Was going to ask this in the "Marvel rips off 40k" thread but it died before I could. How's 2000AD doing these days? I grew up on the late 90s-early 2000s era stuff, and holy shit did I love it. Stopped collecting because life and shit, moved on I guess. Then I saw some of the old artwork in that thread and it reignited my interest. How do you guys feel about it? Is there much love/interest for obscure British sci-fi on the board?

Would love to see more media being made of it. Sinister/Dexter movie? Hell yes. Slaine RPG? Probably already been done. TL:DR, is it worth getting into modern 2000AD?
>>
>>54051703
It's still pretty good. Kind of surprising how well it's kept its quality, to be honest, while Marvel and DC just keep on going with their downward spiral of shit.
>>
Yeah. I mentioned in the thread you're talking about but Deadworld (running in 2000AD) and Lawless (running in the Meg) have been incredibly solid Dredd Universe strips lately. When did you stop reading?
>>
>>54051800
Must have been around 2002-2003. I remember the Books Of Invasions storyline for Slaine, the Empty Suns saga for Durham Red, the Judge Dredd/Alien crossover, the Dredd story where he finally kills that crazy bitch who'se in love with him, that Sinister Dexter story where they go to space with Billie and get chased by a bunch of perverts for not being perverted enough. Sorry for being vague but I'm remembering from 10 years ago. I loved the Nikolai Dante stories, the Rogue Trooper stuff, and I distinctly remember this oneshot called 13, spanned about 15 issues iirc (pic related).

Is there anywhere I can catch up on the stuff I missed, an online cache or something? I hate to freeload but I probably can't buy the comics anywhere so long after release.

Fug forgot pic. Loved the story, remember it fondly for being one of my first faps along with the rape scene from the Books Of Invasion story. Yes I'm a bit fucked in the head.
>>
I recommend Cradlegrave and Ampney Crucis Investigates for some fun inspiration for horror rpgs. The former is even recommended by Ramsey Campbell
>>

Read Comics Online will have a ton. The Megazine now also includes a complete older story as a mini-graphic novel.

To be fair while not as bad as the mid-90s I would say when you got out was the start/middle of a bad period for 2000AD and it doesn't really start picking up for a few years after that.
>>
>>54052382
>The stuff I was reading was in the middle of a bad period
Holy fuck, now I'm definitely going to catch up. How does the new stuff compare to the classics like Judge Child Quest, Nemesis the Warlock, Horned God saga etc?

Dredd's chin is completely inhuman in this picture. It really bothers me.
>>
>>54052987
It's like that in a lot of his artwork bro. It's part of his character parodising the musclebound 80's action hero. Same way that the pauldrons of Space Marines completely obscure all peripheral vision.
>>
>>54052493
I mean Nemesis is like the gold standard of 2000AD but I think the recent Deadworld stuff - Cursed or something - is pretty up there. Slaine has never really been as good again.

There was totally a Slaine RPG OP. It came out during early 00s d20 boom, so its mostly D&D with a few tweaks. Take a look!
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ueoipo3ac38u3ac/MGP8001_Sl%C3%A1ine_the_RPG_Of_Celtic_Heroes.pdf

There were quite a few supplements, but unfortunately I don't have any links handy.

>>54052271
Ian Edginton's work in general is usually worth reading - Leviathan has a lovely setting, Stone Island had some nifty body horror even if the story wasn't terribly strong and Stickleback is very useful for neo-Victorian weirdness in the vein of Malifaux.

>>54053164
"Cursed: The Fall of Deadworld", following on from "Tainted: The Fall of Deadworld" and "Dreams of Deadworld". It's proper good. Lawless is also fantastic especially as a sequel to Insurrection.
>>
>>54051703
Hey creeps Warlord games used to sell metal Judge Dredd minis which you can find on ebay cause Warlord have stop producing them however earlier this year Rebellion and 2000AD and all the affiliates renewed their licenses with other companies so a Dredd tv show is in the works and iirc Warlord games have renewed their contract and are looking to produce minis again.

Comic wise I believe this >>54051738 I recently picked up Dead Planet and it was great along with Dredd compendiums they still hold up

I have a little bit of time, so I thought I'd do the part of the new Deadworld series: Dreams of Deadworld, by Kek-W and Dave Kendall. This is probably the first major reinterpretation of the four Dark Judges since their inception by Brian Bolland thirty-odd years ago, and their look and the stories told here owe much to a nightmare which Kendall had involving them.

