.

Their is an Elf hailing from vaguely Great Britain-ish Isles, so anything that fits there is open to them. GM is fairly permissive, and due to their background, is allowing a "time out of time" element and thus Allosaurus is on the plate as well.

I have no idea why they haven't been using other forms. I am doing a bunch of SRD print outs, /tg/'s character reference sheet print outs (speaking of that: why aren't rogue and ranger in those?), and printed a bunch of animal tokens for her to use (with a bit of a hint-hint-nudge-nudge of I printed all the most combat capable animals. My assumption: They don't understand the non direct combat attacks of things like snake and octopus.

Any ideas to make the character more fun in combat? I was thinking of taking 2 levels in paladin to smite shit. Possibly multiclass into druid or ranger?
>>
>>54062141

Party has to run interference for a group of cursed, undead bards who have to perform an uninterrupted concert in order for their souls to be released to the after life.
>>
>>54063053

Hi Jason Parker.

If you think the Cleric is boring in combat, I suggest picking up Spirit Guardians and going literally super saiya-jin. Then you just waltz up to whatever you want dead and watch it get blown away in your aura. You can also hit it with your +3 strength and Spiritual Weapon, meaning you will deal a lot of damage every round. And if you feel like the party bitch, just remember: You are saving their asses, not the other way around. They gotta suck your dick for the heals, not the other way around.

Why are you using a pen on your character sheet

That aside you could burn your next ASI on Magic Initiate and pick shillelagh to get a 1d8 wis-based club. It's a bit less clear since you have decent str so you could pick up weapon proficiencies, but you're likely not going to max that, and most definitely going to max wis. You're already pretty well off armor-wise.
>>
>>54063100
Uh. What are your stats. That's a huge part of the discussion.

Basically it comes down to this:

Whats your STR/DEX?

If you're a DEX fighter, wear studded leather. End of discussion. If you're a STR fighter, wear heavy armor .. If it gives you more armor than what you would get from wearing light/medium with +DEX.

Anything can be fluffed as "with a hood". You could be wearing a cloak over plate mail.

If you want to stealth, I would recommend just building yourself as a DEX fighter. Assuming you can reallocate your stats so you have that 15 in DEX, that would give you 15 AC (without shield) in Studded Leather, equal to the Chain Shirt max DC. As you get ASI's, that will continue to increase. You would also have a better stealth score, and better initiative.

You can absolutely do a light or medium armor wearing character, and EK can take advantage of things like Shield spell as a reaction to boost their AC (though you'll need War Caster to do so if you've got a shield in hand). If you're super worried about AC, you can sacrifice a bit of damage and grab the Defense style to get a +1 AC, so at level 1 with 15 DEX, Studded Leather, and a Shield, you would have 18AC.

You can absolutely have a STR fighter that wears medium armor, it's just not going to be an optimal build. Using a chain shirt and saving up for a breast plate is fine.

Or grab the Medium Armor Master Feat, and get Scale or Half Plate armor. But presuming you're getting War Caster, that means two feats already. On plus side: Fighter has a surplus of them.

About as fun as when the DM had an orphan kid steal a macguffin through a bag of holding ("the orphans of this city have a special magic that allow them to do so"), then run away without any rolls from PC carrying said bag of holding on them, nor the five PC's around him.

>>54063424
You can basically just use Tunnel Fighter style from UA instead of the Knight subclass. Tunnel Fighter is kind of a massive dick move though.

For improved Dickish-ness, I would say:

UA-Revised Subclasses: Barbarian, Path of the Ancestral Guardian (Target has disadvantage on any attack roll that doesn't target you, *and* creatures other than you have Resistance to the targets attacks). Combine that with Polearm Fighter, Great Weapon Master, and take a level of fighter to get Tunnel Fighter and your DM is going to naturally hate you.

Combine that with Battle Master Fighter for Maneuvers, and grab Sentinel.

You're a bit action economy wonky at the start because you need to enter rage as a bonus action, and entering tunnel fighter stance is a bonus option, but:

-> Disadvantage to attack anyone but you. If they do hit anyone, they only take half damage.
-> You have 10 feet of reach, and if they enter that reach, you can make a free attack at them without costing your reaction.
-> If you don't hit them, you can use Precision Attack Maneuver to hit them.
-> If you do hit them, they cannot come any close as Sentinel sets speed to zero.
-> You can also combine this with things like Pushing Attack, so if they come within 10 feet they are immediately pushed back 15 feet.

