Cars have been replaced by self driving sliding cubes that can move across any flat surface as long as one of their sides can rest against that surface, in any cardinal direction.

Inside, you never feel the motion. You just relax and let the complex sorting algorithm get you to where you want to be in quickest time.

This looks bizarre from the outside, since traffic is often as many as 3 cubes 'deep', multiple levels of cubes sliding around and making way for each other and traveling up the side of other cubes and on top of other cubes. This means that sometimes a cube is remaining stationary so that another set of cubes can move around using it, but since everyone else is making these minor sacrifices too the overall effect is such that no one person is significantly inconvenienced, the system so efficient about moving people around that everyone still has a shorter travel time than if human drivers attempted to make the selfish choices that would appear to get them around faster.

These cubes even slide up the sides of buildings to deliver people directly to upper floors. Only the wealthy actually own personal cubes, the rest of the time you simply board an unused cube, set a destination, and it returns to public use after you leave it.

Its a style of shop that works in situations where the local populace is desperate and thus can't be trusted to obey the law. It made sense in frontier towns and poor city districts in the past, and in places today where similar economic hardship exists it works again.