The statue in the background of this picture is from the first appearance of Deadworld in the comics, and Death and Anderson's second. In the original it reads "Here marks the spot where the last Lawbreaker was punished."

It really is the topss. I also really like that it retroactively means that every instance of the Fist of Dredd is Fear's worst nightmare coming true.

I've always had a soft spot for Mortis, personally, partly for the fact he looks so peculiar and partly because his rotting attacks can be portrayed so horribly. He makes a cameo appearence in the Fall of Deadworld series in a partially-transformed state and if anything its more disturbing than his "normal" form.
>>
>>54057188
I thought this was OK (the art's great, certainly) but it's the Tales of Deadworld stuff that shows the apocalypse in-progress that really knocks it out of the park.

It does, but I don't have time to do it all tonight and these work quite well as a primer for who the are behind the events of the Fall are and what they're planning to do.

Its really interesting seeing all these strands of Dredd history tie together in Tainted and Cursed but if anyone is on the fence they are totally worth reading on their own. I really want to see what happens next, even though I know its ultimately going to end horribly for everyone.

I don't know if the thread will survive that long, but I should be able to do the two-and-a-bit later Deadworld stories and possibly some others tomorrow if anybody is interested.

If OP's still about, you might also want to look for Brass Sun: The Wheel of Worlds, Numbercruncher, Absalom, Kingmaker, Scarlet Traces, The Low Life, The Simping Detective, Insurrection, Defoe, Aquilla and KIngdom. Plus lots more, those are just a sample of what you might have missed that I could think while I'm half asleep

Fist of dredd as in when dredd punches him in the face? I haven't read the comics in a long time, but did that really have a big effect on his psyche?

yeah, dredds gloves are made out of psy resistant material, so while dredd is waggling his fingers inside his head its like someone grabbing your brain and throwing football with it

I don't know too much about the Dredd comics outside of seeing a bunch of panels and having an anthology. My favorite panels from Dredd are the bits were it goes either full on silly or dark and funny. What's the best Dredd issue to read for that very specific brand of dark humor the series has?
>>
>>54064360
>What's the best Dredd issue to read for that very specific brand of dark humor the series has?
Literally any of them. Personally I'd recommend the Sin City arc, The Day The Law Died, The Judge Child Quest, The Apocalypse War and its prologue story Block Mania. From there on just keep digging, it's tough to find a genuinely bad read when it comes to Dredd.
>>
Despite being Russian, i find it greatly amusing how utterly assblasted are commie remains about the fact their capital got BTFO
>>
>>54063107
It was more that Dredd has punched him in the face A LOT since the first time (seriously, he once managed to do it before the first time thanks to time travel), and given that this is more or less the first time we've had a glimpse of his own psychology we can extrapolate that Dredd's his worst nightmare as someone who can a) harm him and b) is utterly unafraid of him. No idea what >>54063232 is on about. Not that Justice Department doesn't have gloves that can punch ghosts, but they're not standard issue.

>>54062162
Yes, all four of the sequels are very good. Ludicrously over the top, but very, very good.

I've got to do something else right now so I can't provide full commentary, but I do have the first part of Fall of Deadworld lined up. For anyone just coming in and to set the scene, its worth going over the history briefly.

Judge Death first appeared way back in 1980, in 2000AD prog 149. A monstrous undead creature in a twisted parody of a Judge's uniform, Judge Death proclaimed that "The crime is life, the sentence is death!" and sought to punish the lawbreakers of Mega City One. Death's rampage was only stopped by Psi Judge Cassandra Anderson (also in her first appearance) bravely sacrificing herself and trapping the two of them in a miracle plastic tomb. A year later Death and Anderson were freed by a man acting for Death's three brothers - Fear, Fire and Mortis. Together the Four Dark Judges began another systematic purge of Mega City One, and again Anderson stopped them, this time by travelling to the Dark Judge's home dimension and channelling the souls of the planet they had murdered to try to destroy their souls.

In the years since Anderson, Dredd and Death fought again and again and slowly more details of the Dark Judges and their origins emerged. Judge Death: Boyhood of a Superfiend revealed that Death was named Sidney, and was the son of a dentist. He had developed his philosophy as a mere mortal, but thanks to a chance encounter with the witch sisters Phobia and Nausea and falling in love with them was transformed into the creature we know today. The other Four Dark Judges followed soon after and together they began the purges of their world. Boyhood of a Superfiend was in many ways a comedic take on the concept of mass murdering supernatural sociopaths, but the period was revisited later in Anderson: Psi-Division - Half-Life in a much more serious way.