You will also do stupid damage on your turn via things like:

Rage + GWM + Polearm weapon + Bonus attack if you don't use the Tunnel Fighter bonus.

But it's a LOT higher level required than just V. Human and knight.

Based on my previous experiences with goblin society:

1.) A contest to catch the biggest prey in the swamp / forest.
2.) A contest where goblins have to fight and kill dogs and wolves that have been captured by the tribe but not tamed. Usually they are only used for executions.
3.) Venture away from the tribe and go to the scariest place (in the perspective of the goblin tribe) within the swamp or forest. This could be an abandoned cabin or hut (possibly under the control of a Hag), a dark cave filled with "really big beasts", Temple ruins, or something else of your own design.

I won't lie, This is mostly based off my experience in the Pathfinder adventure "We Be Goblins". It is a really fun adventure, possibly one of my favorite adventures I played back when I was a part of the Pathfinder Society.
It, and it's sequel adventures, are probably worth looking into for a quest of this nature.

So I'm joining my next game as a Cleric at level 4. I've got a few build ideas in mind I've wanted to try.

The first would be a Hill Dwarf Forge Cleric and I'll take Magic Initiate Druid for Shillelagh. Probably ask the DM if I can just use a Warhammer with Shillelagh with no mechanical difference.

Second is a Lizardfolk Nature Cleric. Pretty self explanatory.

Third is a Tabaxi Light Cleric who's effectively a pure-hearted kid who is generally a pacifist unless it's a monster or a have proven themselves to be completely evil.

My DM normally has at least one name pop up in each encounter. The most memorable was Murple, a Bandit that we interrogated and let go.

Murple's became a recurring Team Rocket style bad guy who always came with some creative trick that was full fourth wall breaking.

Shit like suddenly he had PAM+Tunnel Fighter+Vengeance Paladin, or he hired a Arcana Cleric/Twilight Druid. We normally couldn't fight him and his gang in a straight up fight without getting slaughtered so it was pretty fun.

The Gauntlet has been fun to listen to

I'm enjoying frozen frontier and dicing with death but it's all in a heavily modified 2e, not 5e
>>
>>54064684
It doesn't look like it interacts with Sneak Attack at all since you need Advantage for that. Also, even if you would be able to do SA you'd only deal max damage on the weapon/unarmed strike dice, not the SA dice. Same for Divine Smite.

On crits I think I'm pretty sure you'd max the extra crit dice as well though. For magic items I'm not sure, but how many magic pugilist weapons are there?
>>
>>54064684
The exact wording that matters here

>When you deal damage you do not roll for damage, but use the maxium die result instead

This is incredibly badly worded. ANY damage you deal on a turn this is active now is maximised. ANYTHING. This means Sneak Attack, Smites, Divine Strike, Magic Missile, Fireball and EVERYTING.

The real issue is you need to make a melee weapon attack before you can benefit from that. So being hasted to make one melee weapon attack, then means anything else you do this turn is completely maxed.

To be quite frank, the Pugilist isn't a good homebrew. It's basically a better Monk, Fighter and Barbarian that's near unkillable. This power alone is completely unbalanced.

>>54065017
If you have Advantage, then activate this while having an ally adjacent to the target you could sneak attack. Also Swashbucklers with Advantage in any way or Inquisitive with their Insightful Fighting.
>>
>>54064684

Basically >>54065071. The wording should be

>>
>>54064414
Statistically, they are identical. Only flaws in production skew results, just like any other die. The only "issue" is that any bias is more likely to result in a numerical close grouping, as opposed to a more arbitrary grouping.

More importantly, fuck rolling them. Use them as turn counters for spell durations.
>>
>>54064055
Warhammers are d8 martial weapons with versatile. I wouldn't care if you used a Mace, since it's just a worse quarterstaff mechanically, but i'd take issue with you using a stronger weapon, since it alters your combat prowess is certain situations, or when you are unable to cast.

