Vendettas seems nerfed with heavy weapons rules while vultures seem to be fun with 40 shot gatling gun.
Infantry squads having no heavy weapons is kind of meh, though free krak for all seems good.
vet squads seem good for vanguard and getting in close, though the loss of homing beacons hurts like a motherfucker
tarantulas are good though we can't take double assault cannons variants due to no being space marines
The only really outstanding thing I see are 7 point sniper teams.
a two wound sniper team for 7 points at BS3+ is a steal, also might be one the best things used to counter conscript spam this edition. how much is a commissar again?

Like....I don't have any real beef with the primaries scuplts so far, but I like the smattering of armor variants available right now, GW or otherwise, and I kinda feel like they're not gonna start going backwards in armor model with the nu-marines? Yeah. Find out when the 40k night is, then walk in and introduce yourself to people. Most FLGS have a tight knit core of people, but if you seem like a nice enough guy they will probably be interested to see what kind of army you play and be willing to schedule a game.

Things to do:

Be a chill dude. Just go with the intention to hang out at first. Maybe bring your paints. Make a friend and chat.

Talk about more than just 40k, ask people about themselves. Take a genuine interest in other people.

Be honest and humble about your experience level. Ask for tips and advice on painting or army building. Nothing strokes people's egos more than someone asking for advice.

Things to not do:

Talk incessantly about that one time your terminators totally fucking murdered the other guy. Or about how much you hate the new rules/new army whatever. Though a healthy dose of bellyaching is the mark of a GW grognard.

Smell bad, have Cheetos stains on shirt. This isn't MTG, that shit don't fly when you have to hunt for games.

Refuse to look people in the eye or slink off in the corner. If this is hard for you, consider this valuable social practice.

Has anyone played matched games using power level instead of points? How did it go?

I have a lot of Space Marines still in boxes, been collecting them for awhile but didn't want to put many together until 8th came out. SInce I recently got the index and core rulebook, Building an army by power level instead of by points sounds intriguing, and I think I can get the other players at my store in on it. But before I go ham, I just want to know what other people's experiences are.

I have been playing almost exclusively with power level since 8th leaks, played about 15 games. All the people at my shop are still mostly using it.

So long as you don't purposefully try to break the system, Power works wonderfully. It's liberating to build and try out different lists using Power because it is so fast and easy.

With that said Power is not hard to break for some armies, a ball and chain on others, and it makes certain lists that would be viable in Points very non-viable in Power.

Anon. I have 2 tanks and 1 artillery for my R&H. I have 6 Ogryns who operate somewhat differently.

My leadership is random and inherently worse than a Conscripts. My base units are worse than conscripts in many ways.

My marauders allow me to use my big mutant guys to look cool with my pirates.

I've been playing R&H since Eye of Terror. I've won 8 games with them out of 793 games.

The only WAAC you could do was cheaper tanks in R&H 7th - and that was 5 points or so cheaper due to lower BS of 2.

Meta is MEQ city, plus the odd Ork and Nid swarm - very little heavy stuff aside from perhaps one or two tanks, and three Dunecrawlers should easily be able to handle those.
Extra points would probably go towards either buying the 3 front line squads ATSKNF or upgunning the Domini with Eradication Rays, since I was pretty neatly at 2499 Brigade beforehand. There are ways to get it to 2500 exactly, but I preferred this loadout.

Before you needed a 6 to charge from Ambush. Now you basically get a 3d6 inch charge on a 5, guaranteed charge on a 6, and still get a pretty good chance of making the charge on a 4.

Also the Primus allows you to re-roll Ambush and gives the Purestrains the +1 to hit buff. Acolyte Iconwards are basically GSC painboyz giving everything in aura range a 6+ FnP (which you can stack on top of Catalyst) and Might from Beyond can give your Purestrains +1 Strength and Attacks.

In 7th the only thing that made Cult Ambush good was the Subterranean Uprising Formation which you took like 7 or 8 different MSU Acolyte/Metamorph units in and fished for 6's on 2d6.

Now you don't need to worry about MSU, you can run 20 Purestrains and get in more than half the time with a Primus to re-roll and even if you only get a 4 you can make the charge with a command re-roll about half the time (and with a 3 or lower you can STILL potentially get the charge depending on terrain and positioning)

Everyone's going to have their balance changed as codices release and as the first points-tweak drops, so there's not much point in trying to choose based on overall faction power right now. If a hive fleet were to invade a plague world in real space such as let's say the most recently mentioned Iax, who'd win? the hive fleet's shadow in the warp would surely limit the amount of reinforcements Nurgle could get but the whole thing is a bloated mess which would be killing off nids in droves, on the other hand their hypermutability means they'd probably become immune rapidly and their lack of soul makes them incorruptible anyway.