Fall of Deadworld combines elements of Boyhood and Half-Life to show just how the world ended...

Pre-90s 2000AD had a profound effect on Sci-fi that are still felt to this very day ... for the worse.

They're more recent stuff is top notch but only after the U.K. authors became less concerned about being distinct in their "British sci-fi" and allowed their writing to become more influenced by popular media all over the world.

Thanks a bunch!

I've never heard of Fairfax but now I need to dig up all his progs. Pre-dead Deadworld is a great setting.
>>
Having recently binged through the pile of case studied I found,(up to 27), where is a good next step to go looking for more dredd or in setting stuff, with a preference for longer arc stuff like deadworld, necropolis, apocalype war etc?

Also as a side note are there really any repeating villains in dredd beyond the judge death? As most of the ones in there do tend to get resolved fairly finally. Death is the only dark judge which gets too much focus, and while stuff like dead dredd from mutant future came back, most of the time its only one offs.
>>
>>54067601
Dark Future was a thing for a while, it had a line of tie-in fiction and everything.
>>
It's harder to laugh at Judge Fear once you're caught up on Deadworld.

You should fuck off and go read Nemesis m8. And 2000AD absolutely still runs the same zarjaz shit as it did in the 80s, arguably to the detriment sometimes. I'm pretty sure you haven't read what you're criticising, which means you have no fair shot at actually criticising it.
>>
>>54068235
Off the top of my head, there's the Angel Gang, Ula Danser, I think Orlok came back once. But yeah, for the most part he seems to have one-shot villains. Guess it keeps things fresh. I think he fought against the Kleggs more than once too.

Nemesis is THE prime example (among many) of why pre-90s AD2000 sucks so much ass that nobody should ever draw any inspiration from any of it ever again!

>zarjaz

And here is a prime example of why their grey-haired fans are hopelessly out of touch and shouldn't be listened to either.

To better explain this to Americans: pre-90s AD2000 is to science fiction comics as Adam West Batman is to modern superhero movies.

Unless there are some startling developments soon, Fairfax is actually an original creation for Fall of Deadworld. For more Deadworld the place's previous appearances, you'll need the following

>Judge Dredd: Judge Death & especially Judge Dredd: Judge Death Lives
>Judge Dredd: Dead Reckoning
>Judge Death: Young Death - Boyhood of a Superfiend
>Anderson: Psi-Division - Half-Life

NOTE: Half-Life is part of a much larger story arc with Death, Anderson, and an vast cast of Witch Judges, robots, pyromaniacs, psis, two-fisted ranchers, gangsters, natural born killers, mutants and more which goes
Judge Death: My Name is Death
Judge Death: The Wilderness Days
Anderson: Psi-Division - Half-Life
Anderson: Psi-Division - WMD
Anderson: Psi-Division - Lock-In
Anderson: Psi-Division - City of the Dead
Anderson: Psi-Division - Lucid

I can find some bits and bobs when I get a minute, but off the top of my head the longer ones you probably haven't read yet are Mandroid, Total War, Doomsday for Mega City One, and the big, big recent one Day of Chaos. For the wider setting you can't go wrong with The Low Life, The Simping Detective, Shimura/Hondo City Law, Insurrection and Lawless. Like >>54068371 mentions there are very few repeating major villains for Dredd. For what its worth Orlock becomes a fairly frequent Cass Anderson antagonist, and recently got a solo spinoff of his own. And yes, the Klegg's came back in a big way. Breakout star of 2012 Sensitive Klegg recently saved the day with rap!

You can get all of the classic series in Case Files like phonebooks and the "Friday" reboot in its own smaller collection. The American publisher IDW did its own take on Rogue in the last few years, while Rebellion/2000AD proper recently started an excellent new series called Jaegir, which looks at the Nort-Souther war from the perspective of Rogue's enemies, the Norts. I've not personally read any of the IDW series, but I've heard mixed-to-positive reviews.

Incidentally, Prophet is some excellent sci-fi that's well worth seeking out.