>>
>>54066179
For most 'gish'-type characters the Fighter is the better option due to being able to use better armor, but the Rogue is probably better suited to complement Bladesinger specifically (since they can't use medium or heavy armor anyways). You'd need 7 levels of EK if you want War Magic, at which point you're not really playing a Wizard anymore and it'll take you a very long time to get third-level spells (level 12 I think?).

Rogue is a bit better flavor-wise, both for Cunning Action and for the fact that it focuses more on evasion than tanking hits, which is I think what the Bladesinger is about (it has to be with such low HP). 3 levels of Rogue gives you a few extra spell slots and 2d6 SA damage, and eventually you could even go 5 levels of Rogue for Uncanny Dodge.

On one hand I'm a fan of magical items, especially utilitarian ones but on the other Pathfinder gives out so much more treasure and shit than 5e and I'm worried about buffing up my PC's to breeze-through levels.

Rogue/bladesinger is pretty great, because you can use bladespells and the familiar to enhance your sneak attacks.

Also, that Azure Wind spell from UA is pretty damn great.

That is, if you compare it to the straight rogue. As a wizard, it's just not worth it, as your spells are always better than melee attacking, even as a bladesinger (although your bladespell stuff is a pretty good at-will option, admittedly).

I couldn't speak specifically in terms of gold amounts, because I never played Pathfinder. But to be honest, 5e has the problem where mundane things are so cheap and magic items are really only acquirable through questing, that players regularly end up with tons of gold lying around no matter how much you give them.
>>

This is completely dependent on the DM and the pace he likes to set. If the process of tracking down the monster is as boring as you wrote it, it's possible the DM is seeing it differently, and you may just need to talk to him about how the hunt maybe dragged on for too much.

I think a little bit of pacing is a little more interesting than immediatly finding what you set out for, but I've seen things spiral out of control pretty quick if the dice are rolled poorly, or players didn't properly prepare.

What kind of session were you looking for? It might be best to let the DM know what you want out of a session.

I'm doing SKT right now. It's pretty good. But I'd avoid chapter 3 as written in the book. Do chapter 2, then immediately after have your party go to Yartar where they meet up with Harshnag (and find out about the Great Dame, which is important later) and go to the Eye of Annam. Chapter 3 is basically the players walking around Faerun kind of aimlessly.

I'd imagine OotA works better at level 1. It makes the drow tracking you around the Underdark and all the shit you can potentially run into a lot more threatening. PotA could work at level 5.

What does your GM normally run?

I can't imagine a D&D game without one of those things.

I'm running a game explicitly set in a world without any real form of civilisation and even that has a ruler for the settlement the players come from as well as loose knit tribal groups with their own leaders and godheads.

Because I missed the session before and I like having the sheets typed out for autism/OCD issues or something. So, I just scribbled enough to play that evening with the plan to fill it out properly later on.

>>54063180

Don't dox me bro! I was thinking of Paladin but I forgot it has a 13 Charisma requirement to multiclass. Maybe take a couple levels of Ranger for the flavour and whatnot?
>>
>>54067234

It depends if you spent an hour literally just rolling dice and losing and gaining the trail over and over again.

Or if those failed rolls and successes led to anything interesting.

For example

>Village the monster came through -people to talk to about it
>Some.bandits it killed to get a foreshadow of how it fights
>Decision branches, say a failure leads to a confusion in whether the tracks lead down a river or through a forest. Both provide different dangers and encounters.

I just imagined there would be more to trekking around a jungle at a low level than just hunting the thing we were looking for. There were no run ins with other beasts or creatures. It just felt like the only things there were us, the track and the beast. I guess I'll talk to the GM about it

This is more what I expected, yeah

What's bad about it anyway? Can't turn the light off?
>>
>>54062339
Assuming you haven't made any technical errors, parties can still handle deadly encounters. Two or three of them, in fact. It just depends on using tactics and abilities well.

It's a game with friends. I was the most stealthy character so I always did the scouting and recon. The other guys were a bit bored with that so I was talking to the DM about it privately. I said I was probably going to multiclass into a fighter after Rogue 5 so I would be dual wielding short swords more often so don't worry about being always sitting off with the bow taking pot shots. I guess he didn't want to chance it.