>>54070260
One of my favourite parts of that story is Death's reading material in the bunker, personally "Achieve your goals", "Quitters never win" and "Mein Kampf". As another aside, the Vegas City bit from quite late on in Wilderness days is a direct followup to the same place in the Dredd epic The Cursed Earth which some readers may have seen when I did it in May.

SO! I'm not sure if we'll be able to do all of Cursed in this thread, but I can definitely do the first half or so now, break for a bit, write up an op for a second thread, then continue to the end in one go tonight

This is part of it, but aside from Dredd (which only started getting serious merchandising after the Stallone movie), the 2000 AD brand is basically unknown, even to a lot of comic fans because it only exists in comic form. No toys, no stickers, no cartoons.

There's some suggestions throughout this that not only is Deadworld a parallel reality to Dredd's earth, but that the Fall happened in the past relative to the events on earth. You can see that in the way that this world has slightly less developed technology, but perhaps a bit more subtly in Dredd's reality Robert BOOTH was the president who started World War 3 and by his actions caused the Judges to take over in the first place.

I'm going to have to break here and finish this off in a few hours later tonight. I hope people are enjoying this so far.

We are, thanks for the storytime

Oh yes, more of the dark judges is always good, especially when fear fire and mortis getting focus, as its usually just death who shows up.

I've been looking for Leviathan for years now. I read it on /x/ but didn't think to save it and the archive doesn't go back that far

much appreciated, good to catch up on these, haven't read myself since the first four parts of 'Deadworld'
>>
>>54071150
It was quite nice. I once got some old, I think reprints of the very first issues at a BNN, and they were honestly pretty crap, soured my interest in them. When does Judge Dredd actually start to get good?
>>
>>54071233
Cursed Earth, probably. First major story, an adaptation of 'Damnation Alley'. That segues into 'Day the Law Died' which is fantastic.
>>
Shit's about to hit the fan.

Around volume 4 or 5 of the casefiles. Took them a few years to figure out what they were doing with him

I seem to recall 13 having like full bush which was a little unusual at the time
>>
So trying to keep things vaguely tg, any thoughts on the up coming WOIN based 2000ad/Dredd rpg? Anyone play any of the existing games? Better or worse than the Traveller system?

I'm afraid I don't, I've been out of the 2000AD game for about 12 years now and for some reason I chucked out my 300+ progs from the early 2000s when I left home like a retard.

The series is called 13, I think the art was by Brian Bolland iirc. It's worth tracking down, good hunting bro. the titties are mainly at the climax.

Thirteen 2000ad #1289–1299 collected as Th1rt3en (tpb, 96 pages, 2005)

Thirteen appeared in Progs 1289 to 1299 of 2000ad. I don't think it's been reprinted you can try hunting out the original issues on torrent or from the 2000ad online store.
I'd story time it but I fear cartoon boobies might make the mods heads explode

The thing with the very earliest stories is that 2000AD was originally written for boys who were probably somewhere between ten and thirteen in mid-70s Britain. If you're not an underage time traveller from the early Thatcher years its totally fine to not find them that good. Try something from a few years on, as >>54071474 suggests Vol. 4-5 is a good start for early Dredd as you get the highs of the original Judge Death story, Anderson's introduction and the Apocalypse War. If you're happy with at least some degree of wackyness >>54071257's suggestion of The Cursed Earth is good, containing as it does murderous satanic T-rexes, Ronald McDonald lynch mobs and vampire robots. I've done that and the Day The Law Died before too.

Yes, its in The Cursed Earth and the much later story Origins.

>>54071759
>>54072304
>>54072149
I thought I had this, but it turns out the file's bust. I know I have a hard copy somewhere and I may also be able to put a new collection together from the original progs. I'll see what I can do, but it will take time.

>>54073291
Very possible, but Sssidney and the boys have always preferred to take a more personal, one-to-one approach to community policing. Its equally possible that nukes and other god-awful weapons had already been used long before his birth.

>>54074052
Also possible. Its very similar, and you could point to inconsistencies as arising from unreliable narrators, but worth bearing in mind.

It's not like they are completely incapable. City of Courts and Mars Attacks Judge Dredd are at least fun and the Rogue Trooper mini was pretty solid. But shit like Mega-City 0 is just a waste of paper

>>
>>54074144
Glory to Shakaranon.
Absolute beginner here, where should I start reading?
>>
>>54075493
With Dredd?
Pick up the Casefiles, they are great value and give you the whole Dredd story. Start with vol 1 if you don't mind early instalment weirdness and goofy 70s storytelling. Or skip head to vol 4 for the "classic" period of Dredd. Or if you want the start of modern Dredd go for volume 24 featuring the return of Dredd's creator John Wagner in The Pit.
For 2000ad?
Well, if you are feeling brave you can find torrents of the complete run. At over 2000 issue it may seem a little daunting but it's well worth the effort
>>
>>54057716
>I also really like that it retroactively means that every instance of the Fist of Dredd is Fear's worst nightmare coming true.
Didn't fist of dredd already happen to him by that time in dead reckoning? So shouldn't he already know that someone exists who's not only not scared of him, but will punch him in the face with no second thoughts?

Would there be different sisters as well or would they be the same manifestations in all the parallel Deadworlds, manipulating all the Judge Deaths? Wonder how Death would deal with his alternative self from another world?

I like it how, during the Apocalypse War, Dredd blew up an parallel dimension Earth that was an all peaceful hippie community. We need more nice things visiting the world of Dredd, not just evil conquerors. Like in that Anderson story, where they bust some cult and when Anderson scans their leader, she finds him to be like some reincarnated Jesus/Buddha, totally honest and peaceful, and she's really conflicted over judging someone who's so innocent, yet a real danger to their whole way of life.
>>

Do you have a download for the Tales or Dreams? I just finished the Fall of Deadworld with byke and the little girl after getting a 2000AD subscription and I need more.

I really like Brink and the undead hunter guy.
>>
>>54076999
A long-running HBO-style TV series would be the only way to do it right. You need the combination of length and freedom to give us the tits/gore in order to do the series justice. With the watchful eye of Tharg to keep the writer droids in line of course.

If they could actually get Joanna Lumley to voice the Weapons Crest I'd be happy as a flea.

Alas it would never happen in live-action as even with CGI everywhere it would cost silly money.

Time travel's weird, its best not to think too hard about it. Technically Death should also remember meeting himself in a dress just before Fear gets his block knocked off but doesn't seem to. Its best to just assume its one of those alternate past things, in the same way that Strontium Dog can be both a possible future for Judge Dredd's world and Judge Dredd's world can be an alternate past for Strontium Dog's. See also: the tenuous relationship the Pat Mills universes have with each other and anything not written by Pat Mills.

>>54077546
Case Files 2 is still pretty silly, as you'll see from The Cursed Earth, but its definitely got some really entertaining bits, as you'll see from The Cursed Earth!

For those who haven't read it, this is a page from Boyhood of a Superfiend where young Sidney finds his calling. Its also the original design for Deadworld's Judges before they turned, which Kendal remains quite faithful to >>54057929 -

They aren't Dredd, they're a different story/characters from 2000AD. Hitmen in future-detroit, think Jules and Vincent from Pulp Fiction but grimdark sci-fi.

It also has a videogame!
Yes, that's "has", not "had".
Chainsaw Warrior does too.

To anyone who's asking "why did GW make something called 'Chainsaw Warrior'?", look at the amount of chainsaw shit in 40k.
>>
>>54070714
Nemesis the Warlock, just for Torquemada and the fact that it'd be the closest thing we'd get to a good portrayal of 40k's Imperium (if, and only if, The Lord Inquisitor turns out shit).

Failing that, a Strontium Dog series that at least gets up to his relationship with Durham Red (if they adapt "Bitch" I will give my soul to whoever greenlit it, that shit's hype).

If they go full retard and say "no, we only doin' Dredd now", then The Simping Detective. Because I want to see the full craziness that the costuming department can get away with. Also because I like noir.

Fall of Deadworld: no (print collection coming this Autumn)
Judge Death, Judge Death Lives, Necropolis and Dead Reckoning are in Dredd's Case Files, most of the rest are in Judge Anderson: The Psi Files (the Case Files equivalent for Cass), while the Dredd/Death/Batman stories are in a separate Batman VS Dredd collection. Young Death: Boyhood of a Superfiend is collected on its own, and I believe so is the Frazer Irving Wilderness Days story that ties into Half-Life.

BARNEY has lists for what stories have been reprinted where if you need specific details.

I love how they're skinny. Too much sci-fi and fantasy gives everyone heroic physiques. A big musclebound snarling monster is usually less scary than a smiling little weirdo with a gun.