How I got that sword in particular was we were in a tomb/temple of the god of darkness and all that. The 'mage' we were chasing had a ritual set up to ask the god for magical darkness to block the path to chase her.

I used the same ritual to beg for the god's favor. The mage had a different patron and was just using her in order to cower.

This sword came down from the ceiling and I thought it was a metaphor to cut the darkness away. Didn't know at the time I must always carry it; can't put it down, sell it or whatever else, and it is a 2 foot long glow stick even in a sheath or a bag of holding.

It sort of killed my sneaking ability, so the DM re-flavored a Sun Blade. I personally think a +2 weapon is hilariously powerful since the only other magical weapons we have gotten are +1 Arrows and a dragon slaying Maul.

Corellon's holy symbol is a "quarter moon or starburst". Is there any significance to the difference between the two, or should I just use whichever I like better?
>>
>>54067977
Moon is the "classic" symbol, starburst is the newer, helps keep him separate from moon worshippers and islamist.
>>
>>54068087
So it became the star basically just for people looking in from the outside not to get the wrong idea? The moon will look way cooler on my shield, so I think I'll go with the "classic".
>>
>>54068169
Well FR alone has 4 moon goddesses.
>>
>>54058610
Or maybe you shouldn't

Why are you even on this thread

Wouldnt trickery's channel divinity to grant a stealth bonus be great for your rouge? 7
>>
Sword and board paladin or sword and board hexbladelock?
>>
>>54068552
Depends on your character concept.

Or start Paladin, token investment in str for armour alone, max cha, pick +2 cha race/Variant human and start with warcaster, dip 13 levels of Hex, then main Pala.

Anons? Long story short, how would you convert various party members from Baldur's Gate to 5e? What classes would you make them as part of a theoretical rule-conversion from 2e to 5e?

For example:
* Minsc: I would definitely pin this guy as a Berserker Barbarian with Proficiency in Survival and Animal Handling. It matches with his lore and in-game abilities far better than the more "name accurate" Beastmaster Ranger - Boo is more like a familiar than a proper animal companion.

Jan Jansen: Multiclassed Artificer (Gunsmith) and either Wizard (Illusionist) with Proficiency: Sleight of Hand, or Rogue (Arcane Trickster). Gunsmith gives him an excuse for his Flasher-Master-Bruiser Mate, and the other class depends on whether you consider his illusionist spellcasting or his rogue's talents more important.

Anyone else got opinions on the topic? Or should I start my own thread for this kind of thing?

Oath of Conquest question. If I knock a creature down with Shield Master shove and it gets caught in my Aura of Conquest (Which reduces its speed to 0), does it then remain prone since it has no movement speed with which to put itself back on its feet?

With shieliegh it wouldnt matter mechanically as long as you dont try to use it as a d10 with wisdom

Guy originally bitching about his druid here:

My understanding is that the Giant Elk is a generally superior combat form, and the Giant Constrictor Snake being a superior single target form. Saber Tooth is a shittier giant elk, and Polar Bear is an alright-ish glass cannon.

Allosaurus is solid enough if you can land both hits, but its not *that great*.

I don't play moon druid though, and its just what I've read to try to help her out.

A lot of them are nice, but some of them are a little ignorant of what makes for good design. One of them simply allows Drow to ignore their light sensitivity, and another gives Mountain dwarves heavy armor. Nothing wrong with either of those things happening, I just think it shouldn't be so easy.
>>
>>54066625
0? I'm gonna go with 0. You could take 1 or more levels of rogue if you like.
>>
>>54064684

You can't Sneak Attack if you have disadvantage, even if you have an ally nearby, so no Haymaker sneak attacks.

Critical hits double the damage Dice, so they'd just be maximized.

As to Divine Strike, if the Sage Advice on Great Weapon Fighting is a guide, class abilities like that only affect weapon damage. So you'd get the max on, say, your 1d6 weapon damage but roll the DS damage as normal.

Shillelagh does d8 no matter how you wield it, so it doesn't matter whether the warhammer is versatile d10 or not. The only difference it makes is what happens when the spell drops, which is still admittedly asking for an upgrade. Should be fine though if you ask you're GM.
